I made the mistake of thinking this was a book about botany - it was not. More for someone looking for a prose exploration of the outdoors, rather than a botany guide.
Beautifullyrics written book about the tall Prarie grasslands and their ecology. Not only wonderful descriptions, but a history lesson of the Osage Indians along with the fauna and animals.
An interesting take on the prairie grasslands. As one who also grew up in the midwest, in western North Dakota, I can relate to a lot of the views and details the writer gives on his impressions and ideas of the grasses, the animals, and so on. Lots of memories were awakened in me reading his accounts. I remember my father waking me up early one morning, and heading out to watch the prairie chickens do their mating dances. I was grumbling about being up so early, but once we got there it was an experience I will never forget. It made me sad to read about Mr. Lantz's dancing ground being used by teenagers. The birds, the buffalo the coyotes, etc. are all a common sight here, although dwindling, and I hope the appreciation and work by the Sierra Club remains strong in preserving the grasslands. Would highly recommend this book, just wish there were more pictures.
