I really enjoyed this newest book in Virtue Falls. Kateri and the rest of the sheriff's office is kept quite busy throughout the book. I didn't feel that there was a lot of focus upon what was supposed to be the main Hero and heroine, Merida and Benedict though. This felt more like a Kateri Kwinault book. I am not complaining about that either! This story has a few predictable story lines and a few surprises too. It was enjoyable to see the characters figure things out. I love Rainbow, the quilters, Stag, and all of Virtue Falls. This is one series I will always be looking out for!
Merida Falcon lived the live of a trophy wife to a rich, older, abusive, controlling man. When he dies she changes her appearance and disappears. She returns to Virtual Falls, her childhood friend Kateri Kwinault is the sheriff there. Merida looks nothing like she did when she knew Katerina. She was badly burned and left mute from an explosion and the price to pay for restoring her appearance was marriage to her now deceased husband. Merida has one goal, revenge. Revenge on the person she blames for her accident and resulting in her having to live with her abusive husband. There is danger around every corner for Merida, someone, possibly more than one person is after her. There is also a local criminal on the loose and bodies start turning up. Are we dealing with two devious criminals?
There are so many twists in this book I felt like a pretzel trying to follow them. You can't tell the good guys from the bad. Merida is a very complex character. I really enjoyed the plot and could hardly put the book down. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
This was a very good book. So much crime and murder. Towards the end you no sooner solved one crime and another crime came to a boiling point. I really enjoyed this book. Lots of twists and turns with mysterious characters.
****I voluntarily reviewed and gave my honest opinion of this Advanced Readers Copy of this
book from Net Galley****
There were too many side stories going on that I couldn't follow the story. It would jump from character to character, story to story and by the time you got back to the other character I was lost.
Merida comes to Virtue Falls to seek her old friend Kateri and to plot her revenge for all the things done to her. ARC from NetGalley. Review on GoodReads.
I have been a fan of Christina Dodd’s work for years, and I knew this book would be another fantastic tale. I was not mistaken. I was sucked into the story from the first paragraphs, and I couldn’t put it down. Merida Falcon is a woman with secrets. She’s a strong and intelligent woman; a prize for any man. After arriving in the small town of Virtue Falls, she knows she’s found her place. But people are dying at an alarming rate, just after she arrives. And then the threats start as Merida’s new life spins violently out of control. I was on the edge of my seat through the entire book, and it never did let me go. I loved it, and would highly recommend it to all of my friends and family.
I found this book confusing and I didn't think the title suited. The book was about Merida who couldn't talk but I didn't find her story interesting I really liked Kateri and her story that's the part I was most interested in and couldn't wait to see what happened and once I got into it I couldn't put it down but it did take a while.
A big shout out to NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review.
I will be honest and admit that I have not read all the Virture Falls books and this is #4.
That being said-I was a little lost a few times-it doesn't totally read as a stand alone. The title makes you believe that this story will be solely about Merida but I think it is more about Kateri. This was a bit confusing as it changes viewpoints quite often.
The story itself is a thrill ride, twists, turns, unexpected occurrences with bad guys that JUST WON"T DIE!!! Overall a great read and well worth the confusion of skipping a couple of books in the middle. I think that most people will enjoy the book!! I certainly did.
Dodd reminds me a lot of Nora Roberts in that Roberts is very well known for her Romance genre but she also writes in the Mystery genre so when you’re looking up her books you have to check both areas because the mystery books often get labeled under Romance or vice versa. Dodd’s Virtue Falls series is a prime example of this dichotomy because there is no doubt where this falls. This is NOT a Romance series, it is firmly entrenched in the Mystery genre with a side storyline of Romance that is not the focus so beware of that if you are a hardcore romance fan.
This is the FOURTH book in the series and it is IMPERATIVE you read the first 3 or you will be lost, you won’t have that same sense of WOW when you discover certain plot points and if you ever go back to read the early ones after this some of the shock won’t be there because you’ll already know where things are headed.
This novel switches viewpoints between 2 characters so it can take a bit to adjust to but since that’s a common plot tactic in the mystery genre it didn’t bother me.
Dodd has created a great revenge story full of complex characters that does justice to this series. I loved the twists, the suspense and the mind games she played with her characters. It reminded me a bit of that show Revenge in that you have this character return to town while hiding her identity in order to play havoc on those who hurt her years prior.
