A charming and delightful cozy mystery. Knit shop owner doesn't knit, but she is clever and solves mysteries. Interesting characters with lots of potential for future adventures. The preponderance of active older people in the story adds to the charm.
Josie Blair who owns Miss Marple Knits as well as the store and apartment next to it, is excited when her new business neighbor and tenant starts moving in. Lyndon and his business partner, Harry (still out on a buying trip), are going to run Nutmeg Antiques and Curiosities. Lyndon also rented the apartment upstairs for himself. But there's a huge problem when Lyndon ends up dead, stabbed with an antique sheep shears and Josie comes into the shop to find Harry standing over the body. So of course poor Harry gets hauled off to jail but hasn't been charged yet. Josie feels compelled to investigate and she's lucky that Sharla, the lead officer on the case, is also a good friend so there isn't any butting of heads. Lyndon's niece Taylor and a whole cast of extras show up to toss in all the appropriate twists and fun turns that make this a really well-written mystery.
This was a very fun mystery to read because I felt like all the characters, even though I have not yet read the first book, seemed like family. The author does a good job of explaining who is who so that this could be read as a stand-alone. But I do want to read the first one and see a little of the history of Josie coming to Dorset Falls. I always enjoy cozies that have a crafting element. I don't knit (like Josie) but I wouldn't be opposed to learning.
All the twists, turns and back stories along with a fun side mention that talks about Josie's best friend Lorna and her dream of having her own cafe, add to the intrigue. One hint, if you think the story is done, well think again! Oh and the epilogue is epic--very cute and trying to make you think one thing when it's really something else. I caught on to the something else fairly quickly but I didn't guess the perp of the story, oh well. I'll definitely be reading the first one in this series and any others that come out. I want to visit Dorset Falls again!
I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing.
Oh the joy of a cozy with knitting! I had not read the first book in the series but was able to leap right in because Hartwell has created a delightful character in Josie and a nice atmosphere (well, except for the murder!) in Dorset Falls. Josie is the classic cozy heroine - she's smart, intrepid, and a little smart aleck at times. This is less about knitting than it is about solving the murder of her neighbor Lyndon. She's sure that his partner Harry didn't do it and sets out to prove it. The mystery is just complex enough to keep you guessing but not gruesome or dark, which made this a nice read that keeps your mind going. Thanks to Netgalley for the ArC- I'm looking forward to the next in the series!
As someone who loves mysteries and knitting, the name of Josie Blair's shop, Miss Marple Knits, makes me smile. It is simply brilliant. By this second book, Sadie Hartwell's Tangled Web cozy series is shaping up nicely. Josie is funny and smart-- so smart that I can't quite figure out why she's having so much trouble learning how to knit. After all, if I can figure out those instructional videos on YouTube....
Anyway, there's a solid cast of secondary characters in A Knit Before Dying, and several of them have become Josie's good friends. For comic relief, there are two cantankerous, mule-headed old men in town-- one of them Josie's Uncle Eb-- who have been feuding with each other practically since they were in diapers. Now we get some background on the feud, and although the start to the feud is much as I'd guessed, it still made me scratch my head. Some of the things those two get up to do make for good comic relief, however!
There's also a complex mystery to enjoy, so if you're in the mood for good characters, crafting, a bit of humor, and a murder to solve, curl up with Sadie Hartwell's Tangled Web series. The first one is Yarned and Dangerous.
The second book in Sadie Hartwell's series is as good as the first!! Even though Josie still doesn't know how to knit, she's totally believable as the owner of a yarn shop. I read every mystery I can find dealing with needlework or knitting, and this is one of the best series in that genre. As I read this book, I realized Josie is a younger, 21st century version of Monica Ferris's Betsy Devonshire. Josie and her fellow knitters have exciting adventures even though they live in a small, struggling town. Her interactions with her uncle add humor while her handsome neighbor adds a touch of romance. I look forward to seeing what happens next!!!! Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing early access to this title!
This book is the second in the tangled web mystery series in this one Josie has rented out the other building next door to her shop to a new business of selling antiques. Before long Lyndon is found dead and Harry is standing over the body of his partner. Who killed Lyndon and why?
Add to that mystery is multiple of others like the disappearance of Bea Ryder who disappeared a long time ago and Helen her best friend would just feel so much better knowing what happened to her friend. Had someone murdered her or did she move somewhere else without telling anyone?
Then the local fighting between Eb and Roy gets to an all time high, when Roy is going crazy and acting odd around town. Eb seems to be spending an awful lot of time in his workshop is be really working on art or back to his fighting with Roy?
This series is so much fun to read, to go back to Dorset Falls and see what everyone is up to. And this book did not disappoint in the slightest. It pulls you in and you find yourself traveling along with Josie and her friends as they work, enjoy each others company and solve a mystery or two! Can't wait to see what is next!
