A book about unity in the most unique of ways. Well illustrated - bright and colourful. An enjoyable second adventure for the Star Scouts.
Another great Star Scouts book that brings the galaxy together in a way I wish our planet would follow. It's lots of fun to see Avani as the alien landing on a planet that hasn't made contact before. Lessons about friendship and working together abound but you'll hardly notice because of all the super fun adventures.
Review that will appear on GoodReads on March 6:
Avani is invited to join the exclusive Star Scouts club, the League of Lasers. Membership requires passing an ordeal…but on the way to their ordeal trials Avani and Pam's spaceships have an accident and they are stranded on an unknown planet in an area where communications are limited. Can these two enemies work together to survive and get rescued? Meanwhile, Avani's troop has to break it to Mr Patel why his daughter has suddenly disappeared.
Another fun adventure with Avani and gang. Her ongoing challenges with getting food on the planet are humorous. The world Avani and Pam are stranded on is quite imaginative with some nods to classic movies thrown in. And I liked the interpersonal issues that are addressed as even readers solidly grounded to Earth will identify with those and perhaps pick up some healthy friendship advice they can use. In all, another fantastic scifi middle grade graphic novel adventure that should appeal to a broad range of readers. I already have several students asking when this will arrive so they can devour it.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content or decency issues. Crashes and serious situations as well as some punching in self-defense but no one seems seriously hurt.
I enjoyed Mike Lawrence’s Star Scouts when it came out last year, so I was thrilled to see that there’s a sequel. Star Scouts: The League of Lasers opens by reminding us of Avani and her interstellar friends. She’s been invited to join the League of Lasers, an elite club for star scouts.
While on a try-out mission for membership, Avani gets to put all her scout skills into practice when her smart-aleck spaceship crash lands. Those skills include patience with her alien rival Pam, since they have to team up to survive and get rescued.
The other scouts try to cover up her absence, preventing her father from finding out what she’s been up to. Only since they aren’t very good at what they do, soon enough, he’s helping out in the rescue mission.
As in the previous book, Lawrence has translated scouting-style activities to comedy science fiction with plenty of messages about cooperation and acceptance. It’s all accompanied by comfortable, welcoming cartooning that captures well the imaginative settings and activities. Readers will find plenty to spur their imagination and build suspense as Avani and Pam struggle with being aliens on another planet.
Mabel and Jen’s rivalry over which one is Avani’s best friend provides a character-based hook to counterpoint the space-faring adventures. By emphasizing similarities regardless of species, Lawrence reminds us of the potential wonder of the greater universe out there while making the characters easy to relate to.
This graphic novel, designed for middle grade elementary school readers, contains aliens, action, slime and survival challenges. The plot, however, seemed very simplistic, and perhaps not interesting enough for seasoned middle grade graphic novel consumers.
The much-anticipated sequel to 2017's Star Scouts is here! Avani Patel is rocking the Star Scouts, so much that she's been invited to join a secret society of elite scouts: The League of Lasers. Sounds awesome, right? But there's a catch: she has to survive her initiation challenge. While on her way to the planet where she's supposed to undergo her challenge, her ship throws her off course and crash lands onto a strange planet. With a methane atmosphere. And she's stranded with Pam, her nemesis. Together, the two Scouts have to figure out how to survive - and to do that, they need to put their differences past them.
I love this series for so many reasons: there's a child of color leading the pack; there are messages about resilience and teamwork; and most importantly, it's just so much fun! Mike Lawrence's dialogue between characters is never slow and never dull, and always believable. He tackles middle grade situations like disagreements and jealousy between friends, but always makes sure to bring things to a resolution through talking and mutual understanding. The humor is smart and the artwork is engaging. Give this to all your Zita the Spacegirl fans and tell them to make space in their hearts for the Star Scouts.
Great female lead in this graphic novel. Loved the take on the scout troop idea in space. Book contains space exploration, encountering new things/people and friendship. I did not read the first book in the series but found that this title could stand on its own.
This was so much fun! Avani is a member of the intergalactic Star Scouts. This is already pretty exciting (especially for me, who hasn't read the first book, Star Scouts, but believe me, I will!), but a robot arrives on her doorstep, informing her that she's also invited to join League of Lasers, an elite group of scouts.
Things quickly go awry, however, and Avani is forced to explore a hostile new planet with fellow scout, Pam -- someone Avani does not like very much.
What was there not to like? Adventures in space; bright, vivid illustrations; positive girl role models and friendships; and scouting. Awww! I was a girl scout when I was a kid, but I would have loved to have been a Star Scout!
I'm definitely getting my own copy of this, as well as the first book, and saving them for my daughter, in hopes she'll like them when she's in elementary school.

The plot is intriguing, an Earth where aliens, robots and humans all live together! The art is consistent and interesting, unfortunately, the text was a bit difficult to read and dampened my enjoyment slightly.