My only complaint with the book was how Dodd handled the use of sign language in the book because it just seemed way too prevalent to be believable given the context of who the character was interacting with and within these settings.
RELEASE DATE: 09/05/2017
RATING: Definite 5
GENRE: Paranormal Thriller (if Frog Gods are paranormal)
SERIES: Virtue Falls #4
REVIEW: Merida is a beautiful young woman married to one of the richest men in the world. Although many would be envious of her status, the truth is that her husband is a cruel and selfish man who cares for little other than himself. When he dies, Merida pulls up stakes and flees to Virtue Falls seeking revenge against those who caused a long ago accident that left her without a voice and also with few choices of her own.
Upon arriving in Virtue Falls, Merida falls back into close friendship with Sheriff Kateri Kwinault. Although they have not seen each other for many years, their friendship once again blossoms. This is excellent timing, since Kateri’s best friend in Virtue Falls, Rainbow, is in the hospital in a coma most think she won’t emerge from.
Merida is chasing (and being chased) by folks from her past who want to ensure her silence-permanently. Kateri is chasing down a meth dealer, a serial killer, and as if that’s not enough, must face the Frog God to bring Rainbow back from the edge of death. Merida and Kateri are also being pursued by hot men who may or may not have the best of intentions.
I fell in love with the Virtue Falls series when the first book, “Virtue Falls”, was published. Dodd’s stories are romantic, easy to read, and suspenseful. If you haven’t given her books a chance, you should dip a toe into the water and see what you think. I’ll bet you won’t be disappointed.
*Tremendous thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC.

I love all of Christina Dodd's books. She puts a lot of emotion in her writing and I always love her characters.
Interesting choice to put this Title in with ROMANCE BOOKS. As it's not a romance book, it's a mystery and it features two heroines and each of their stories are told in alternating points of view with little connection.
Christina Dodd was one of the very first authors I've ever read. Years ago she was one of my favorite authors and any of her historicals I'd snatch up immediately and then several of her contemporary romances when she switched genres. But honestly, for me, the further away she went with her story telling, the less and less I bought until I gave up reading anything new of hers at all.
So when I came across The Woman Who Couldn't Scream I decided to give it a try because it seemed intriguing, and it was. However, I strongly feel that it would be better served in the mystery genre category exclusively. I felt let down because I was really expecting a romance book and I didn't get that. If you love a great mystery with loads of intrigue with a tiny side bar of romance then you will love this book.
It's the 4th book in the series and although it's been suggested that it reads as a stand-alone novel I also feel that you'd be better served reading the other books in the series first as it will fill in a few gaps, and add to the strength of this story but isn't all together necessary.
I appreciate the opportunity to read the book and Thank Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
This is an interesting and suspenseful read. Its well written and the story moves at a good pace.
This book is a very good psychological thriller. It has a good plot with many twists and turns to keep you guessing. I want to read the other books in this series.
I haven't read any of Christina Dodd's book in forever, the last one I read was years ago. I have always loved her so I decided to read this one.
It was good, really good, when I wasn't reading I found myself thinking about it and then sneaking to turn the page when I had to do something else.
While this book was interesting it also irritated the hell out of me. If it wasn't as good as it was I would have stopped reading it after the fourth chapter. I hated, hated the alternating POV from the characters. It harshly yanks me out of the story and messes up the pacing.
Katrina story was goof and I was curious about her but the same can be said about Merida. I don't know if this is the regular theme with the "Virtue Fall " series but I feel this would have been better served if the story had focused on one of the characters as opposed to having both Katrina and Merida have their story running concurrently. Once, we were about to discover something happening to Merida and the next pages it's talking about Katrina, it was beyond frustrating.
Also, it seemed like everyone knew sign language, almost everyone could understand Merida when she signed, I mean everyone she came across with. Those that did not understand her at the first meeting seemed to understand her at the second meeting, it seemed implausible for everyone to know/grasp sign language that quickly to communicate coherently with her.
Katrina and her whole superstitious angle didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, it was written tastefully in my opinion. I do wonder if the story would have been better without it.
This book had more to do with mystery than romance, there was almost none to be honest. The mystery was mysterious, I thought I had figured who was behind everything and then my guess turned out to be wrong, so yea, I liked that it kept me guessing. The name of the book threw me off a little bit too, from the name I had expected something else along the lines of the motive behind it all but I was wrong in that regard.
