I really liked this book. I figured, after I read the blurb, that the nurse would help the hockey player get back on the ice and then it would be a lot of trust issues to follow. Boy was I wrong.
Luke was a very broken man, and for most of the book you can see that and understand why. Being injured at such a young age and being told that he would never be able to play hockey again threw him for a loop. He didn't believe it and kept getting more and more professional opinions, hoping to find one doctor that would release him to play. While out with his friends, he meets Bree. There is an instant attraction and they make plans to go back to his place at the end of the night. I was really happy with what Ms. Henry did at this time.
Bree is a nurse who has left her home to get away from her over-bearing family and 'slightly depressed' younger brother. When she meets Luke, she is drawn to him and can't figure out why she feels so safe with him. They agree to keep things casual because she is leaving in six months.
He wants more, but agrees to the parameters she sets. He believes he can change her mind. Things are effortless between them, but when a young man that they both have a connection to has a medical crisis, Bree steps in and becomes his comfort, even though he didn't realize he needed it at the time. As things progress, they both start feeling deeper emotions for each other, but don't acknowledge it.
When Luke realizes who her brother is and the connection he has to the family, as well as her family's wealth, he doesn't think he is good enough for her and pushes her away. He starts following in the footsteps of his mother (which is a heartbreaking plot line). Can her love for Luke pull him back from the brink? Will Luke allow her to help him? Can he forgive himself for the 'sins' of his past?
I loved everything about this book. Great job. I received an ARC, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.

I love hockey books, and I have read this author before, and I did enjoy her work, this one was ok, not great, but not to the point of a two star. There was some difficulty, there was anger issues that Luke had to deal with and you understood. Then there was Bree, and the connection that she ended up having with Luke, was crazy, and I am not talking about the sex, which they seemed to have all the time.

Although this is the fifth book in the Pilots Hockey series it can be read as a standalone so if there are readers that haven't read the previous stories, I think they'd be ok.
Breakaway is Brianna and Luke's story. Brianna is in Charlotte as a temporary nurse, this job seems like the perfect way to escape her family, mainly her parents who seem to expect her to miraculously help her brother after he suffered an injury playing hockey that has now ended his career.
Meanwhile Luke is volunteering at the same hospital Bri is working on, he's pretty much trying to find what his place is now, after an injury sidelined him from hockey. Of course being on the same place, these two meet and the chemistry between them is instantaneous. What starts as something simple starts to get a bit more complicated, because as they start to know each other the feelings become stronger, truths are revealed and they will have to face their demons and decide if being together is worth fighting for.
I think Breakaway is a nice addition to the series. I did have a bit trouble with Brianna because I found Luke was more forthcoming, willing to open himself up to Brianna while she held back so it was a bit frustrating at times but overall is a great story, very emotional but also sweet. Can't miss if if you're read the other Pilot Hockey books but also recommendable if you haven't :)

Typically hockey books, or any book about athletes, have the guy as an alpha playboy. Here we have a bit of role reversal. Puck bunnies are easy for hockey but Luke isn't about the fake attention long term. A random meet during a pub crawl has Bree and Luke hooking up. Neither has expectations beyond one night but nothing turned into something and now they are dating. Bree is all about keeping it easy without connecting but Luke wants it all. Their relationship was fun and light, honest and free until an incident from his past comes back. The content was pretty heavy at times and seemed to take a bit to dredge through but it made for a truly interesting book. The only segue to the series would be the guys he meets with at the crawl, otherwise this is a complete standalone. I received an early copy from Netgalley and wrote this review voluntarily.

Breakaway is book 5 in the Pilots Hockey Series and this is Luke Daniels and Brianna Collins story.
Brianna has taken a temporary job as a pediatric nurse in Charlotte NC as she needs to escape her parents who seem to think she is the only one able to fix her brother who was retired from hockey through injury, she has had enough of being the person who is expected to perform miracles.
Luke Daniels has been working in the offices of the Charlotte Aviators NHL Team whilst trying to recover from an injury that sidelined him nearly a year ago, he desperately wants his place back on the team. Luke and Charlotte meet on the pediatric Ward where she is working and he is volunteering, what they soon realise is this isn't there first meeting......
I really enjoyed this book and I think it's a great edition to the series, Its a love story with a few obstacles put in the way, it's Luke's and Brianna's journey and it's hot!
Hope we get more from the Charlotte Aviators.

