I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for a honest review. I love a historical romance and the summary on this one drew me in.
It was well thought out and characters were very well built and established. I loved the slow burn between the main character and the Duke and there was just the right balance of naughty and plot line. Action scenes were done very well and I can't wait for the next in the series!
Elizabeth Wilcox vowed to do anything for her sister. Her life ceased to be after her sister was taken away. So, she did what she could and worked for a man that would help her get her sister out of prison. She was often told lies about what was needed and she struggled with the morality of what she had to do but one thing remained consistent. Do anything to help Amanda. She met the Duke of Montague, Marcus made her feel things that made her hunger for me. When she is given the opportunity she makes a decision will she betray the man she has come to love or free her sister? A great tale of a sister's devotion.
When I saw the blurb and cover of Disciplined ByThe Duke I was immediately intrigued and needed to find out more about this book, so when I got the chance to read it early I was so thrilled and I dived into this book as soon as I could. I don't think I have ever read a book quite like this one. We follow Liz and Montague in this story , there was something so compelling about these two, Liz is working at Montague estate but she is really a spy who was sent to find a letter, however, what ends up happening is that as these two get closer and the attraction between them intesifies into a passionate affair .I loved this book so much I have not read many historical romances with BDSM aspects so I had no idea what to expect and what I discovered was sexy (seriously this story was so very sexy), a uniquie historical romance that I just could not put down. I was so happy with how everything ending for these characters and at the same time so very excited to get my hands on this next book in this Lords of Discipline series. Disciplined By The Duke was a fantastic story and if you are wondering if you should read it too the answer is yes I highly recommend it! go pick this book up as soon as you can.
This book had 2 plot lines that intertwined well. It was a quick and entertaining read.
Liz’s sister killed their father and now sits in a prison. Liz is determined to keep her sister from being hanged and is willing to do anything to save her. The Earl of Westmore says he will help if Liz does everything he asks of her. Her final assignment is to pose as a maid in the Duke of Montague’s house and retrieve a letter. Sounds easy right? They have a chemistry that makes it hard for the Duke to stay away even though he doesn’t tup the help. Add in the vague connection she has to the Earl and he sees all these red flags.
For the most part, I enjoyed this story. The plot is unique and the actual story is fascinating. Reading the blurb, I was expecting there to be more BDSM which intrigued me of course. However, I found the steamy scenes to be lacking. There is a hint of BDSM but it’s not what was expected. If I read the next book in this series, I will readjust my expectations and I feel like I will enjoy it better.
Rating: 3.5 stars
It was the synopsis for Disciplined by the Duke that caught my eye, even though I had read books with the simular storyline many times, the hint that it maybe a little more risque, had me wanting to read it, and while I did enjoy the book, in my opinion, it didn't live up to its promise.
From the beginning of the book, it felt like we jumped into the middle of the story, we didn't meet Elizabeth's sister until near the end. I just felt that if we could have had more back story in the beginning, the book would have flowed better.
With that being said, I did enjoy the character's, Elizabeth is definitely a relatable character, and you do feel her plight. Marcus is a not so stuffy Duke, with the love of using the F-bomb, way too much, and I loved his cast of friends! I just wish we had seen more of them. I had also wished this book had a little more of the risque side to it, but I think the amount of sex in this book with satisfy almost everyone.
As I said in the beginning, this book is very good, and the author did a very nice job, which is why I give Disciplined by the Duke 3.5 stars.
Confession time--I didn't examine the blurb for this one all too well before signing up to read it (the title and series name got me, I admit it), so the part of the plot that dealt with Liz determined to do pretty much anything to save her sister from prison and Marcus's side business of espionage came as a bit of a surprise. A pleasant surprise, though, because let's face it, when you're reading BDSM with your teenage kids just feet away from you, it sometimes feels a bit awkward. The other plot elements, therefore, were a nice distraction, and made both Liz and Marcus more sympathetic and relatable than they might have seemed otherwise.
