Lovely book with huge amount of textile information. Great information on everything you need to know within the textile business. Great coffee table book and one I will look through again.
This is an absolutely beautiful book, whilst a weaver, I have not seen this fan reed technique before. The designs that are achieved are very different, modern and very beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who weaves or has an interest in weaving. The book is really well written, and extremely interesting to read and well explained
It was new to me to read about Ondule textile........ The uniqueness of these fabrics lies in the pattern of the weaving ........ wonderful book......
A long awaited publication - being the first to explore the history, use and design of Ondule weaving reeds, otherwise know as Fan reeds.
Ondule is a French word meaning undulation. Unlike normal weaving reeds wherein the wires are parallel to one another to create the dents, the wires in a Ondule reed are grouped into fan shaped sections. The reed is raised or lowered in the loom to create the undulations in the warp threads within the cloth. These reeds have been used for over a century by Japanese weavers.
Within this book, five comtemporary Ondule reed weavers explain their interest in these reeds and how they modified their looms to accommodate them.
The book is illustrated throughout with beautiful coloured photographs of Ondule woven fabrics and instructions are given to reproduce some of the examples.
For the intrepid weaver, details are provided on how to make your own Ondule reed.
A must have for the more adventurous weaver or anyone interested in the creation of unusual, beautiful textiles.
Beautiful book discussing Ondule' Textiles with wonderful color photographs of the art of weaving, complete with equipment, handwovens, and full of historical, anecdotal, and some technical information that will serve the textile artists, weavers in particular, quite well. Academic, but not so much as to put one off, as the art of weaving is intricate, and beckons one to look further into the book, the art of handweaving, and inspires the artist reader to search for a loom and be creative. It is amazing to see something as simple as a reed, a tool in a weaver's arsenal, that undulates can create such simply unique and thought provoking masterpieces. This is a comprehensive look at Ondule Textiles throughout history, their innovation and construction and their place in contemporary textile design. It also explores the author artist's work in creating her own Ondule' inspired weavings, both the technical and what inspired her. Stunning!
