OMG, so funny! Terrific parenting advice in case a zombie apocalypse breaks out! I'm not familiar with the author's website (Exploding Unicorns?)but will seriously check it out sometime! Sounds like a real hoot! Zombie fans and parents of small children alike (and anyone else in need of a good laugh!), will enjoy this book. Too, too hilarious!

This book was super funny. I had no idea who this guy even was, but oh my god. I figured what this was about and it held up to the title.

I wasn’t sold either way on this book; it was just okay. I thought the premise was amusing, but I got bored midway through. While it was laugh out loud humorous at many points, demonstrating the author’s silliness and ability to have fun, it still felt a little redundant from time to time.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the review opportunity.

There are tons of parenting guides out there, sure, but how many of them focus on raising children during the zombie apocalypse? Only Dead on the Inside hopes to educate parents on how to prepare their kids for a post-apocalyptic future and, of course, to entertain you while you read!

Now, obviously, it's not a particularly serious book because (1) zombies aren't real and (2) it's written by James Breakwell of @XplodingUnicorn fame. But don't let that stop you from checking it out!

If you're not familiar with his work, James Breakwell is a father of four girls who has taken to Twitter to share his family's antics with the world. He also has a handful of other social media accounts where he produces comics and witty commentary. (You can check out his website to find out more.) Basically, the guy is pretty hilarious and when Only Dead on the Inside was announced I couldn't wait to see what Breakwell could do with more than just 140 characters.

Breakwell certainly does a great job of bringing his unique brand of parenting humor to this book. Only Dead on the Inside takes real-life commentary on everyday parenting and applies it to the zombie apocalypse with hilarious results.

For example, dealing with a picky eater? Imagine what will happen after the dead rise and that one particular brand of dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets your kids basically lives on is no longer available. Not sure what kind of weapons to tack on to your recently amputated arm? Don't worry because there's a chart for that!

The book is actually full of fun charts and graphs as well as simple comics similar to one the of author's webcomics. Despite their simplicity I found the comics to be the best part of the whole book. Who even thinks up half of the stuff this guy does? And who else could make a comic of a child lopping off their parent's limbs to stop the zombie apocalypse as charming and fun as James Breakwell?

I will say, though, that you'll probably want to read this book in small doses. While it's a fun read it felt pretty repetitive in it's presentation. The jokes take the same sort of format all throughout and while each of the aptly titled chapter take on a different aspect of surviving the apocalypse they can read very much the same. I read through the majority of the book in one sitting and after awhile it just started to get old.

Only Dead on the Inside is a book that parents and non-parents alike can enjoy -- though readers with experience with kids will get a lot more out of it. The book couldn't have come out at a better time because it's sure to make a great gift for any parent or soon-to-be parent on your Christmas list as the holiday season approaches. (Especially for those with a good sense of humor and an appreciate for zombie flicks). Because as anyone who deals with kids on a regular basis will tell you, sometimes all you need is a good laugh now and then!

First of all I appear to be the only person in the universe not to follow James Breakwell on Twitter, Facebook etc. I had no idea who he is - I just thought this sounded funny. And honestly I have wondered when watching The Walking Dead about where all the toddlers and their parents were - even in an apocalypse it's unlikely they'd all be gone. Have you ever seen a mom when they think their kids are even been thrown the slightest bit of shade at soft play? Zombie hoards stand no chance against that unbridled rage. So I was hoping for good things and obviously a guide for the inevitable zombie outbreak. It started in my hometown years ago.

This is possibly the funniest book I've ever read (well apart from Fifty Shades but that's another story). Breakwell takes the predictable and mundane parts of life, funnies them up then transports them to a zombie world he fully admits of having no experience of - to paraphrase he points out no one has more experience with zombies than he does....but then again no one has less either. It starts a little stuttery but within a few pages it's literally laugh out loud all the way. It can be a little repetitive at times but not so much that it becomes a major issue. A great quick read that you don't have to be a parent or zombie fan to enjoy.

I received this from Netgalley for an honest review.

So.. I have no kids. I'm not really the biggest zombie fan, either. So... WHY am I reading a Parent's Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse? Well, James Breakwell is hilarious. I like his page on Facebook and am usually cracking up at his sarcasm, or that of this female dominated home. A sassy wife & 4 little girls that are going that same way. This book made me laugh, and I didn't have to relate it at all for this to happen.

Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.

I follow the author on twitter and I find his day to day experience with child rearing quite funny. This book is an extension of that although it does take a bit of imagination to equate zombie attacks and raising his children. Still, it was funny enough that it's worthwhile entertaining read. Fans will definitely like it!