Disciplined by the Duke is a decent debut that combines historical romance, intrigue (spies have been my weakness since pretty much forever...), and light BDSM--though there were a few things here that gave me pause, Ms. Chase definitely has my attention for the next book in the series, which will feature Liz's sister and another of Marcus's friends and fellow spies.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This is the first book in the Lords of Discipline serie and I loved it.
To save her sister from the hangman’s noose, after her sister murdered their father, miss Elizabeth Wilcox is a spy, masquerading as a chambermaid in the household of the Duke of Montague. She is willing to do everything to save her sister, lie, play a servant, a thief, a submissive.
It is well written and I loved every second. I can't wait for the next book in the Lords of Discipline serie.
I really liked this historical read. The story has plenty of drama and suspense and the chemistry between Liz and Marcus is intense. I liked the characters as well as the premise to the story. I admit from the title you expect a bit more discipline then there actually is however overall the story is entertaining.
The day her sister murdered their abusive father, Elizabeth Wilcox stopped being a gentleman’s daughter. Willing to do anything to save her sister from the hangman’s noose, now she is a spy... A servant. A liar. A thief. A submissive.
Masquerading as a parlor maid and entrenched in the Duke of Montague’s estate, Liz is willing to risk all to uncover the secrets that would save her sister. But submitting to the duke’s peculiar brand of discipline surprises her with a heady mixture of pleasure and pain. Eager to relinquish control of her messy life, Liz soon craves the rough hands of Montague and his powerful, passionate attentions. Can she succumb to the hot sting of his hand and the gentleness of his kisses without revealing her true identity and darkest secrets? And what punishment will she face when he realizes her betrayal?
Review:
First in a new series and a good start.
I loved the beginning and the build up of the story and relationship between Liz and Marcus. It is definitely sexy, but from the title I was expecting just a little more on the kinky side. The scenes that were in there were definitely sexy and well-written. I liked how strong Liz is and how much she goes through to help her sister. Marcus is definitely sexy and dominate, I just wish more of that was shown in the story. The story has a good amount of action and intrigue to it also.
Again, great start! I am not sure which Lord is next but cannot wait to read about them.

'Disciplined by the Duke' by Alyson Chase is the First Book in the New Series called " The Lords of Discipline". This is the story of Elizabeth 'Liz' Wilcox and Marcus the Duke of Montague.
Liz is trying desperately to save her sister who in locked up in prison for killing their father. The Earl of Westmore happen upon Liz when she was upset about her sister's imprisonment. The Earl offered to help her get her sister free if she but do a few 'things' for him. Of course Liz aggregated and did all of the illegal things he asked her to do but now the Earl has one last task for her to do. The Earl promises that this will be the last and her sister will be saved from being Hanged.
The Earl wants her to steal a letter with information that will help advance the Earl. Liz is to go and work as a Chambermaid in the Duke of Montague's house...there she will steal a letter to complete her job for him. Liz was once a sheltered Lady but now she doesn't feel so sheltered. Liz's physical innocents is still there but her mental is not longer.
Liz is taken back by how much Marcus does not at all appear to look like a Duke. Marcus does not dress as you would think one would and a normal Duke wouldn't be so strong. But Liz fights any feelings she has because she needs to save her sister at any cost.
Marcus is a man who observes people and looks for their secrets or differences. As someone who likes questionable sexual habits he has made it a priority to know if something isn't what it seems.
Liz in on of those things...she doesn't appear to be what she tries to say she is. In addition, Marcus has become fascinated by Liz and wants her...but can he have her?
Liz has the goal of freeing her sister, which can only be done she thinks if she steal from Marcus to satisfy the Earl.
I love historical Romance and you really don't see to many with BDSM tone to them. So this was a nice surprise...I wish we saw more of them. Overall Loved the Book...there was a few times I felt Liz might have done things differently and I really liked Marcus.

I feel like I am in the minority because I enjoyed the novel. I do agree that it was a bit predictable, and the action at the end seemed a bit…extra and messy. I also thought it was doing to be more BDSM than it was based on the synopsis. I have read multiple historical erotica involving BDSM, so I was bit disappointed in that aspect. However, if I separate that out, I enjoyed the erotic scenes.
