Definitely excited to read more works from this author!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy of this title.
SEQUEL PLEASE! Loved it - the story of a girl monster hunter and her loyal butler. Monsters, airplanes, an evil count! What more could you possibly want? Well, a sequel. A sequel is what I want.
This is a strong heroine with depth and character. The supporting cast is well-executed. Sympathy for all is achieved effortlessly.
Ummmmm... no.
I've tried to be a little pickier about the graphic novels I request and review, but since I'm not really familiar with a lot of the authors and artists working in the graphic novel industry today, occasionally one slips by me that doesn't appeal on any level. Such as this one.
Scarlett Hart is a teen (or pre-teen?) and comes from a family of monster hunters. She is determined to prove that she is ready to fight monsters as well. With the aid of the family butler and a number of steampunk-like weapons - often larger than she - Scarlett fends off a number of monsters. But perhaps the most perilous of monsters is Count Stankovic - the family arch nemesis who is out to discredit the Hart family.
I recognize that this is targeted to a younger reading audience, but even school aged children deserve fiction that has plot, motivation, and character development. This is primarily lots of preparation sequence, followed by a quick fight, then a threat, then more preparation...repeat. It is dull and repetitive and the threat of Stankovic (nice name!) is only slightly redeeming.
The last portion of the book - if a reader can make it that far - is a little bit interesting, when Scarlett finds the family airplane (an unusual gadget that she flies quite easily), but even this doesn't reach much potential.
The artwork is incredibly sub-par. I was so hoping that this was just a rough draft, but nothing describes it this way. The sketches included at the end of the book are better drawn and more detailed than the 'finished' art throughout.
I found nothing about this book that would make me want to buy it or recommend it to any aged reader.
Looking for a good book? We'll have to keep looking because this isn't it.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
The art was not for me--I'm not sure if it was the digital version or what, but I had tons of trouble reading this due to the fuzzy, low-quality art.
A decent read! Beautiful artwork. The story is quite predictable and sometimes quite superficial. I enjoyed the character of Scarlett - badass girl is awesome!
Superficial. Everything felt already familiar, as though I'd seen it all before (which I have, since "spunky girl adventurer" needs something more to set it apart). Boring and flat; couldn't keep my attention.
What a fun little supernatural romp of a graphic novel! I think it very nicely sets the stage for Scarlett and Napoleon and what's to come for them. Scarlett is a spunky, fun heroine who you immediately root for. I think all of the elements of this novel were well-developed. This is absolutely perfect for young readers with a penchant for media that includes things that go bump in the night. So spooky and enjoyable.
Thank you to Netgalley and First Second for this review copy.
This was a very cute comic about a young girl fighting monsters in a society that doubts her abilities due to her age and gender. Seeing her interactions with her butler/caretaker were very precious as he was always worried about her but ultimately respected her and let her do the things he knew she was capable of. The world was fleshed out just enough while still being a story that ultimately focused on its characters, their growth, and their adventures. I wanted to know more about some of the unresolved mysteries and am curious if there will be a sequel.
I mistakenly wrote my previous review based on a different book. I'm so sorry. My young daughters were confused when I originally asked. I have since changed my rating to 5 stars (here and on Goodreads) based on my daughters' opinions. They both LOVED this book and are already asking me to find out if the author is writing another book. Great job entertaining my girls! They love graphic novel style books to read in their free time.
Scarlett Hart is an orphaned monster hunter, growing up with longtime family retainers at the family estate. She has a dastardly foe and must foil a nefarious plot, and there are monsters to be fought and bounties to be captured! This title is gleeful and swashbuckling and perfect for those kids who you know will graduate to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Gorgeous.
Scarlett Hart aided by her Butler Napoleon and Mrs Whiteare trying to raise enough money to keep her ancestral home. But her means, monster hunting, is in jeopardy due to the machinations of Count Stankovic. Plenty of fun action and monsters. The character interaction and humour aided by the artwork make this a fun book to read!
Not a mind blowing book but quite readable. It isn't a particularly complex plot .THe skullduggery is predictable. Still, its entertaining. Just because you can guess what will happen doesn't mean it isn't fun.
