A good read. I enjoyed reading this book. Some parts near the end were a little far-fetched but still makes for a good read.
Oh. My. God. I am struggling to put in words. This powerful thriller got me neglecting everything since the very first page. It is the first novel I read from T. R. Ragan and honestly it was so good, so intense that I’m struggling to put in to words here.
First we meet private investigator Jessie Cole whose sister’s been missing for 10 years.
Second we meet Ben Morrison, a crime reporter who 10 years ago had a terrible car accident, suffered from amnesia ever since.
Third, we meet the Heartless killer and let me tell you, there are a lot of gruesome torture scenes that will probably make your stomach turn.
So, how they’re related? Quick brief without spoilers:
One day Ben Morrison watches a cold case tv show about Jessie Cole’s sister and suddenly he has a flashback. He knew her.
From that moment my friends, the story will not give you a break. This a fast pace novel and if you love a good crime/suspense/thriller you will looove this one.
ALL THE STARS for T. R. Ragan!!
Oh My God!
First of all, thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review! Thank you NetGalley for giving me a chance to read this utterly awesome book!
I was hooked right from the beginning. I must admit it was a bit gory, the whole escaping from the burning car bit but it hooked me right in!
My favorite thing about this book was that it didn't focus on just one incident. It started with Sophie's missing case, and later the peeping Tom case, then the Heartless Killer and the missing person case of Zee Gatley, the Schizophrenic girl. The author wove all of these various incidents so intricately that it blew me. She's so awesome. There's no other word to describe it.
Her Last Day was full of suspense, mystery, blood-lots of blood! & a whole lot of craziness and I absolutely loved it!
(The review has been posted on my Facebook blog today: AnkysBookBubble, link below.)
Jessie’s mother abandoned them. Her father takes to drinking. Her younger sister, Sophie, got pregnant when she was sixteen. One night Sophie goes out but she never comes back. Now after ten years she’s still missing and Jessie’s searching for her. she’s become a private detective and she takes care of her niece.
Ben is a crime reporter. Ten years ago he had an accident, the one that no one came out alive except Ben. He lost his memories that day. Now after ten years, he got married with two kids but he can’t remember about her past or about his accident until he saw Sophie’s picture on TV. So he contacts Jessie to help her find Sophie. But what’s the string between Sophie and Ben? Can Jessie trust him? Is Sophie alive or dead?
But Jessie has another problem! She shoots some one and claims she was defending herself but the evidences are against her! Who wants to get rid of her? And why?
You think the story is just this!? Nope, you’re wrong! Jessie’s friend, Colin, is a detective. One of his cases is about Heartless Killer! Six years, thirteen victims! And he doesn’t have anything that can help him to find out about the perp. Until now!
The author didn’t finish there! A man goes to Jessie and wants her help to find her daughter who has schizophrenia and she suffers from depression and hallucinations. But he, himself, is so weird and the neighbors don’t tell good things about him! So what’s wrong with him? and where is her daughter?!
Well, as you can see this story is full of suspense and I enjoyed every sec of it. it’s really a page turner. I couldn’t put it down for a minute. the writing was awesome and the characters were well-written. It was my first read by this author but definitely won’t my last. Told in multiple POV, 3rd person. it’s the first installment in "Jessie Cole" series but it can be read as a stand-alone. Overall, I loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!
Thanks to T.R. Ragan, Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the advanced digital copy in exchange an honest review.
I loved this book. It's a great page Turner from the beginning to the end.
"Control was power, and power was everything."
Wow, talk about powerful! This is my first novel by T.R. Ragan and what a first impression! Her writing was impressive, and the multiple storylines just hit you in the face like a cobweb in the night, you can't break free... you're all wrapped up in them!
Jessie Cole has spent 10 years wondering what happened to her sister, Sophie, she's the reason she became a private investigator. After years of searching the case went cold. Sophie's story is aired on an episode of Cold Case TV, one in which investigative reporter Ben Morrison happens to witness. A sudden surge of recognition flashes through his mind, strange, he hasn't felt this way in 10 years. Not since his fatal accident. The doctors said this might happen, that he might start seeing things, having flashbacks. Ben meets up with Jessie and sets out to see if Sophie's case can help reveal the answers to his past. Meanwhile, Jessie has been hired by a frantic father to search for his missing daughter, Zee, who suffers from schizophrenia. She has a history of wandering off when she's off her medication, but's what's worse, there's a sadistic killer at large, The Heartless Killer. Jessie's not sure if Zee is just wandering about, maybe at a friend's house, or if she could be suffering at the hands of The Heartless Killer. As if Jessie doesn't have enough on her plate with trying to find the missing girl, Zee, and uncover the truths about her sister's disappearance, she's now facing time in prison for shooting a man! As I said, there's so much going on here!
