This series was so wonderful! Spellbinding and very mysterious! I can't wait to recommend this to all my friends and family
This collection consists of the first three books in Alan Dean Foster’s long-running series that features a human from our Earth falling into a fantasy world of giant talking animals. In this place he’s a musician/magician, but his spells hardly ever turn out as he’d intended; just about the only song he got right was Sloop John B, and that didn’t end well for him either. His diverse comrades—that word used to appease the dragon—include a wise old turtle, a Cockney-accented dirty-minded otter, a dapper rabbit, an angry bat, and two gorgeous but deadly human ladies. This is more than anything a comedy road adventure, with the group fighting evil and sometimes each other on their way to a face-off with the most dangerous foe any world has even seen.
The writing doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the reader shouldn’t either; just read and enjoy and don’t try too hard to make sense of it. . .
The Spellsinger Series is a wonderful trilogy by the prolific author Alan Dean Foster. For decades I enjoyed Foster's work, but until recently I though that he only did movie tie in, or movie connected books. He is a great writer, and I was excited to be late in learning that he has penned many stand alone novels. Thus I happily picked up this trilogy of the Spellsinger books, and I am happy to report that I was not disappointed.
The first book in the series - "Spellsinger" reveals the protagonist as "Jon-Tom" a name given to him by creatures in this "other world" where he suddenly finds himself. A college student, and part time Janitor Jon-Tom has no idea why he has been transported or what to do. From then on, as this short first book in the trilogy reveals, Jon-Tom meets and teams up with a plethora of characters - a turtle wizard, a ready to go into battle otter, a red haired warrior woman, and more. The group soon learns that Jon-Tom was inadvertantly summoned as the person who can help fight a battle of evil that is forthcoming. Still, in the midst of the first adventure our protagonist discoveres that he has magical powers in this new world, that of a Spellsinger - a wizard who can call forth needs through song.
The only negative I would post is if I was reading this novel as a stand alone, as the first face paced book ends rather quickly with a cliffhanger. Thankfully the other two volumes are included in this set, and the reader will no doubt want to continue through to the satisfying conclusion!
If you are looking for a get away to a fantasy world that is a bit different and filled with "in jokes" that us folks in the modern, real, world can enjoy then The Spellsinger Advetures will not disappoint!