I enjoyed the characters. I felt the duke was everything I wanted in a duke in terms of control and patience. Despite my better judgement, I also like Elizabeth although I felt conflicted. On one hand, I appreciated her doing her what she thought needed to be done to save her sister. On the other hand, she was doing nobody favors by not taking care of herself and I feel like things could have been resolved much I think the reason I liked her is because she made stupid decisions and it made her more human. She screwed up rather than being screwed over.
Other than that, this is just a rainy day read. There is no mind blowing plot, I have read novels with better erotic scenes, and the characters were realistic if a bit frustrating. While nothing was flat out terrible, I felt nothing was great either.
It looks like this is the first historical written by Ms. Chase and I liked it. It was a little slow at the beginning but once the action started it was really good. Marcus is a great character. He is caring whether it is his servants or his friends. And he is a spy. Liz is pulled into espionage against her will all in the name of rescuing her sister. Marcus and Liz are great together. Like I said, the last 60% of the book is really where the book comes alive. Everything is happening so fast.
Looking forward to the next book. Yeah, Rothschild and Amanda.
The book is an enjoyable read as a historical romance. The description and title seem to bring to mind that it's going to have bdsm and a relationship that is more dominant. While there are allusions and some light bdsm scenes, it's not a lot. So if you put that out of your mind and read it as a steamy historical romance novel, I think you'll enjoy it more and have it meet your expectations better. The book itself is very well written. I had worried since it was the first book from Alyson Chase but it turns out that she has written under another pen name.
The start of the book is great in that it draws you in. There's a lot of anticipation and sexual tension that's built in in the beginning between the main characters, especially when we read the Duke's thoughts. Additionally, there are references to the Duke's appetites that build that anticipation. The romance itself developed at a good pace, while there is an instant curiosity and quick attraction, we get to watch the feelings develop. The main characters are quite likable with the male lead being strong and honorable and the female lead isn't a simpering helpless woman. Although Liz does need help, she's tough and brave about her situation to help her sister. Overall, it's a good read.
3.5 stars
This was a nice intro into what should shape up to be a good series. A group of friends, who are high ranking peers, are working as spies for the Crown. Someone is selling information to the French and they are trying to find out who it is. Well, that scoundrel is blackmailing Liz Wilcox and sends her to the Duke of Montague's home to search for the next piece of Intel he needs to sell to France. What no one expects is for Liz and Montague to fall for each other.
While this hints at BDSM, it's very mild and its not the focus of the book. The focus is Liz's story of what she's doing and why. I really felt the last 20-25% was fantastic! It moved a lot quicker than the rest of the book and was filled with action.
I'm looking forward to the next book because of the characters. It should be interesting.

Plot:
I enjoyed this book for the most part and was willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of enjoyment.
The plot in the first half of the book was slow-paced. I did not particularly love the hero or the heroine, but they did have really good chemistry. The author did a great job building the tension and the slow burn between Marcus and Liz. The way that they both started feeling the pull of attraction was well-written, no matter how unrealistic it was to have a duke falling for one of his maids. But the author managed to convince me that a chambermaid had indeed gotten the duke's attention. That being said, I understood the attraction and how it was based on control and disciplinary, which was exactly what drew Marcus to Liz.
One of the scenes that annoyed me was the whole pantaloons vs. breeches debate. This story is unrealistic enough without this forced scene and the only reason this scene was added was to ensure that Julius was made aware of the attraction between Marcus and Liz.
The plot, thankfully, started picking up in the last third of the book to the point where I was unable to put it down. I found myself enjoying the rescue and spy plot a lot more than I enjoyed the romance.
