It was hard to get into this book with not having read previous books in the series. I highly recommend not reading this book if you are new to the series as I am.
Isis Crawford's newest culinary cozy mystery featuring Bernie and Libby Simmons, proprietors of "A Little Taste of Heaven" cafe and catering business seems a bit long on mystery and short on cozy. The first half of the book consists mainly of a very circuitous, fruitless investigation of the death of Darius Witherspoon during his catered Halloween event. There was very little interaction with the cast of cozy characters we've come to know and like in previous books. The second half of the book is much better balanced with more direct investigation and some sightings of bakery employees, boyfriends and their father. While the ending was satisfactory, I missed the bakery scenes, the boyfriend relationships and especially their close relationship with their father. It is still a good quick read with the cast of characters we've come to know in previous books.
This was one good mystery. It kept me engrossed from beginning to end. It has interesting characters, a plot that unfolds in ways you never expect and lots of excitement. I have enjoyed this series and this book makes me anxious to read the next one. I will definitely be waiting to pounce on it when it shows up.
