Being an only child, I find reading stories about sibling stories, for good or bad, interesting, especially when the parent(s) are elderly and estates need to be settled or divided, and decisions concerning parent(s) need to be made. Toss in weapons and highly unstable individuals and all sorts of chaos ensues. Loved the cover, it attracted my attention to the book initially. Fascinating story.
The plot of Tim McWhorter’s novel The Winding Down Hours is familiar. Dad has dementia and the siblings (who of course don’t get along) have gathered to empty out the family home. What gives this story added zest is the addition of the gun and an several unstable personalities. As a reader, you aren’t about to put this book down until you find out if the gun did put her in more danger...or was it dangerous for one of the others. Good read.
What a lovely gentle read. Tim McWhorter really has a handle on family dynamics. I was intrigued by the premise of The Winding Down Hours, and I wasn't disappointed by the story. I think what I appreciated most was the complexity of the characters, even the Father suffering with dementia. I loved the beautiful detail of the setting, and the cover is exquisite. The secrets and memories of the family were uncovered layer by layer, and I found the novel enchanting. I would definitely read more from this author.
This is the story of a family, 2 brothers and a sister, who come home to help their father sell his home before his dementia becomes too severe. All three children have some serious emotional and addictive behaviors. It was hard to like any of them. This book explores grown children coming to grips with childhood problems and everyday events.
Mason, Reid and Janine meet at their family's summer house to pack it up and facilitate their father's move to Mason's house. But what should be a bittersweet and nostalgic time is filled with bad memories and old regrets. The three siblings are wrought with fine detail by McWhorter and feel true to life. McWhorter shows us the inner thoughts of these damaged people in a way that allows us to empathize with them, even in the midst of their bad behavior. Beautifully written and true to life, THW WINDING DOWN HOURS will surely make you think about your own family dynamics.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review of this book. This is a story about the Taylor family and their summers spent growing up on Cape Cod. Mason is the middle child who tries to bring everyone together during their last weekend after the house is sold.
