Chaska and his sister Winona rescue a trapped Naomi while out walking their wolf (yes, a wolf) in the woods. Naomi fell into an abandoned mine and broke her leg while fleeing two escaped convicts who would have probably raped and killed her.
The injuries Naomi incurred from her escape could financially cripple the talented but poor jewelry artist, but the close knit community of the small Colorado town and the generosity of Chaska and his sister help get her back on her feet. Struggling to escape the ghosts of her past, she finds place, love, and family with Chaska.
It was definitely nice to read a romance featuring Native American leads, and in a way that was nicely handled, including accurate depictions of the hardships and struggles Native Americans still face today.
My main dislikes were just my personal taste. I found the story ARC to be very "inspirational" but the sex to be very explicit which was a bit jarring. Also, the characters had a definite case of insta-love, but were still a cute couple. They were just both so nice and perfect, it was just a bit too twee for me. Also, there were a ton of technical details about mountain climbing that I skimmed over, because eh.
I am a big fan of this series and have enjoyed all the books so far. I really enjoyed this one as well. Both Naomi and Chaska were wonderful characters that fit well together. I also really enjoyed the information about the rescues, the native american culture and the animals and landscape of Colorado. There was a small mystery and just enough action. The romance was sweet and I enjoyed watching Naomi grow throughout the book. Chaska was a wonderful hero and not only was he sweet, hot and smart but he loved to take care of people. As always the secondary characters were interesting and added to the book.
Pamela Clare has once again given us an emotionally charged intense read with Tempting Fate. It is part of the Colorado High Country Series but read v well on its own. The past being resolved in a unique fashion along with the Native American culture that is part of the story makes this one of Pamela Clare’s best romance stories.
For a while I didn’t see anything new by Ms. Clare then the Colorado High Country Series came out. This is a marvelous series with Tempting Fate to be an excellent addition to the series. I loved the mystical element, the strong characters especially Chaska and the attention grabbing and holding story-line. This author has come back to the front my reading list better than ever. You go girl, keep on writing!
Anytime I pick up a book by Pamela Clare, I know I'm going to have a tough time putting the book down until I finish. This book is no different! While technically this is the fourth book in the series, it can easily stand on its own. After rescuing Naomi from certain death, Chaska and his sister Win take Naomi into their home to recuperate from her injuries. While there is a certain amount of matchmaking on Win's behalf, it is easy to see that there is a definite attraction between Chaska and Naomi.
One of my favorite parts of this book were the elements of Lakota culture that were interspersed in the book. And if you read the author's note at the end, these facts come from the extensive time she has gotten from her work as a reporter covering important issues to the Lakota nation. So aside from being a very enjoyable contemporary romance, I feel like I actually learned something. How often does that happen in a romance novel!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
Naomi fled the abusive cult-like nightmare of her childhood when she was sixteen with the only possession she had of her birth family, a medicine wheel. She learned how to rely on just one person - herself. Her resourcefulness became handy and keeps her alive when she is taken hostage by two escaped convicts that force her to cook for them and threaten to rape her. She manages to escape but ends up shot and falls down a ravene only to end up with a broken tibia, that was when Chaska Belcourt finds her with the help of his wolf, Shota.
Chaska grew up on a Lakota reservation, the son of the Sun Dance chief. He left that life behind when he discovered his father was disgracing the Sun Dance ritual and the desire to become an engineer. Chaska followed his dreams and works for an aerospace firm creating products for NASA and a member for the elite Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team in Scarlet Springs. He doesn't believe that fate led him to her at first, like his sister, but eventually he does come to see that he was.
After being abandoned beside a dumpster and almost dying, Naomi believes that her parents didn't want her. With the help of the medicine wheel, Chaska, and his grandfather they soon discover that her father is Lakota and didn't know she existed and her mother loved her but was forced to give her up by her parents as a teenager. She finally has a family, a life, and the man of her dreams.
As usual Pamela Clare brings two fictional characters to life, a town full of people that care for one another and come together to help someone in need. Scarlet Springs is the town that I wish really existed. It's always nice to see characters from previous books, and the Rescue team at work at Tommyknockers. I always look forward to the books of this series, and I always know that I'm going to need tissues, but I always love the stories. I was not looking forward to the book ending but I couldn't put it down. This was one enjoyable book and I look forward to reading the next book of the series.