This is probably my favorite knitting cozy series. It has good characters with distinct personalities and a decent mystery to other life plot ratio. It was a quick weekend read and great stress reliever.
A brilliant read. New to me I have not read any books by this author before.
This is the second book in this series. As I always read books in order I will go back and read the first.. I would like to know as to why Josie Blair came to Dorset falls. Book two gives you insite but not all of her history and story , but that's my choice.
I enjoyed getting to know josie and the gang her shop and of course knitting(which drew me to the book) .
I wish uncle Eb would be a bit kinder to josie as josie is living with her uncle and helping out . But then I don't know the history as to why she is there..
A lot of twists and turns throughout the book, I was suprised who the killer was and all made sense and came together in the end.
A very enjoyable read and I will look forward to her next book.
Thankyou net galley for giving me a chance to read and review this book .
I was really looking forward to reading this book as I love knitting and mysteries. It was a good read, but not a great one. The plot was too obviously set up and when the main character even finds love, it was a bit too predictable. With that said, I still enjoyed it as a quick summer read.
A Knit Before Dying is the second book in the A Tangled Web Mystery series.
An interesting and enjoyable follow-up to the first book, Yarned And Dangerous.
It’s only been a couple months since Uncle Eban made Josie the proud owner of the yarn shop, Miss Marple Knits, and building, but also the building next door. Today, her first tenant, Lyndon Bailey is moving his antique business in. A couple days later Josie heads over to pay Lyndon for some doilies that he had gotten at the sale of Bea Ryder’s estate and that Josie thought she could repurpose. When she enters the antique store she finds a man standing over the body Bailey, he had been stabbed with an antique tool from the store. The man introduces himself as Harry Oglethorpe, the partner with Bailey and claims to have been on a buying trip for the store. Then Kai Norton shows claiming that he had an agreement with Bailey to produce a reality TV show centering around the antique business. He has with him, Taylor, who claims to be Bailey’s niece and is to be in the show, too. Soon Taylor demands to be allowed access to the store. She claims she wants to look for the partnership agreement between her uncle and Harry. But Josie wonders if there is some other reason she is so anxious to gain entrance.
The story behind Bea Ryder and the doilies will become an integral part of the story. Bea Ryder at one time had a dress shop across the street from Miss Marple Knits. Bea has been missing for a couple decades and no knows if she is still alive or dead. One of the doilies that were in the box proves extremely valuable in learning the identity of the killer, but will Josie be able to unravel everything before it is too late.
We get to learn more about the cantankerous Uncle Eb and Roy Woodruff feud that has them playing pranks on each other for a number of years. As well learn more about some of the characters.
A very exciting follow-up to the first book, Yarned and Dangerous. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book and to learn more about the quaint little town of Dorset Falls.
Knitting patterns are also included with the book
Book two in the Tangeled Web Mystery series by Sadie Hartwell is A Knit Before Dying. Josie, owner of Miss Marple Knits, is happy that her store is doing well. She is even happier to have rented out the adjoining storefront to two antique dealers, Lyndon and Harry. Lyndon, who arrives early to set up the store, seems like the perfect renter. Sadly her first meeting with Harry is when he is found by Josie standing over Lyndon's dead body. I read the previous book, but this one stands well on its own. The mystery is well written with a few twists and turns. While I am not a knitter, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters feel like dear friends, and I can hardly wait to visit them again.

Just six months ago, Josie Blair was a talented designer working for a far more famous one in New York City. The death of her great-aunt and accompanying unexpected inheritance led Josie to Dorset Falls, Connecticut, where she is blissfully running the Miss Marple Knits store and living on a rural farm. Her roommate Great-Uncle Eb may be cranky and demanding, refusing to show her the iron sculptures he creates in his woodshop, but his grouchiness is (mostly) only surface level. Josie affectionately accepts his cranky attitude, but the real challenge is becoming a business owner and landlord. Shop-running is going far smoother than expected, but Josie’s first experience renting out her building has just hit a bit of a bump. Lyndon Bailey barely had a chance to move in his stock before Josie finds him dead in his antiques store, with his business partner Harry Oglethorpe standing over the bloody corpse.
Despite the evidence, it’s not an open-and-shut case. True, Lyndon had plans for a television traveling show before his demise that would have left Harry out in the cold. Yet it’s not long before Lyndon’s niece arrives, demanding entrance to the antique store and towing along her own cameraman. Josie finds solace from all of the strife at the neighboring Woodruff farm, home of her favorite alpaca, not to mention the inexplicably attractive and overall nice guy Mitch Woodruff. Mitch and Josie may not be Romeo and Juliet, but her great-uncle and his grandfather have a rivalry that began with their fathers and continues through elaborately-plotted and hilarious pranks today. The reason behind their dispute is one the men refuse to disclose, adding yet another mystery to the old and new crimes that have descended upon Dorset falls.