Scarlett Hart is an underage monster hunter who has the police after her for illegal monster hunting.. When she uncovers a plot by a fellow monster hunter to create monsters so he could kill them and collect the ransom, Scarlett defies the law to stop his mad plan. Scarlett Hart is a fun adventure romp full of brave heroes, dastardly villains, and exciting thrills. Readers will like Scarlett's willingness to do the right thing and bravery even though everyone around her keeps telling her she's too young. Yet, it is an adult monster hunter who is irresponsibly endangering people by creating monsters just so he could collect the bounty. Overall Scarlett Hart, Monster Hunter is an exciting back with a lesson about how adults are not necessarily always right just because they are adults.
I enjoyed the action in Scarlett Hart: Monster Hunter. At first, the story is confusing because it drops the reader into the middle of the action without explanation. The plot slowly unravels and probably makes reading the book more exciting for teens, but I was just confused. The art was wonderful, but I was disappointed to see that the speech bubbles were so large. At times, the white space was overwhelming and I just wanted to see more of the background scenery. Overall, it was enjoyable.
This, unfortunately, just didn't compare to many of the other excellent graphic novels that are out there for readers aged 9-12. I didn't really enjoy the illustration style and while the premise is both fun and interesting, I found that the storytelling fell a bit flat. I can see some younger readers enjoying this but for me, I think there are many more interesting options out there.
Slightly Buffy-esque in tone, this graphic novel features Scarlett Hart, teenage monster hunter, and her guardian, a man who is perhaps more attached to his car than he ought to be. (Oh, and "Department of Irregularity" is a delightful name for an organization.)
Scarlett Hart: Monster Hunter by Marcus Sedgwick and Thomas Taylor is a graphic novel for middle grade readers which is currently scheduled for release on April 3 2018. Scarlett Hart, orphaned daughter of two legendary monster hunters, is determined to carry on in her parents’ footsteps—even if the Royal Academy for the Pursuit and Eradication of Zoological Eccentricities says she’s too young to fight perilous horrors. But whether it's creepy mummies or a horrid hound, Scarlett won’t back down, and with the help of her loyal butler and a lot of monster-mashing gadgets, she’s on the case. With her parent’s arch-rival, Count Stankovic, ratting her out to T.R.A.P.E.Z.E. and taking all the monster-catching rewards for himself, it’s getting hard for Scarlett to do what she was born to do. And when more monsters start mysteriously manifesting than ever before, Scarlett knows she has to get to the bottom of it and save the city whatever the danger!
Scarlett Hart: Monster Hunter had great potential, but I feel like it missed its mark. I was completely unimpressed by the art, but since i had a digital arc I am willing to give it a pass for the most part, because this sort of file never looks as good as the real thing. However, even with the allowances I give for galleys, I found the art to be a little lazy and sadly this carried through the character development. I found Scarlett to be very one dimensional and unlikable, and the big bad to be even less developed. The adventure part was okay, but I thought the character work was poor enough that I really could not care about what happened to anyone. The poor butler that does the majority of the work is not even given a name. I had so much hope for this, and really wanted to like it. Unfortunately I was not given the Buffy-eske heroine I wanted, rather I got a girl that more resembled her winy, incompetent sister.
Scarlett Hart: Monster Hunter is not all I had hoped, but I can still see a market for it.
What a kick-ass, adorable graphic novel!
Scarlett Hart and her butler-sidekick, Napoleon, are continuing in the Hart monster-hunting tradition-even though it's technically illegal since Scarlett is underage. Despite Scarlett's prowess as a monster-hunter, the dastardly "Count" Stankovic and his underling keep poaching her kills! But is the count just stinky . . . or is he putrid? Only Scarlett and Napoleon can stop him before it's too late!
This middle-grade fantasy/steampunk graphic novel kept me engaged and entertained for the entire read. Scarlett is a spunky, courageous heroine who is determined to do whatever she can to save her family's home and defeat evil. The illustrations are simplistic but I really liked the moment-by-moment panels that kept the story moving at a brisk pace. The snarky, age-appropriate dialogue was fun and just the right amount-not too much and not too little.
Perfect for younger readers who love monster hunting, adventure and new insults!
I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
Fun graphic novel! Felt like Clue characters meeting Supernatural story line. I hope there is more to read!