That being said, I really enjoyed this and I can't wait to read more of Dodd's books, I have definitely missed her brand of story telling.
This is the 4th book set in Virtue Falls by this Author ............and she continues to enthrall with her combination of Romance , Psychological thriller and the 'Frog God' .
Merida Falcon is in hiding ... seen by some as the 'Most Beautiful Woman in the World' she tries to alter her looks and style and adopts a new name , she hopes that no one will recognise her , she needs a place to start planning her revenge ... now her husband is dead - and so returns to Virtue Falls .
Newly elected Sheriff Kateri Kwinault is still recovering from being shot in Rainbow's cafe ......now Rainbow is in a coma - not expected to recover .
Kateri recognises her old schoolmate , but agrees for the short term to keep her real identity secret .
Within days it seems that most of the people from Merida's recent past have turned up in Virtue Falls , even her lover from before her 'accident' which left her damaged and mute .
Who can she trust ??
Who can she turn to ??
Why are they there ??
Who is trying to kill her ??
Why is someone trying to kill her ??
Incidents occur and bodies start to mount up !
Kateri is under pressure to find the 'killer' or is it killers ? and is it just Merida in danger ?..... all the while trying to keep her feelings for Stag in check , with little success .
Rainbow's condition is is worsening and Kateri must decide if she wants to risk another encounter
with the 'Frog God' !
This is an excellent romantic thriller set in Virtue Falls in which the Author manages to keep the reader engaged with the twist and turns of the multiple plotlines .
Excellent book! All Dodd's characters are always so interesting. I liked the advertised romance for Merida in this book but it was really about Kateri. The series itself seems to be mostly about her with snapshots of other lives.
I was totally intrigued with the book from the blurb. Good solid writing by one of the best romance writers out there. I couldn't put the book down. Loved it@!
"Noooooo!" I screamed. "I finished it, I finished it!" In one day. I couldn't put down The Woman Who Couldn't Scream(Virtue Falls #4). Now it starts over again. The LONG WAIT until the next Virtue Falls book is written. I discovered Virtue Falls quite by accident. I had never read Christina Dodd before, but the third book “Because I am Watching” was sitting pretty as you please in the mystery section of the library. I devoured it. Went back and found the other two. Holy schmoles what a terrific series! Wonderful plots, fabulous characters, hot sex-wait did I really say that -and a setting I want to move to. I think after I move to Louise Penny's Three Pines I will purchase a vacation home in Virtue Falls, WA.
So this fourth book does not lose steam, not in the slightest. We have two major story lines, the mute, most beautiful woman in the world (MBWiW) moving to Virtue Falls to start a long anticipated plan to punish the man who caused her painful journey into being the MBWiW. We also have the continuing story of Sheriff Kateri Kwinault. Who doesn’t love Kateri? Who doesn’t want Stag?
Poor Kateri, she seems to have a serial killer and maybe a contract killer or two wandering around the town. Evidently the MBWiW late husband believes in suttee. There is also an escaped meth dealer who is out for some serious payback.
Kateri must make a choice about saving a dear comatose friend’s life by giving more of herself to the frog god, or to reject the powers offered by the frog god.
The MBWiW has moved into a B&B having disguised herself as best she can-going for a punk street look. Unfortunately the disguise doesn’t work well and she is surrounded by people who think they know her and in some cases, want her. This is really conveniently bad luck for her.
I wanted more; I wanted more of both Kateri and the MBWiW. Their stories intertwined, they were childhood best friends for awhile.
Of course I always have a quibble section; in this book it’s hard to find many. I missed Rainbow up and at ‘em, I want more Margaret. I hate the term “bang’. Go ahead, use the big kahuna F word, it can be very sexy in the right place. It would have worked fine here; after all, the book is explicit in other scenes, maybe not enough of those scenes? Hey-I’m new to this mystery, romance and hot sex genre.
I mentioned finding “Because I'm Watching” in the mystery section as a happy fluke, because it seems as if the Virtue Falls series is being marketed as romance. I rarely read books from romance writers (Dodd has helped change this) because evidently I have a dark soul. I think The Woman Who couldn't Scream is a terrific mystery with some great romance. Not a romance with some mystery served on the side.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
