I wasn't sure what to expect as I hadn't read Parker before. It took me a while to get into the book, kept putting it down, but slowly I was sucked into it. Roland, a former Marine and now PI, takes a case that quickly becomes complicated. He realizes that he's been lied to about the person he's supposed to find and starts digging deeper.
The Room of White Fire is not a happy story. War, torture, more torture, the death of a child, dead spouses, romance, unhappy families. It's not a light read, and the writing could have been tighter, but it was interesting. I liked Roland and his crew of Irregulars, I'd like to read more about them. As for the missing man, Clay, I felt for him. Some of the things he did were truly awful and that he did them in the name of serving his country does not, to my mind, make them any better. Yet, he too was a victim, not only of the war but what happened when he came home. He did try to make right what happened, and accepted responsibility for his actions.
The Room of White Fire can be read as a mystery or you can go deeper and think about the topics it brings up concerning war, patriotism, what's acceptable in war and what's not, torture's place and where the limits are or should be. The mystery of where Clay is doesn't take up too much of the story but actually catching him and what to do about the information is the bulk of the story. There are various people behind the scenes and there was an element of mystery as to who was responsible for what.
Not a great story but interesting.
This is the first novel I read from TJ Parker. There is a looot going on in this book. If you like really good action movies like Die Hard, Taken and sort of those, then you will like this one because this novel is the book version of a good action movie! Is packed with a lot of action. I enjoyed the characters, it made me think of the tv show Bones. You have the investigator and the atractive doctor... and all the good stuff.
The PTSD usually triggers in me a lot of feelings because I’m an army wife and I know how hard it is. But here the author brilliantly turned that into a tense and gripping story that I really enjoyed!
