I love this series! It's my comfort reading for when I'm travelling: the short length makes me feel like I can get stuck into a story even if I don't have much time, the chattiness is comforting, and it's an easy (though not dumb) read.
The characters, from my favourite to least favourite:
Michelle, a book editor who's just getting into BDSM after a divorce. She feels real to me, and deals with her problems like an adult. She gets into difficult situations through no fault of her own, and while often her hands are tied (no pun intended) and things don't go as she wants them to, she's not a pushover.
Taneesha, who works as a games company and ends up dealing with all kinds of Male Bullshit including getting doxed. I don't usually like descriptions of characters' clothing and hairstyles, but she's a badass black woman and I liked when she got dolled up.
Aditi, an author whose debut novel is about to be published. I thought I'd identify with Aditi most as she's a writer, but she frustrated me. She's such a brat, and whines whenever Michelle (her editor) asks her how her second novel is going because whhhhhyyyy should she have to write? (Because you're a writer, bitch. Get it done.)
Christina, a PA to a Hollywood movie star. She doesn't feel real to me, and neither does her boss/lover, Vivi.
Elli, a cosplayer. If I didn't know better, I'd think Elli was 12 years old. I couldn't relate to her at all and found her childish and annoying.
The books are a nice mix of all the characters, and towards the end I feel like they focused more on Michelle and Taneesha, which suited me because they were the best characters. I hope there's a season 2.
While I definitely enjoyed my experience reading this book, there are some issues with pacing and character development in the middle that left me wanting just a bit more.
In real life I would run fast from that actress, but she’s a hoot on paper, or pixel. I can see how Christina got sucked in.
I’m really enjoying this series. Every character is different, but I like them all. Did not expect Michelle to go to the workshop, but glad she did, as I learned some things. . . not as much as her, of course, but fun.
Out of all the Geek Actually books, this one was a favorite of mine as it took place at a book convention. It also made me smile and remember the convention I had been too and places in the States that I visited. In The Long Con - Ellie, Aditi, and Michelle are off to Booklovers Con in New Orleans. Ellie with her cosplay outfits meets an author on the airplane. One thing leads to another, and they become fast friends and get chatting. Remember how Ellie needs a job otherwise her parents are going to kick her out of the home, well this may be her chance actually to get a job she loves and is passionate about. Aditi is here to do some networking and chat on a panel about her book. The thing though is she hates promoting herself and talking about her books - isn't that the publisher's job? Michelle is now separated from Ted and looking for a bit of spark, what happens when she is encouraged by Aditi to check out a BDSM workshop, will her experience encourage her to put herself back on the dating market? Taneesha heads with her brother to Diego's gaming/comic store hoping to see if he wants to take things to a new level as she's not used to the one asking. Is Diego just shy and will Taneesha for a change have to make the first move? Christina is still busy with being a PA to the star Vivi and remember how they had a sexual encounter, what happens when Vivi wants more and to show her off to the world. Is Christine ready to go public and let the world know about her sexual preferences? Find out in another awesome episode of Geek Actually, this time by Cecilia Tan.
Absolutely adoring this series. Fun, geeky, sexy, with relatable work/life/lady geek-experiences. Cannot wait to read this as a whole. Excellent authors producing delectable tidbits.
Right off I will admit that I have not read the other books in this series. I chose this because I was curious and it sounded good. Well, it was a good time. It is about a group of geeky older girls trying to figure out their lives. Each girl has their own personality and I liked that. They are not cookie cutter characters. They are each developed on their own. It is well written, and fun. I liked the way the characters interacted with each other. Good read.
I loved this episode. The flow between the main characters was brilliant. Each of them has their own situation going on, and we learn enough to feel connected to them and form our own opinions of what's going on. I think what I enjoyed most was the fact that they were older and I could relate to them. I'm a geek girl and seeing us represented in very different careers and places in out lives was amazing.
This episode is pretty much the same thing I've come to expect from the series. I was upset there wasn't much Taneesha in this ep [she's my favorite], but I did actually like Elli's bits and I think she's growing on me. I also like Ruby and thought the topic of ableism was handled really well. The whole BDSM thing with Michelle had me rolling my eyes but I mostly just skimmed through those sections.
I think one thing that is stopping me from getting into these, and I know this is going to make me sound like a total hipster douche, is that all of their geeky interests are like ...really mainstream geek stuff. I get that it's easier to write about them liking Doctor Who or popular Disney movies or whatever because hey lots of people like those things so it's 'safe' but it also kind of makes it feel like ...a bit of a caricature I guess? Like you know [insert popular comic title here] or whatever. Again, I understand it's because they are trying to appeal to the widest range of people possible. But I love reading about characters that are geeky about more obscure things, even if those are things I don't know anything about personally. It can even be a cool way to learn about new fandoms instead of just having all geeks love LOTR, Star Wars, and Doctor Who for example.
