This was a very different kind of cozy mystery.
The cover might suggest a quaint polite community but that is not the case in this book. The main characters are Juanita and her son Danny who are Native Americans from the local Kewa people, and Irene who owns a high end second hand designer clothing store for very rich tourists and locals. Irene’s mother Adele provides the light humour as well as some vital clues to the killer. And yes Irene and Adele do take off to go into the desert on their own, ill-equipped for a dangerous mission.
Much of the investigation has subplots linked to violent crime gangs, serious drug trafficking together with the trade in stolen relics and how it impacts the cultural heritage of the Kewa people.
There is a clear indication of social injustice and the contrast between the ladies who pay thousands of dollars for an outfit and the poor indigenous tribal community.
It was fairly clear early on who committed the murder and why, and there are scenes of physical violence and drug taking in this book, but these do play an integral part of the story and help to build empathy for Jaunita and Danny.
This is a very interesting story set in a unque location.

Thank you to NetGalley and Alibi for the digital proof copy.

Traditions of the Kewa people and the pueblo are woven into this mystery.

Former Manhattan ADA Irene Seligman has returned to Santa Fe NM to look after her high maintenance mother, Adelle. As the owner of Irene's Closet, a high end clothing consignment store, it is Adelle's friends who are Irene's best source for stock and as customers.

Juanita Calabaza's beautiful native jewellry is admired by Irene. When Juanita finds herself needing outside the law legal help Irene is conflicted.

More of a personal interest story than a cozy mystery but very enjoyable to read.

I love love love this book! Set in a small town in Santa Fe, New Mexico rich in culture and tradition, we see a different side of Santa Fe, a darker side.

Fast-paced and thrilling, Accessories to Die For will keep you turning the pages long after the lights have gone out.

Paula Paul shows how great the love of a mother is and how much a mother is willing to go great depths for her child. Irene reminds me of Nancy Drew because of her bravery and independence. Adelle, Irene's mother, makes the story more interesting because of her personality. I would recommend this book to those who are fans of Nancy Drew.

A Native
American murder mystery with intense vibes, this story started with a deep intense flavor with a dash of tribal mysticism, the storyline is an excellent one and the characters are great. To tell you the truth I thought this would have been another run of the mill murder mystery but this one is unique and quite engaging. Former prosecutor turn boutique entrepreneur Irene and her mom Adelle were on the hunt to find out the truth about what was happening in their neighborhood and trying to help Irene’s friend Juanita. The gangs and drugs were prevalent in the town and they can see the destruction it leaves in their wake, couple with murder and missing people it leaves room for a lot of shenanigans. A truly mesmerizing and interesting book, I wasn’t disappointed at all, this is a must read, couldn’t put it down until I reached the end.