Received ARC in exchange for honest voluntary review from NetGalley
This book was good, although it didn't grab me the way Clare's other books did. It was more about soul searching and finding the roots of an adopted girl/woman. Most of the suspense was in the beginning but all in all, it was a good book. I read all of Clare's books and this won't stop me from reading another!
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
Naomi did not know that her vacation in Colorado was going to changed her life.
While camping, she was attacked, but she was able to escape.
She was rescued by Chaska, his sister Win, and the wolf Shota.
They gave her a place to stay until she got better.
It wasn't just her physical wounds that needed healing,
Abandoned as a baby, she never knew who her father or mother were.
Because of the medicine wheel she always carried, her past start to unveiled
Piece by piece, her past is presented to her.
She does not know what to think.
Let's not forget Chaska.
Dark + handsome, a total Alpha male.
The first time he saw Naomi, he already could see her beauty
As he got to know her, he saw that she was beautiful not only on the outside, but on the inside as well.
They feel in love gradually, but inevitably.
It was a really sweet love story.
I feel in love w/ Chaska + Naomi,
They felt so perfect for each other.
The way Chaska asked Naomi's father for her hand in marriage. Hilarious!
Totally buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
Hmmm, this just hit too many of my hot spots. To be honest I was in two minds about requesting the book because I had my suspicions that it wasn't for me, but I do like this series so I requested it anyway.
This series follows the members of the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue Team based out of Scarlet Springs Colorado. The small town is that mythical creature, a rural small town with enlightened beliefs and an interest in new age/ supernatural occurrences. The town has a local hermit called Bear who has the mind of a child and can spout bible verses by heart, they feed and look after Bear without judgement.
Chaska Belcourt is from the Oglala Lakota nation. A genius, he designs improvements to climbing gear for fun and doesn't profit from his inventions. Whilst hiking with his sister Winona and her wolf Shota he makes flippant comment about the Creator finding him a wife/ soul mate and the next moment Shota runs off. Chaska, Shota and Winona find an injured woman, close to death called Naomi Archer.
Naomi has had a difficult life but has finally started to find her feet, she goes camping in Roosevelt National Forest to find inspiration for her blossoming nature-inspired jewellery business when she is accosted by two runaway prisoners.
As she recovers from her injuries Naomi spends time with Chaska and Winona, unable to drive with a cast on her leg. She and Chaska feel drawn to each other but her past has made her wary of men. Also, despite her appearance, she has no knowledge of her family or heritage and she has been rejected by other Native Americans because she isn't a registered member of any Indian nation.
Why didn't I love this book as much as the others? First, the cover picture - just, no.
Second, I felt that the whoo whoo factor was dialled up to 100 in this book. What with the new age jewellery, the native american rituals, the acceptance of a homeless man-child, the existence of a wild life sanctuary funded by the town, the idea that a higher being brought Chaska and Naomi together it was all just a bit too much. Also, minor spoiler, a small town regularly holds fund-raiser evenings for good causes (like Naomi's medical bills) and manages to raise a vast amount of money - given the size of the town it would be equivalent to probably $200 per person in the entire town - or maybe $3,000 per person who attended the fund-raiser! I just felt it was too right on, too hippy dippy, just too too!
Third, OMG did Chaska and Naomi have sex, all the flippin' time. I could feel my eyes rolling because they were doin' it again!
All of which is a pity because I actually liked the underlying story, I liked Naomi and Chaska but I felt the native American aspects didn't always feel very natural, not caricatures but too much education and not enough observation.
I still love Pamela Clare and will happily request more books in this series , but this one just wasn't for me.
I've enjoyed Pamela's books for many years and with every story she tells, the way you are drawn into the book she so easily does. And with Tempting Fate, it was exactly that. Chaska, so caring and loving but so protective and pure alpha was exactly what I was expecting from his character. And Naomi, oh I just wanted to hug her. Finding Chaska was her destiny and her fate. Together they were beautiful and another great addition to this series!
Tempting Fate, the 4th book in the Colorado High Country Series, was great. I have been wanting Chaska's book since book 1. If you go back to my reviews of the other 3 books in this series you will see I was like I can't wait for Chaska's book in each one lol. To say I was excited to see Tempting Fate on Netgalley would be an understatement. I was over the moon. And that cover.... OMFG that cover is drool worthy. That cover deserves a standing ovation!
