This is a great blend of romance, suspense and action sprinkled with a strong dose of supernatural. The twists and turns of the plot will keep readers guessing even as they enjoy engaging with all the familiar characters from the series.
Jane is a dreamer. Her vivid dreams of Cira, have lead to advancing plot lines in various stories with the author the most recent being the search for Cira's treasure at the banks of a beautiful loch hidden in remote Scotland. Now Jane's dreams have changed. A new face has joined the old and familiar. An increasingly desperate young woman is trying to reach out to Jane begging for a rescue from her current wretched circumstances. As Jane feverishly tries to capture her dreams on canvas, she feels Lisa her dream woman slipping away. Who is this young woman and why is Jane dreaming of her? Will she get to her in time to rescue her?
As Jane wings back to Scotland to continue in the search for Cira's treasures she calls in the heavy artillery in the form of Joe and Eve to help her. As it happens her nemesis Seth Caleb is the one who's going to help her put together the clues and mount a rescue. As they work together, Jane and readers finally learn about Seth's shadowy past and gain new insights into what drives Seth Caleb and how he became who is today.
With Lisa successfully rescued the focus turns back to the treasure. A motley crew of people of different ages from different walks of life and other books in the series all gather at the campfire to supplement MacDuff's lighting technology to pierce the fog and find a way to retrieve the treasure. In order to truly navigate this book you need to have read a lot of books in the Eve Duncan Jane McGuire series.
I really enjoy these books with their interesting mix of down to earth dialog and woo woo supernatural tones and can't to see what the author has in store for some of these characters.
Iris Johansen’s latest book MIND GAME features Jane MacGuire as the main character. Jane is off to Scotland to help MacDuff with his unceasing quest for Cira’s gold, but her attentions are diverted by a relationship with Seth Caleb, the talented and mysterious young man who can kill people by manipulating their blood flow. Lisa, Seth’s sister is in danger and has psychically contacted Jane for help. Jane approaches Seth and the adventure between the two of them heats up dramatically. Seth needs to save his sister and Jane from a nefarious plot by foster parents, and at the same time try to actually not kill someone in the process. Eve and Joe end up showing up in Scotland too, with a surprising announcement of their own. Fans of Iris Johansen’s Eve Duncan series will not be disappointed with this latest offering and all of the details revealed about the elusive Seth Caleb as well as the normally retiring and artistic Jane.
I loved this book. I love Jane and Caleb. I hope they get their own series.
Caleb is very interesting and he has something that is very appealing. I love him and love the relationship between him and Jane.
I love Michael and the fact that he’s in this one. He’s a different baby, sort of magical. And Jane loved him.
I love that Eve, Joe, Cara and Jock are a part of this book. I’m so intrigued by the friendship between Jock and Cara. I want to see if something develops from that or what.
We also get to meet a new character who contacts Jane through dreams. We also get to see more of Cira and what she went through, the pain of loading a child and the grief.
I can’t wait to read the next book. Love Eve Duncan and that relationship between her and Jane.
I'm usually a fan of Iris Johansen's books and usually enjoy the Eve Duncan series. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed in this one. Maybe it's just me, but there seemed to be an overabundance of dialogue - though much of it was in Jane's mind. To me, this book just didn't have the same vibrancy of other Eve Duncan stories. It was 'just ok'.
What more can I say other than another great story from Iris Johansen.
While a little slow at times, it's a well rounded story with a little intrigue, romance, and a nice progression fo characters we've come to love and think of as family.
If you need everything explained to you because you have no critical thinking skills and don’t mind crappy writing, this is the book for you! Johansen writes a lot of stuff in dialogue that should be exposition. What I mean by this is, when two people are having a discussion in which they know the background but the reader doesn’t yet, they don’t have to explain things to each other, but the author has to let the reader know, ideally in a far more adept fashion. This is some of the worst dialogue I’ve read in a long time. She also does that thing where she has only two people in the conversation, and yet they feel the need to address each other by their first names all the time, which never happens in real life. “Good night, Jane.” “Good night, Eve.”
If you like simplistic writing, you may be able to get through this.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book and discover an author I never need to squander my time on.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of Mind Game by Iris Johansen that I read and reviewed.
This was and excellent addition to the Eve Duncan series even though this book focuses around Jane MacGuire, Eve and Joe's adopted daughter. In the book Jane is having dreams about a girl who is in trouble who she calls Lisa and who she learns is the sister of Seth Caleb who she has had a complicated relationship with in the past and who her family feel they owe for saving Eve and her young son.
As Caleb and Jane race to save Lisa they find out there is more behind her abduction then meets the eye and Jane starts to learn more about Caleb and their relationship gets a lot more complicated. Also, Eve and Joe decide to take their relationship to a whole to level to the surprise and joy of their family and friends.
Mind Game has another chapter in the life of Eve Duncan and her family and friends. It is full of suspense and also romance and also more updates on a family that fans if Johansen feels like they are a part of. I
Mind Game gets five out of five stars.
Thrilling paranormal suspense…
This is the twenty-second book in the Eve Duncan series.