Along with Josie, readers will find themselves enchanted with the picturesque town of Dorset Falls. This is one of those dream settings where the greatest source of information comes from the elders, whose families have lived in the town for generations. Josie and her friends look out for one another, gently meddling in one another’s lives and always looking out for their best interests. Dorset Falls is also a place that hides some ugly secrets, and readers will be invested in seeing that their favorite characters don’t come to harm. This charming cozy delves into the craft of knitting and specifically doilies, a forgotten craft that may provide Josie with the key to solving a multitude of mysteries. This second in the Tangled Web knitting series showcases strong friendships, sympathetic characters, and small-town intrigue.
This is a wonderful book 2 in the Tangled Web Mystery series. Dorsett Falls needs all the new business's it can get to revive the downtown area. Residents are excited that a new antique shop is opening. Josie is happy to rent the other half of her building not only for the rent it brings but for the tourists she hopes will visit. When she finds the owner dead and his partner standing beside him Josie knows the police will think Henry did it. As she and her friends from the Miss Marple Knits shop investigate there seems to be a connection to an unsolved missing person from many years ago. Love the knitting patterns included and Josie's secret attempts to learn to knit. Can't wait for the next installment.
Wonderful Series
A Knit Before Dying is the second book in Sadie Hartwell’s A Tangled Web Mystery series and a wonderful read. The storyline is well written, flows smoothly, and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the reveal. The characters are well developed, likeable, and relatable. There’s a strong sense of friendship in the community and especially within the knitting group at Miss Marple Knits. The characters, combined with Ms. Hartwell’s writing style, two mysteries, and lots of twists and turns in this book, made it hard to put this book down. There is no graphic violence or adult situations. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy a well-crafted cozy mystery.
Josie Blair was raised in Dorset Falls, Connecticut, but moved to New York City twelve years ago to be a fashion designer. Things didn’t go as planned, so when her Great Uncle Eben’s wife, Cora, passed away, she returned to Dorset Falls to help him close Cora’s yarn shop, Miss Marple Knits. She decided to stay and her great uncle gave her the yarn shop (even though she doesn’t know the first thing about knitting or crocheting) and the building next to it. Josie’s first tenants, Lyndon and Harry, are opening an antique shop, but Lyndon is murdered in the shop his first night there. Harry is the prime suspect because she walked into the shop the next morning and found him standing over Lyndon’s body. Josie loves a good mystery and she finds herself trying to discover who murdered her tenant and solve an old missing person case.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
First time I have read this author but enjoyed this book. I can empathize with her struggles in learning to knit. Her desire for the town to attract business was also understandable, it seems like a really nice place to see. I also liked her friends and was hope things work out for them.
A Knit Before Dying will keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning.
It's woven with so many twists and turns, you will keep guessing until the very end.
Josie is a fun character and her sidekicks are just as colorful.
Murder strikes close to home in this particular book and Josie has a feeling something fishy is going on.
Clues and secrets will lead Josie to the answers she seeks, but not before she puts herself in harm's way.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Was drawn to the cover and description of the book. Loved them both. Very pleased to say I was not disapointed when I read the book. It started a bit to slow for me and I was already to give up. But thankfully I didnt as it soon gathered pace. Few twists towards the end of the book which is always good. Enjoyable book all round
Hadn't read the first one in this series, though it is on my list to get in the future. Love the mix of handcrafting projects and Dorset Falls. Josie's Uncle reminds me of several relatives! Enjoyable reading, and looking forward to more.
I enjoyed this charming mystery better then the first. Josie had been developed even more as a character that I enjoy reading about . I enjoy the relationship she has with Evelyn and Helen. This is a solid mystery that even had me like what didn't see that coming
As an avid knitter and a lover of mysteries I was hooked from the very first sentence of this book which finds Josie describing the yarns she is putting on the shelves of her yarn store, Miss Marple Knits - and what a great name for a yarn/mystery story. Josie is a great character - she inherited this yarn store from her great aunt Cora but she does not know how to knit and the scenes of her watching a video on the internet to try and learn how are precious. Josie left her job as a fashion designer when she inherited the store and came to live with her great uncle Eb on his farm. she also inherited the building the store is in which came with another store next door which she has rented out to an antiques dealer, Lyndon. The day after Lyndon moves in he is found dead - stabbed with an antique sheep shearing tool which Lyndon and his business partner Harry just bought from the house of a local woman who disappeared many years ago. The police think Harry is the murderer, but Josie doesn't agree, and she gets herself involved in the investigation. This is a wonderful story - it includes farm life as Josie collects the eggs her chickens are laying, a small touch of possible romance for Josie and vivid descriptions of small town life and how hard it is for local businesses to survive in today's economy. It really is a special book.