Chaska was everything I wanted and more. He was sexy, smart, and brave. He helped others, was respectful, and was just all around panty melting yummy. He has a calmness to him that was very peaceful, but he could be fun too. I loved how much family and helping others meant to him. Chaska was just an all around great guy. I fell in love with Chaska in book 1 and my love for him grew with every book. Naomi was a fighter. She had a hard life and no one to support her but she fought to make a living for herself. I thought it was so cool that Naomi made jewelry. Naomi had some major insecurities about her self worth, her sexuality, and her talent. Naomi was sweet, talented and honest. She had a love and respect for wild life. From start to finish I felt Naomi really grew in this book.
Chaska and Naomi were very sweet together. They had a lot in common and got along well. I loved that Chaska showed Naomi that it was okay to enjoy sex. That sex with someone that respects and cares for you can be a beautiful thing. I loved the build up of their relationship. I had a good laugh at the jalapeno incident. Chaska was so sweet and supportive of Naomi. Chaska wasn't the only one that was supportive of Naomi, the whole town came together to support her. I loved the friendship between Naomi and Winona. I would love for Winona to get a book.....hint....hint! I loved the Lakota aspect of this book. Being part Cherokee I love reading about the Native American heritage in any book. Especially when it's shown in a well researched and respectful way. I also loved getting to see the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue gang and the past couples again. The HEA was awesome and very sweet. I would like to know if Naomi and her mom are going to have a relationship in the future though. Tempting Fate was a sweet, easygoing and entertaining read. I enjoyed every minute of it and I can't wait for the next book!
I really liked this story. It had a very interesting plot. Good writing and story building.
I loved "Tempting Fate" by Pamela Clare. Swoon-worthy, intelligent male lead and a smart female with the wits to match him. Aah, this one is a good one!
Naomi was abandoned as a baby and raised by an awful couple, neglected and abused and left to feel less than worthy. She was able to run away at 16 and become a jewelry designer. On a week-long vacation in Colorado, she is attacked by two prison escapees who chase her through the woods, shoot her and leave her for dead.
Chaska, a member of the Lakota tribe, rocket scientist, member of a volunteer rescue climbing team - can it get any better, is out for a walk with his sister and her wolf (yeah, wolf) and stumbles upon Naomi. He calls for her rescue, she is pretty badly hurt, and gets her out of there.
Naomi has nowhere to stay after she is injured and is worried about the cost of her hospital stay and surgeries, Chaska's sister invites her to stay with them and recuperate and she takes her up on the offer. That's when the sparks really start to fly. Naomi and Chaska are pretty instantly hot for each other - but they are friends as well and actually like each other. So refreshing to read about a couple who want to be together and are willing to work and talk through their feelings in order to be together.
Hot, hot lovin' in this book. All of the situations Chaska and Naomi face may be tied up a little too easily, but this is romance - suspend your beliefs for a bit and be happy for the couple. This is the first book I've read by Pamela Clare, definitely will look forward to reading more!
WOW! The intro into this book is a page turner. I couldn't put it down once I started, but that how all the books by Pamela Clare are for me. This is the fourth book in her series Colorado High Country. I found this one to be one of my favorites so far in this series. This book had me in tears, laughing, gasping, angry, and scared. I felt like I knew the characters and even though I was reading I thought the author did such a great job that in my inner mind I was watching it like a movie. I was wondering how she was going to write Chaska’s story and disappointed I was not! Naomi’s background story was so heart breaking and yet her reward for not giving up is the best reward one could ask for. She is a strong loving person and I admire her for her strength and willingness to be a good person. I loved to way Chaska and Naomi became close and the way he rescued her in more ways than one. You have to read this for yourself to see what I mean.
***I voluntarily reviewed this ARC for an honest review via NetGalley, this is my honest opinion and has not been influenced by the author, Publishers or NetGalley in anyway.***
**I received a copy of Tempting Date from Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**
Tempting Fate by Pamela Clare is such a sweet and poignant book it will have your heart from the very first page to the last one. It's the fourth book in her Colorado High Country series and I hope there are many more to come as I'd love for Winona to have her own book. I've read several of Ms. Clare's I-Team stories and now will need to read the rest of the books in this series to catch up with the High Rescue Squad.