The character development in this novel was outstanding! You have such a sense of who these characters are and their is such a likability, or dislike even that you're so coupled with their stories. Hell, even the dog jumps off the page, he's leery at first, but then rises up and becomes valiant and strong. Almost like Jessie herself. It's like they say... a pet is like their owner, and often they come into your life when you need them the most. And The Heartless Killer and his story... well... I won't begin to go too much into that, but everyone is in for a real treat with his twisted undoing.
Even though there were so many different storylines, I found that each one was tied up very nicely. They were not rushed, or over done. I also didn't feel that I was bored by one story and anxious to get back to the other. They were all cohesive and very entertaining. I very much enjoyed this novel and I cannot wait for the next one in the series.
I want to thank NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and T.R. Ragan for allowing me the opportunity to read this novel in exchange for my review. "See it. Imagine it. Make it happen."
Two mysteries in one- both will keep you wondering and awake at night. This is a very dark novel with lots of twists and turns. Multiple bodies and horrific situations. I could not out it down- stayed up all night reading it.
A new PI series from TR Ragan. I loved the Lizzie Gardner and Faith McMann series and couldnt wait for this book. It was one of the first books that I was approved for on Netgalley and it is finally close enough to release date to read and review it. An enjoyable read of Jessie Cole and her niece Olivia. Looking forward to reading more in this series. Thank you to Thomas and Mercer for an advance copy of this book to read and review
I have enjoyed T R Ragan's series of books featuring Lizzy Gardner so was looking forward to this new series featuring Private Investigator Jessie Cole. Jessie is facing the threat of jail for shooting a lawyer in self defence and has to prove that he was the attacker not her. Ben is a reporter who suffers from retrospective amnesia following an horrific car crash but finds that he recognises a photo of Jessie's missing sister. Jessie's boyfirend is a police officer who is investigating a serial killer. These three stories are then woven together to form a real good read. I look forward to reading what happens in the next book in the series. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Her Last Day is a book in a new series featuring Private Investigator Jessie Cole. It is my first experience reading a TR Ragan book and while I enjoyed it enough to read more from this author, I ultimately found Her Last Day to be just ok.
The book contained, what I would consider, three main story lines. First, Jessie shoots a prominent lawyer in self-defense and faces the threat of jail time if she can not prove she was the attacked and not the attacker. Next, an investigative reporter suffering from retrograde amnesia struggles to piece together his past and determine how he is connected to Jessie's missing sister. Finally, a serial killer is on the loose in Sacramento and despite the bodies stacking up, the killer has left little behind that could reveal his/her identity. Needless to say, there was a lot going on and unfortunately, Jessie Cole wasn't the center of 2 out of 3 of those story lines.
In addition to each of those elements, the book reveals backstory about a former (and potential?) lover in Jessie's life, a niece in her custody for the last ten years, and an injured stray dog in need of a good home.
Each plot line is very interesting but could have been more so with fewer other elements splitting readers' attention. I mistakenly thought that 1 or 2 of those plots would be left open in order to weave future books together with a common thread. However, each was resolved by the end of Her Last Day and the book could be devoured as a standalone.
I was most captivated by the serial killer story line and can honestly say that the scenes involving the killer were horror movie material for sure! Be warned if you're afraid of spiders! :)
I can't wait to read more T.R. Ragan and think this book is worthy of attention from most thriller readers, but especially those who enjoy police procedural thrillers.
Nice start to a new series by TR Ragan. I look forward to the future adventures of Jessie Cole and friends.
This is a series launch about PI Jessie Cole. There is a lot going on in this book. Jessie is raising her niece Olivia, since her sister’s mysterious disappearance about 10 years ago. Her work hasn’t had much drama until her most recent case. While following an alleged stalker, he turns on Jessie and shoots. When Jessie returns fire the stalker is shot and in a coma. Jessie shortly discovers that she may be criminally liable for the shooting. Meanwhile, reporter Ben Morrison, an amnesiac from a violent car crash, feels compelled to track down what happened to Jessie’s sister. He senses that by doing so, his past may be unlocked. Lastly, Jessie’s police office boyfriend, Colin is on the track of an extremely vicious serial murderer, the Heartless Killer. These are the three strands for an author to juggle and weave into a whole. Ragan does an expert job of this resolving most of the mysteries but leaving the reader with a little bit of mystery to look forward to in the next title.
