If not for bad luck, Alexa O’Brien might have no luck at all. Fleeing from an abusive fiancé, Alexa witnesses an execution involving Nicoli Zabat, Canada’s most wanted mobster. To make matters worse, she is shot in the back by one of the killers. When she wakes up in the hospital, she fears that her escape is over—until the police offer to put her in protective custody in exchange for her testimony. Meanwhile, Lt. Mike Delorme is fueled by revenge, which led to his own near-death experience with Zabat. When Mike is assigned to protect Alexa, he quickly learns that all is not as it seems. As the two stay on the move to survive, they inch closer to each other. Neither wants to find love again, but they might not have a say in the matter. This strong story from Matthews (The White Lily) has an interesting if at times slow-to-evolve plotline, but that only helps to build tension. The development of the protagonists’ relationship feels authentic.
Verdict A great choice for anyone who enjoys suspense with a love story. Readers who prefer a building of affection and emotional intimacy over explicit sex scenes will especially enjoy this.
No Good Deed is a story about a woman named Alexa, who escapes her abusive boyfriend and is put into witness protection after being witness to a horrible crime.
Enter Mike, a detective who is pulled from the hospital after being beaten by the mob to go and protect Alexa in the protection house.
Once Mike and Alexa decided they are willing to get along for the sake of "her" life they discover things are not as they seem and they flee in hopes of getting help from an old friend of Mikes.
The story line is a good one and it will keep you turning page after page. The story isn't too hard to figure out what will come next but overall it was worth the read.

One thing you'll definitely need to do if you intend to read this book is to suspend disbelief. While the plot was surprisingly fleshed-out and original for a romantic suspense novel, it was also very... uh... let's call it fanciful. A little too fanciful for my taste, to be honest.
Add to that the fact that the story dragged for quite a portion of the book, and there you have the reason why I failed to connect fully with it.
The main characters were cute though, and while I didn't feel the romance, I liked their (platonic) relationship a lot. An engaging writing style, quite a bit of action and some witty banter made this an enjoyable read.
BUT, there was one thing that kind of pissed me off. Mild spoiler alert:
So years back, Mike's early wife, Thea, and his unborn son were cold-bloodedly killed by that mob boss, Zabat. They'd been together for years and very much in love, and they couldn't have been happier about having a baby together.
Then now, there's Alexa, who he's met about what... 2 oder 3 weeks ago? If that. The first days, they didn't even like each other, while the remaining time was spent hiding and running for their lives. Not much time for romance, except for one kiss in a weak moment. Then Alexa gets abducted, but Mike knows she's alive and well. And then he goes and demolishes all the respect I have for him by thinking this:
Mike had thought losing Thea hurt, but that paled in comparison to never seeing the woman who held his heart again.
Ugh! Why, oh why?! Why authors seem to feel the need to belittle a character's former love is beyond me. So that their current relationship seems more.. what? Important? Substantial? Real? Even if it's only been 3 weeks tops? The only thing those authors accomplish is to take away the character's integrity and credibility. I truly, truly hate that.
Rant over.
Soooo... all in all, this was an entertaining, fun read. Certainly worth reading.
This was a nice and easygoing romantic suspense story. The female lead was a bit clueless but I liked that she wasn't whiny about her disability. The male lead wasn't anything special but I liked the turns this story took and liked the outcome, overall. It just seemed like the story became a bit stagnant in the middle and repetitive. I also didn't feel the chemistry between the lead characters, but the plot was interesting enough to keep me eager about how the ending would unfold. By all means, this was just an okay ready for me.
▲ Action packed? Umm, no. This story was not.
▲ The upside? This book is great for a reader looking to read a plot-driven story featuring mature characters. This book is also great for a reader who isn't disturbed by domestic abuse content.
Wow right from page 1, I was hooked...all the way through you are kept guessing, with clues thrown in as to who the character The Magician. If I was ever in trouble I would want Alan to be my friend...enjoyed this book immensely, and will be looking for others by this author.
Oh my! Canadian drama in time for Canada day. So this was great fun from start to finish- I loved the full and tense background of both the central characters, doled out gradually enough to keep you guessing. Likewise- I began to feel paranoid and jumpy - in time for a great ending.