Characters:
While I did enjoy the chemistry between the Marcus and Liz, I nevertheless feel that characters and their romance were underdeveloped. I failed to understand how they actually fell in love when it was clear that they barely knew each other. They only started to really get to know each other at the halfway mark. I personally felt that it was mostly lust between them. The only time I really felt something more between them was after Liz had left his house. That was also the exact moment where the plot started picking up. I also don't blame Liz for not trusting Marcus, because she did not know Marcus well enough to know that he would stand by her. I was so happy that Liz finally got what she came for and was finally acting on her rescue of her sister, Amanda.
One of my favourite things about Liz is her undeniable loyalty to her sister. While she did indulge in her desires with the Duke, she never once forgot what her goal was and I really admired that.
I also loved the introduction of the Marcus's friends and can't wait to find out more about them.
Writing:
Alyson Chase is a fine writer, but there are some modern slang that were included in the book. For instance, words and expressions like the following felt very anachronistic:
- "For fuck's sake"
- "Oh, fuck it"
- "Whoa"
- "Here's the real kicker"
- "Fuckwit"
- "Piece of shit"
I am used to anachronisms in HR novels, but this novel was peppered with too many modern expressions and detracted from my reading.
Moreover, some of the words and expressions used to describe the sex scenes were a bit too much. I think the author was trying to use certain words and descriptions to up the heat level. I feel that the author did a great job writing the first few intimate scenes because they were more sensual in nature, minus some weird descriptions of Marcus's erection. I think that she should have kept going with that kind of writing instead.
Overall, not a bad start to a series. I am SO excited for the next book! Amanda and Julius is the kind of angst-ridden pairing that I would enjoy. That first chapter excerpt was so good!! I can't wait!! I have a feeling that I am going to love the next book!!
Elizabeth Wilcox desperately is trying to save her sister from the hangman noose. She’s been spying for an Earl who promises to save her sister if she does this one last job, infiltrate the Duke of Montague’s estate. Masquerading as a parlor maid Liz is willing to risk all to uncover the secrets that would save her sister. The one thing she doesn’t count on his Marcus Montague whose peculiar brand of discipline surprises her. Things become complicated when she starts to have feeling for Marcus and stressed about the possible of betraying him. With each gentle kiss and passionate interlude Liz wonders can she continue without revealing her true identity and darkest secrets. Both Liz and the Marcus are shadowed with secrets and past tragedy they need to overcome to find their HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review. The story of Liz and Marcus is well written and keeps your attention. Liz is sent to the duke's home to retrieve a message that she is led to believe tells of a shipment that her blackmailer wants to steal. Unknown to her it is actually info regarding English traitors. Liz serves as a maid who has caught Marcus' eye and he wants to own her. There is a HEA ending but it is a story full of intrigue and danger. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for a good read. I wish this author would have an epilogue to the story.
Combining a spicy historical romance with a bit of BDSM seems like a dream come true for those that live a bit on the wild side. I was looking for a bit of spice and this one fit the bill.
The story is unique and not like many of the other historical romances. Good character development. Montague is pretty yummy and a sweet guy. Most guys depicted in HR are kind of jerks. He is kind and sexy.
There are a few quirks that stuck out and made this a good read VS a great read. Liz spent a ton of time just wandering around and shirking her duties without issue. Reality... not happening, esp. as a new employee. There were also several scenes where they were together with no issues or fallout from other staff. That was different as everyone knows what happens in a house. She also became very forward and while it led to some hot scenes, it was also different.
This read more like a mix of HR and contemporary romance. While it is not a bad thing, it can be confusing to the reader. The story overall is good with plenty of spicy action, light BDSM scenes, (which there could have been more of) and uniqueness. Looking forward to more in this series!
Elizabeth Wilcox is determined to rescue her sister from murder charges. She gets duped by a gentleman of the Ton who promised to help get the charges dropped. Instead the villain uses it to blackmail Elizabeth into infiltrating the Duke of Montague’s estate as a parlor maid.
She soon succumbs to the Duke' s discipline but can she truly submit and reveal the truth of her spying?
This story started off with promise but faltered at times, especially with the explanation of why submitting would help Elizabeth. She liked the punishment but the 'why' of it was missing.