Incredibly vivid dreams have plagued the artist Jane MacGuire for years but they’ve always been about Cira, a woman who lived in the distant past, the one who hid a treasure the Scottish laird John MacDuff that Jane assists seeks relentlessly. Now Jane has dreams of a young woman who seems awfully familiar in appearance yet she can’t place, a woman she feels is alive, in serious danger and reaching out to her for help. Drawing detailed sketches after each of the dreams Jane uses her intellect and connections to try and locate the woman. But it’s when the intense Seth Caleb returns to her life that some things are made clear: the mysterious woman’s identity is revealed and the danger she is in is made credible. With her inner senses telling Jane that she’s somehow been chosen to help the young woman she has this psychic connection with Jane joins up with Caleb subjecting herself to the steamy awkwardness that always exists between them. Can they find her in time? Can Jane keep balanced Seth’s darkness?
This was great suspense with a decidedly paranormal touch. While part of the Eve Duncan series this story is predominantly Jane centric. The reading is enhanced if you’ve kept up with the series though enough information was disseminated to somewhat comprehend the referenced past happenings. The dynamics between Jane and Seth were fascinating. They were palpably drawn to each other, their acute witty often sarcastic dialogue was riddled with sexual tension but she is lightness while he is darkness. Seth has been influenced by Jane in the past. Can she keep him grounded with what is now at stake?
This series has captivating storylines and the most intriguing complex characters, some with prodigy level talents; others with paranormal abilities. They are bound to each other as a family of choice and they’ll do anything to protect those they call family, they’ll be there for each other when a special celebration happens. Threads previously woven came together beautifully in this book in a most spectacularly satisfying conclusion.

4.5 stars
This may have been listed as an Eve Duncan book, but she only plays a sideline character in it. It is a Jane MacGuire book and a well done one at that. Jane is back in Scotland looking for Ciara’s treasure when Caleb enters her life once again. They begin searching for his half-sister, Lisa, and the people who have kidnapped her. The plots (there are several story lines running through this novel) are intricate and remarkably well woven. The characters are not your ordinary neighbors. All in all it was excellent reading and will capture the reader from the onset. Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC for an honest review.
I haven't kept up with the series in fact its a hit or miss when it comes to the series. The author brings every up to date quickly for new reads. I found this story to be a little flat the characters were not dynamic for the concept of the story. I found Jane to be very flat and whiny character. Jane's character is the point character but she isn't able to hold the readers interest with her psychic or supernatural powers.
The concept is fascinating but the execution is boring and lacks creativity.
Beautiful Cover that will stand out on the book shelves.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Martin Press for the advance copy.
I received an ARC of this book. I’ve read books by this author in the past and enjoyed her stories. With this book it took me some time to get into it but I think part of the problem is I didn’t know some of the back story. Iris always makes you feel you are right there in the story with the characters and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
First off I’d like to thank the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Jane MacGuire is haunted in her dream by girl who she doesn’t know but seems familiar to her. While visiting Eve, Joe, and Michael, Jane tells Eve about these dreams. Of course this hasn’t happened since she dreamt of Cira, which has led her to live in Scotland for the past several years, to help find her lost treasure. Eve encourages Jane to draw out her dreams in hopes that it will shed some light into what this person is asking of Jane. But Jane does know who this woman is, she’s the sister of Seth Caleb, a man who can turn her insides to mush and irritate her at the same time. Seth needs Janes help to find his sister before it’s too late.
Enthralling, entertaining, completely satisfying, and a small amount of paranormal. Just like all the other books before, this will take you on a thrill ride that you didn’t expect. With its fast pace, story line that will keep you reading to the wee hours of the morning, to the connections of the characters, and the descriptions that are brought to live that make you feel like you’re actually in Scotland, this is a great book to read. However, if your needing your Eve fix, you won’t get much of her in this installment, this book is centered around her daughter and Seth.
This 22nd book in the Eve Duncan series seemed to bring a number of long-running plot threads to a conclusion. It begins with Jane having dreams about a young woman in danger. She goes to Joe to help her find out who the girl is. Then Seth Caleb comes back into Jane's life and throws it into confusion again. She and Seth have a very difficult relationship. Seth is one person that Jane really doesn't understand but who fascinates her too.
Things are also moving along in Scotland in the hunt for Cira's lost treasure. Additional visions from Cira help Jane know where to hunt. MacDuff is still looking for a technological solution to pierce the fog that covers the lake where the treasure is hidden.
Eve also makes a decision that also will bring lots of changes and leads to a reunion with many of the characters from earlier novels in this series. Fans of the series won't want to miss this latest (but not final) episode.
The story has a lot of suspense. Between rescuing Lisa, figuring out who wanted to kidnap her, and why Jane is also kidnapped, the action is frequent and harrowing. I liked that Jane and Seth are getting to know each other better. Seth's backstory explains a lot about his actions and his views.
I have been reading this series from the earliest days and have only missed a few books. The books are compelling suspense novels and filled with characters who have various psychic gifts. I find the dialog to be different from many other stories. Sometimes the conversations feel like shorthand or that the characters are talking in code.