Only Dead on the Inside is a parenting book for the zombie apocalypse. Glib and tongue in cheek, James Breakwell gives a new spin on the zombie genre.
Only Dead Inside is a comprehensive handbook to looting, child earing and weapons during a zombie apocalypse. It is filled with simple but hilarious comics, humorous graphs, and (funny) thought provoking flow charts. In fact, these supplements are the best part of the book. About half way through, I just started skimming the text to read the comics and the Dos and Don't lists. They were laugh out load funny and hit on human truths.
When I say I skimmed the last half of the book, I did exempt the chapter on the umbrella stroller. This was a huge pay out of hilarity. It is hands down the best chapter in the book.
Breakwell is great at short bits: tweets, comics, etc but his labor of love, the text itself, is funny but there isn't enough pay out when you want to just skip to the really good stuff.
A great first try at a book, James Breakwell entertains but hasn't learned where his strengths are yet

If you don't follow James Breakwell on Twitter, you should go do so. He's hilarious and I really love reading his tweets - I don't go on twitter often so I kinda "binge read" when I'm there which is often. So when I saw that he had a book on NetGalley I immediately requested it and put it on the front of my TBR list.

And luckily, it lived up to expectations!

I mean, a book is a lot longer than 140 characters. I wouldn't have been surprised if it ran out of steam halfway. But Breakwell did an excellent job of pacing the jokes and I laughed during every chapter.

Written in a pseudo-serious tone, Only Dead on the Inside is a handbook to help parents survive a zombie attack while keeping their kids alive. Illustrated with very crudely drawn Microsoft Paint-style comics (the comics were probably the weakest point of the book but I laughed at quite a few of them so it's not like they are complete failures), topics include:

- How to convince your kids to hide

- Food during a zombie apocalypse

- Why minivans are awesome (and what else you can use as a weapon against zombies)

- Why a zombie apocalypse means you never have to clean your house

- And what to do if you need to amputate your arm.

I would definitely recommend this to everyone and I would pick up a copy if I ever found it in a bookshop. It's funny and I really enjoyed reading it. If you've had experiences with kids (and everyone has, since you either were one or know one), you'll probably enjoy this. And his Twitter account. You should definitely check that out!

Hilarious and witty! Although I'm not a parent myself, I found James's point of view on kids downright hilarious (and kind of true). I never thought I'd read a book about zombies AND parenting and I am not disappointed. I loved his pro/cons lists as well as his "diaper cash" theory. I recommend this book for parents and not-parents who love the walking dead and zombies in general. There's literally nothing to hate in this humorous guide to parenting in the zombie apocalypse. 5 Stars!

This book was full of fun, funny, yet realistic survival advice. "Fields will turn into giant, unkempt yards full of tall grasses, weeds, and hidden zombies. Avoid these at all costs. They’re the perfect place to lose a child or a Frisbee." Great for those who believe the zombie apocalypse may happen some day, but funny enough for anyone who has ever known a child to understand. I highly recommend this book!

I have enjoyed James Breakwell's work online for many months, but somehow this first book of his doesn't seem as funny or insightful. Maybe it's the zombie theme, which I tired of about 3 minutes after it became popular. In any event, the cartoons are just as good, but the text - meh.

Because I'm a big fan of James Breakwell's twitter account I had high hopes for this title. Unfortunately, I was disappointing. All of the wit that you normally see in a Breakwell tweet was absent from this. Some of the passages were funny, but not the laugh out loud funny that I expected. The premise of saving your kids during a zombie apocalypse was also great, but I felt like something was missing. I didn't hate this but I didn't love it either.

Overall a good read. But I feel that it was drawn out and could have worked better as graphic Novel or comic.

It certainly isn't easy being a parent and I do feel like a zombie most days! Great book !

I picked this book to read even though I have no interest whatsoever in Zombie Apocalypse, because I think the author James Breakwell is hilarious on the intertubes. I can't disparage anything Zombie Apocalypse because I knew by the title that that's what this book was going to be about, and I chose to read it anyways. So I will say it is quite an accomplishment to have filled an entire book about parenting around a Zombie Apocalypse; it must have required a great investment of time, thought and energy. Basically if you like Zombie Apocalypse, and reading many many jokes about not liking vegetables, and houses and children not being clean, and family members not liking each other - then this is the satirical parenting book for you.

This book is very funny. I love it!! I have no kids but now I know what to do if zombie attack us. May be in the futur I think on this book and he save me. It's like Guide de survie en territoire zombie de Max Brooks but in funny mood.