3.5 Stars
I liked the book enough but wanted a but more.
Th pair had crazy chemistry in the bedroom but only was hoping to feel more of a connection outside the bedroom. Despite their age and that they are already in their chosen career paths, they both seemed immature.
Also I hate to say I was looking for a little more drama or storyline. The drama and the storyline that I was hoping for came at the end of the book.
I enjoyed the last few chapters and the epilogue the most.

First time reading a Sophia Henry book. I'm an avid sports romance reader and love series. I'll look forward to going back to read the others in this one.
This is a super fun and light read. Luke is a GREAT character. He could have turned bitter and sour after his injury, instead, he turned into something positive for himself and his team. I love how he wasn't afraid to pursue Bree even after she said "just for fun." Bree is a great character too. Likable and lovable. She's hard-working and no nonsense. It was great to see how she broke from her parents' mold to carve her own way.
Ms. Henry writes with fun and flair. A few times, it seemed a little jumpy, but overall a super fun and sexy read!

The characters were just far too immature for me. They act like they just turned 21 rather than in their mid 20s with strong careers. I felt no connection between Bree and Luke even though Bree had been introduced in the prior book in this series.

I think think one was a case of "it's not you, it's me". Whilst I have really enjoyed the other books in this series, I struggled to with this one. And I hate that, as I am a real sucker for hockey books.
And I think the main reason was our leading lady Bree. I just couldn't connect with her, I didn't particularly like her, and I found her quite 2 dimensional and felt no character growth in her.
Ugh. I felt that even at the end of the book, we were still in the first stages of their story. And speaknig of, I felt that the end was rushed. Everything that had been brewing through the book was just wrapped up with a nice little bow in about 10 pages.
But like I said, this could all just be me.
Me feelings on this book are an anomaly in the series for me, as I really have enjoyed the others.
I hope if there are more that I will get back to enjoying them.

I received a copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Brianna is a nurse, specializing in Pediatric Oncology. She has a lot if pressures at home. Her younger brother had great promise as a hockey player but is sidelined due to concussions. He will never be cleared to play and her family will not accept this so they have heavily involved her in their fight to have him play again. She has had enough, she wants her own life. She joins an agency that employs nurse's across the country on a temporary basis.
Luke is....was a hockey player. He took a really bad hit, had to have surgery and can no longer play hockey. His team has given him another job but he still yearns to play hockey.
Luke and Brianna meet as they go with friends to a...well basically a bar hop session. There is immediate attraction there and Brianna decides to give in to a one night stand.
They see one another again when it ends up that Luke volunteers once a week on the floor she works on at the hospital. This re-ignites their physical relationship but will happen to the emotional part? Will it grow or stifle?
I really liked this story. Both characters have a lot of personal issues to deal with before they can make any commitments toward one another...or I should say if they decide to form a commitment.
There a many hard times ahead for both. There are some tough decisions they both need to make.
In a way, both characters have to establish a life for themselves, Brianna after the craziness of her family and Luke, after devastating news that changed his life. Can they re-establish their lives and be together?

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC from Netgalley.
I wanted to like this book. I truly did. However, I found it juvenile and my focus just went out the window. I'm not saying it was a bad book. It wasn't. It just wasn't my cup of tea. Many others may find this to be a wonderful read and well worth their time reading it. Unfortunately, I did not.

Luke has it all, he's young attractive and a hot shot hockey player until one hit ends it. Bree has been through hell with her brother and needs a break.. She is a pediatric oncology nurse so she takes an assignment in NC far away from CA to give herself that.
When Bree meets Luke she is just looking to have some fun. Over time the feelings start to develop but when the demons and past creep up on them both can they make this work or will it be the end?
I loved this storyline Sophia touched on very compelling issues. Just was missing a few things for me .