Naomi Archer's story is a touching one as she was abandoned as an infant with only her Medicine wheel necklace. She was adopted and raised by a religious couple who believed the girls should be married young to the much older men of their sect. She escapes at 16 works hard and is out camping near Scarlet Springs. She's worked hard as a waitress to bring her dream of a store to display her Silversmiths art. But when she's attacked by two escaped convicts who later shoot her, but she escapes but breaks her leg. She finds a cave and hides until the next morning when Shota a wolf finds a her. Chaska and his sister rescue her and take her in to recover. What follows is a journey of discovery for Naomi of who she is Lakota, finding her father and falling in love with Chaska. I love how the bride's price to her father was portrayed in the book it was awesome.
Chaska Belcourt is proud of his Oglala Lakota heritage and he's also designs propulsion systems for satellites. He's also a member of the high rescue team as well as a climber. But when he tells his sister that the Creator would send a sign that his half side little does he know that it will be Naomi and that he would help her find her father Doug Otter Tail. The attention to detail in this story is well researched and Ms. Clare's own information at the end tells her own journey to make sure each story she writes is accurate for the Lakota people.
The town of Scarlet Springs rally around Naomi and welcome her long journey to find herself, her beautiful art and of course Chaska. I'd gladly give Tempting Fate 10 stars if I could.
Naomi traveled to Colorado to camp out, enjoy nature, and sketch wildlife for her jewelry making designs. When she is attacked by two escaped convicts her life changed forever. Not only is she saved by a Navajo named Chaska but through him she finds out about her history since she was abandoned as a baby. I loved the sexy scenes between Naomi and Chaska as he treats Naomi as a special gem. Very good book especially if you are interested in Navajo culture.
Such a powerful story, I couldn't put it down. Chaska is part of the search and rescue team and true to his Lakota heritage. Naomi is on vacation when a turn of events sends her into Chaska's arms. I really enjoyed their discovery of love while surrounded by drama, murder and mystery. The author handled the background of Native Americans with dignity and respect and once I read the author's story after the Epilogue I understood why.
The story well well written and captivating. I enjoyed the characters in this small town and the feeling of family.
I was graciously provided a copy of this novel by net-galley for an honest review.
This is my 2nd novel by Pamela Clare and she's found her way to my auto-but list. The first two books of this series are already sitting on my kindle waiting for consumption. Clare is such an amazing storyteller who sucks you in, and you find yourself invested in her characters.
I don't even know where to begin when reviewing Naomi and Chaska's amazing story, a story laced with Native American culture.
Chaska tempts fate when he tempts the creator to place his other half in his path. Immediately, he is led to Naomi, unconscious in a ravine after fleeing two convicts who approached and made plans for her at her campsite.
Clare has a way with words and pacing, painting a beautiful story full of feels and passion.
A great read.
I loved this book! This is an awesome series and I really enjoyed Chaska’s story. I love all the characters in Scarlett Springs and it was great to see the Team at it again. Naomi was an excellent match for Chaska, she was strong and independent but so in need of love and roots. I loved watching Chaska fall hard and fast for her, no matter how hard he tried to deny it was happening. I also loved getting to see more of Chaska’s sister Winona and I have to hope we’ll see her happy ending soon. This book is fine as a stand alone but this entire series is excellent and I recommend them all. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this read. The story is fun, emotional and entertaining. I really liked Chaska and Naomi, they have an amazing connection. Naomi has been through a lot in her life and Chaska is such an amazing person. You are definitely cheering for them throughout. A good read!
I have enjoyed this series so much! The author gives us so much detail about search and rescue, it gets the adrenaline pumping as you read. What puts this book over the top is the great insight into the Native population. Culture, stereotypes, racism, spiritual beliefs---the author brings it all. Please read through to the author comments at the end of the book as well. Absolutely on point.. What a brilliant representation and introduction for many readers to the Lakota people.
On top of all that culture and history, we also get a sweet romance. Chaska rescues Naomi and what follows is the slow build of a wonderful friendship and a steamy romance. Great secondary characters as always. The residents of this small mountain town are all interesting. Great to catch up on some of the previous couples in the series. Just a delightful read all around. Looking forward to more!
