This is a Book of the Month for July, so I expected to enjoy it more. The appeal, it's In Cold Blood meets Making a Murderer, is that it's very on trend. It's not dreadfully written. But it's very old (written in 2000) and to my mind not good enough for this revival. It's very sympathetic to this 5x murderer, and despite a mocking approach to the prison visitors Carrère doesn't really tackle the horror and the 18 year long con with anything but mild interest. I left unclear on the motivations - was shyness, depression or feeling trapped enough alone to motivate this man to steal millions from his friends and family? I can't believe that.