Fans of the series won't want to miss this one.
Jane MacGuire has begun to be plagued by dreams of a girl that she feels that she should know but just can’t quite grasp who this is that has been visiting her night after night. Jane does know one thing however and that is she feels this girl is in some kind of trouble and needs Jane’s help. Drawing out the scenes of what she’s seen in her dreams of the girl and her surroundings Jane is determined to find out just who the girl is and what she needs.
As Jane starts out on her quest to find the mysterious young woman that has somehow connected with her she finds herself meeting up with Seth Caleb yet again. This time Seth is the one in trouble and needing Jane’s help and he knows just who Jane’s mystery woman is. The pair find themselves working together to figure it all out before it’s too late.
Mind Game by Iris Johansen is the twenty second book in the Eve Duncan series. The series in a highly intense thrill ride with each installment from start to finish with the added element of supernatural/paranormal touch to each book with characters having some sort of ability. Eve herself was a forensic sculptor that could actually communicate with the dead. While Eve Duncan is involved a bit in this installment of the series she has become more of a background character and Jane has jumped to the forefront of the story with her abilities.
I jumped into this series rather late myself several books ago but have gotten to know the characters and how the stories work since I’ve joined and this one is no exception. There’s always plenty of fast paced action with plenty of danger while you may have some romance on the side along with that touch of supernatural which ends up being a rather interesting tale each time from start to finish. I kind of missed having Eve at the forefront this time but was satisfied with her involvement and overall thought this was a solid addition to the series.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
"It was people who cared and went the extra mile for me."
This line in the book pretty much sums up what the whole story is about, people who care and are willing to go the extra mile for each other. This book was as all the other fast paced jam packed full of action.
I loved reading it and look forward to the next book in the series.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press via Netgalley for the copy. You have all the good books/writers!!!
This is an interesting book but a rather slow read. I honestly left it at times to pursue other books only to pick it up and read some more chapters. It contains a considerable amount of reference to previous novels with the same characters that I was not familiar with as of yet. At times, the book was very slow paced then amp up only to slow back down again.
There is a paranormal theme of thought transference, blood slowing/speeding, and mind manipulation for empathy or for harm. It takes place mainly in Scotland on a fog shrouded lake where characters from a previous novel are trying to uncover a hidden cache of treasure. Amid this setting, a paranormal thought/blood manipulator, Caleb, is desperately trying to free his sister from harm and learn what evil hides behind her abduction. He needs the help of Jane who is able to communicate telepathically with Lisa, Caleb’s sister. There is a strong attraction between Jane and Caleb that they both forcefully resist that cannot and will not be denied.
Mind Games is a well constructed, fast paced story which kept me involved throughout. Although I am not a fan of stories based on telepathic communication, I did find myself absorbed in the story and characters as they evolved.
Iris Johansen has mystified her readers with over 20 books and now she’s provided another one that is going to truly satisfy her longtime fans with answers to some of those questions that have been plaguing us, keeping us up at night, causing us to cook so distracted we end up using salt instead of sugar nearly killing people with apple pie gone wrong. Don’t worry she’s still able to keep those open ended questions going in that delightful way to drive you crazy until her next book comes out.
Mind Game allows us to spend time in Scotland with Jane Macguire, Eve & Joe’s daughter in case you didn’t remember. Her character and personality are most on display in her interactions with the characters around her. A young woman in desperate need of help and Seth Caleb who just screws with her; he gets called by other characters as either Seth or Caleb which can get confusing so beware. Johansen is a pro at fleshing out her characters to feel like real people with believable emotions, motivations, actions to the point you actually care what happens to them.
My only really big, annoying negative was she seemed to be watching too many X-Men movies because she was dishing out ‘special abilities’ like candy to more characters than was necessary. Sometimes it got a little out of hand to the point you were almost taken out of the story because the supernatural elements seemed a bit much for the genre this book is supposed to be in.
Due to her adept writing she’s even managed to turn Scotland into its own type of character. Be prepared to have your credit card waiting because by the time you get done reading this and taking a visual journey through Scotland thanks to her vivacious writing you’ll be wanting to travel there in person.
Occasionally a bit of dialogue or plot runs a bit long for my taste but overall she keeps the pace fast and desirable so you want to keep reading. If you’ve read enough of her books you know she’s got a good hand with danger, mystery, action and family/friendship roles and this novel continues with those themes.
If you’re a newcomer who is curious about her latest and don’t feel like reading 20+ books to get here it’s written decent enough that you can enjoy her style so hopefully you’ll end up going back to the starting point so her characters and their journey will have more meaning for you.
Eve Duncan's Jane didn't start with an easy life but with Eve and Joe Quinn she has family, love, friendship, support, and understanding, Her life as an adult is forever fascinating particularly when you bring in Caleb and that magnetic attraction that is always lurking in their relationship. June is once again involved with her Scottish friends in a story that brings all Johnansen's exciting story elements and characters to life. Her characters are family, her reader's family. Mrs. Johansen once again tops herself with an absolute winner. A MUST READ.