I am a huge T.R Ragan fan and she has definitely not disappointed in this latest book! Jessie Cole is in search for the truth of her missing sister, and discovers a lot more than she bargained for during her investigation. This is a truly gripping murder mystery with intricately woven story lines. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Received from NetGalley for my honest review.
Unlike others who received this ARC, I didn't enjoy it that much. I LIKED it, I didn't love it. I read, and loved, all of Ragan's Lizzy Gardner series but the first book of this series fell flat for me.
The good: the serial killer was sadistic. If you like that kind of thing (and I usually do) this might be for you. However that said, I didn't like the character. Of course he's a serial killer and your not SUPPOSED to like him, but in the serial killer books I read I'm usually awed/amazed by how twisted they are and while I don't like them, I find them smart and devious. This guy was an idiot, like I couldn't believe how he got away with it for so long. He just sat badly with me.
The bad: not bad per say but I just couldn't get into the characters. Jessie was ok for me, I didn't like Ben at all. Colin pretty much didn't matter. I didn't connect with any of them at all.
The story flopped all around between Jessie, Ben, the serial killer and a little Colin as well as flopping all around different times talking about Sophie's last day, the killer's childhood, Jessie's teen years..... it felt like she couldn't decide which story was most important so she touched on them all never letting us get into any of them.
Overall it was ok, but forgettable. I'll probably read the 2nd one cuz I'll see it's this author and forget I didn't love this one. But if I read this first, I probably will skip it.
I was hooked from page 1. This is one of the best books I have read this year, a master piece! I have read the Faith McCann series & some of the Lizzy Gardner series & this one tops all!! The plot of this book is complex & the multiple storylines were seamless. This was a thrilling, edge of your seat read!!
PI Jessie Cole takes mostly missing person cases. She is raising her niece, because her younger sister, Sophie, went missing ten years before. Trying to find her sister has become an obsession for Jessie.
Reporter Ben Morrison suffers from amnesia due to his own tragedy ten years before. When Ben sees Jessie on TV, it sparks something in him. He believes he may have known Jessie's sister.
The Heartless Killer, an elusive serial killer is on the loose & the victim count is rising.
Ben & Jessie team up to try & figure out what happened to Sophie, so that Jessie can close this chapter of her life. They end up entangled with this serial killer.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Utter garbage. Belongs in the dustbin. DId not finish this.
Very good book. I wanted more! It's one of those books where you wonder if it would be better to wait until the whole story is written instead, of reading one book and waiting for the next book to come out. But alas, I wait:) Lots of suspense and good fleshed out characters.
Her Last Day is book one of the Jesse Cole series by T.R.Ragan . I would like to thank Netgalley and publisher Thomas and Mercer for the advanced digital copy of Her Last Day . This is a gripping , fast paced thriller about a serial killer , PI Jessie Cole that's been searching for her missing sister for ten years and Ben Morrison, a journalist that has had amnesia for years . They are both complex characters. The story was very well written. I would highly recommend this book if you love a great thriller. I look forward to book two in the series .
This was my first book from this author. Her Last Day grips you right from the start, exactly what a prologue should do. Once I started, I couldn't put the book down. There is so much going on in this book. There are multiple story lines that all come together nicely in the end.
Jessie's younger sister, Sophie disappeared 10 years ago. Having to move on and raise her niece alone, Jessie is now a private investigator and on the case of a missing woman.
Ben is a crime reporter who was in a horrific car accident 10 years ago and does not remember anything before the accident. He is a happily married family man but his past life remains a mystery. After seeing a picture of Sophie on Cold Case TV, he gets a feeling that he used to know her.
Colin is a detective leading the task force for the Heartless Killer. A serial killer who tortures his prey. With no MO, this killer has been on the hunt for years.
The characters were well-developed and the story was well-written. It's fast paced and keeps you captivated. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of T.R. Ragan's "Her Last Day".
This is a gripping and engaging thriller, with a steady pace, great characters and intelligently written. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down, I was hooked from the beginning with that very powerful and fabulous opening scene.
I loved the complex well-developed characters. PI Jessie Cole and reporter Ben Morrison aren’t a romantic couple but they relate and work together just fine.
Ben is a fascinating wounded hero who wears his scars with serenity and despite that and his mysterious amnesia is a apparently well adapted family man.
I’m looking forward to the second book in the series so that we’ll get to know more about Ben, Jessie and the other characters.