Brianna and Luke have a chance meeting shortly after she moves to Charlotte as a visiting nurse to get away from her family in California. Luke is still trying to come to grips with his hockey career being over and still holds out hope to play again. Both of them have baggage a mile wide and each uses sex with the other as a diversion in the beginning.
Luke was more forthcoming to wanting a relationship and Brianna kind of stonewalled him several times. She was kind of hard for me to figure out. She showed compassion at work but seemed to have a hard shell in her personal life. She didn't cut Luke much slack at all. She wanted them to be just "fun" friends but then would delve into personal questions that had no business in a casual relationship. She wanted to pick at his life and dig deep but didn't have the courtesy at times to open herself up. It struck me as odd and was off-putting for me at points. You don't ask someone to bear part of their soul, then feign nonchalance when asked about your life, and then use a trip to a sex store as a way to show you just want things to be easy and free between you two.
Overall a decent read. I don't want to give away what happens in this book since some scenes are difficult to divulge without giving away too much. There are some sad scenes, drug use, and drinking in excess at points. Some people may find some scenes in this book too much to handle at points. The happy-go-lucky moments were few and far between. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest opinion.

I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review and well, that's easy, I loved it!
This is a fun, flirty, sexy and steamy love story about two people who are at a point in their lives where they are not exactly sure what is next but through luck or fate somehow find a way to each other.
After a career ending injury, Luke Daniels isn't quite sure what his worth is. He is struggling to find where he belongs now that at age 26 his hockey career is over. He lands a job with his team as a player developer and continues his volunteer work at the Children's Hospital.
Bree is on a traveling nursing assignment at the Charlotte Children's Hospital after feeling like she needed a fresh start away from her smothering family in California.
Luke and Bree meet and instantly hit it off. They have some sizzling chemistry. At first they plan on just hooking up but then as they really get to know each other real feelings enter the equation. As they both try and breakaway from their former lives, there is just no way they can breakaway from their new feelings for each other.
As their feelings grow deeper something from the past involving her brother Mason threatens their relationship. Can they work through it and come out the other side better for it?
This is a must read in this wonderful series from Sophia Henry!

This was a sweet, sexy, fun read. It was entertaining and the story flowed well. I enjoyed Luke and Bree a lot. They fit together nicely. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I thought this book was the classic harlequin, but instead of talking about busty women its focus was on the guys attributes. It made me feel so uncomfortable that I could not finish reading this book. I am writing this review, however there are other people who may like this type of book so I do not plan on sharing this review on goodreads like usual. It would be nice if this book had some sort of plot, but I could not find one. The objective of this book seemed to be for the girl to have sex, no matter what the cost. I don't recommend this book at all.

But like I said, this could all just be me.
Me feelings on this book are an anomaly in the series for me, as I really have enjoyed the others.

Breakaway is based around the Charollette Aviators hockey team. Luke, one of the star players, meets up with a wonderful woman, Bree, who he has a one night stand with. He wants to see her again but she's new in town and for one night wants to let loose from her uptight and overbearing past.
Bree thought she'd never see Luke again until he strolls onto the children's oncology ward at the hospital she works at. He visits kids there which of course impresses Bree. Still, she's hesitant to get involved in a relationship.
Meanwhile Luke is facing a devastating blow in his life and despite having to face what could be his worst nightmare he still wants to see Bree.
As Bree and Luke begin to fall for each other we learn about each of their backgrounds. About their family and friends.
Once things seem to be going really well two different obstacles face Luke and Bree.
This book is a good love story with a strong heroine and a wonderful hero. And lets not forget the steamy scenes.
This book is a little deeper than some sports romance books. I still highly recommend it for those who like sports romance books.
I voluntarily reviewed this book.

This book is a standalone in a series; I have read them all and I think this is my favorite. Luke and Bree are both very likable characters. Their interactions were fun, romantic, and realistic. Outside of the love story, the issues of family, life changes, and the hospital scenes made the story interesting and well-developed. Some of the characters from the other books in the series make an appearance, but most of the secondary characters were new and were enjoyable characters.
Though this book is part of a hockey series, hockey is a very minor part of the book. This is a wonderful story about realistic people facing circumstances and building a relationship based on supporting each other. I highly recommend the book.

I really enjoyed this story of Bree and Luke! They were wonderful characters and I really liked both of them. It was great to see them get to know one another and then develop a relationship. The backdrop of the Charlotte Aviators was a good one, and I enjoyed this aspect of the story.
The storyline was interesting and I found this one quick and easy to read. I thought the romancing was touching, yet there was plenty of chemistry between the main characters. Another really good one from this author!
