4.5 stars. This was by far my favorite of the 3 books in the series. I love a pouty man bear hero, and that's exactly what I got in Jonah.
Carla Hernandez has escaped from her life in Miami, and her high profile break-up with her fiance, to visit her Great Aunt Lola in Cuba. She needed time to lick her wounds and decompress in peace. She also has ideas of sprucing up Lola's old grand home, so that when she rents to boarders, she can charge more money. She has no idea she'll meet and take an instant dislike of, and yet attraction to, her Tia's favorite boarder, Jonah Kane.
Jonah is big man. He's also a semi-famous photojournalist, and he's having a little R&R time in Cuba after a scary trip to Syria for a job. He loves staying at Lola's place, as she's kind of adopted him as her own. With no family left of his own, he enjoys visiting her, and feels a bit responsible for her. So, when her great niece shows up, and he can tell she's a spoiled rotten princess, he's worried about her true motives where Lola and her home are concerned. He's also wildly attracted to her, but he doesn't plan to do anything about it. Best laid plans...
Jonah and Carla's chemistry was off the charts, and the love/hate, push/pull dynamic they had was so much fun to see. They really rubbed each other the wrong way at first, yet they still couldn't fight their attraction. I loved their banter, and their antagonism toward each other, especially once they both realized it wasn't going to stop them from getting together. They both have a lot of personal issues to overcome before they can even attempt a relationship. Also, neither of them truly planned to see each other after their liaison, but a little positive test changes everything.
Even with the baby coming, they both really have a lot to deal with, and being together just doesn't seem feasible, no matter how they might want it. Carla is the baby of her family, and she's always felt like a disappointment to her parents. Jonah has a painful past in regards to feeling he's letting people close to him down. They both had to come to terms with their strengths and weaknesses to make their situation work for them. I really appreciated their struggle. I also loved seeing the rest of Carla's family again, as they are all highly entertaining. Her Aunt Lola was a bawdy delight, and Jonah's best friend Charlie was quite the character too. Charlie will be the hero in book 4, so I'm definitely looking forward to that!
I truly enjoyed this book, and this couple. Jonah was so sensitive, and carefully cognizant of his size and the care he needed to take with the petite Carla. She was attracted to his strength, and his raw sexuality, as he was so different from her normal type. I really loved their evolution together, and I enjoyed their story so much. I'm thought this would be the end of the series, so I'm excited to see there will be a book 4, and I will definitely be reading it.
This is book 3 in the One Night in South Beach series and it features the very large and sexy photo journalist Jonah Kane and socialite, interior decorator Carla Hernandez. She was getting over a failed relationship and he was still running from his past. Their attraction towards each other was SIZZLING HOT! Carla is a little flaky and often forgets to turn on that mouth to brain filter, which often gets her in trouble with Jonah.
This is a fun, sexy and emotional read. It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading more from this fantastic author.
Sorry to say I was turned off by Carla, the main character. I didn't particularly care for her comments about priests and whom Jonas would be having sex with. I stopped reading after four chapters.
I was gifted this copy by Netgalley
Wow Carla sure is horny. From the start she admits to not liking Jonah, but finding him sexy enough to get down and dirty with anyways. And she has a kinky imagination too. I think Jonah is perfect for her, he tries to mellow her out some. I really enjoyed this book.
This is the third book in this series and I did not realize it. That being said, you can read it as a standalone, which I really love! I loved this book and really want to read the others in this series. I loved the banter between Carla and Jonah! I was sucked into this book from the beginning. This is my first but definetely not my last by this author!
I was given an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review.
This was listed as a romance so I wasn't expecting the amount of sex that it contained. The sexual thoughts and sexual activities of the lead characters dominated the book. Whilst I am not a prude I felt that this was excessive. I read to the end because I wanted to see if the actual storyline developed further, as the writing style was engaging. It did a bit but not enough for me.
Disappointed.
First let me say this book gets an A+++ for consent. The hero, Jonah knows he's a big guy, he's aware people may be wary of him for this reason so he never imposes on Carla, always gets consent before doing anything which i liked. but man these characters frustrated me at times. They'd say some things that just had me side eyeing like whyyy??
Most jarring thing is when Carla says this: "i got dumped. A gajillion people get dumped every day. And now i can't even take a little street harassment?"
UMMM WTF now i don't know any woman who would have guys following her down a street to the point where she has to enter someone's house to lose them and then she acts like oh well it wasn't that big of a deal. >.> no street harassment should be dismissed like this. This is just...nope.
And this is where my frustrations came in. I'd be enjoying the banter, enjoying the MCs chemistry then boom...things like this. listen, if i had even one guy following me far less more than one i'd freak TF out sooo it seems pretty ludicrous to me that Carla would say this. how TF she gonna compare getting dumped to street harassment???? Girl no.
I did adoore Carla's aunt Lola. she's a 60something woman who has an active sex life and isn't ashamed to let you know that lol. she was also pretty vocal about letting the MCs know they were acting a fool. loved her seriously. Carla's family dynamic was pretty interesting. I haven't read the other books (bought book 1 so i'll be going back to read) but I have to say the interactions we saw had me interested in knowing more about her siblings and parents.
So frustrations aside (side eyes mentions of manstruation as well >.>) I did like these two together.
Jonah starts out thinking of Carla as an air headed spoiled rich brat, but he eventually sees he's sooo wrong on this front. And i liked them together.
What a fun book that kept me on my toes and wanting more!
Carla, Most feisty of Hernandez family comes to Cuba to her great Aunt Lola’s house to mend her heart after dumped by her fiancee who everyone in her family hated. She wanted to escape Miami from it all. She was thought she was trouble maker compare to all her brother Javi and sister Alana since she was just an decorator.
One person Carla relates to happens to be in Aunt Lola and she decided to head to Cuba. When she arrives at her aunt Lola’s house, she is faced with big burly, statuesque man standing before her. Jonah was one of the guest at her Aunt’s house.
Both have been constantly rubbing each other in the wrong way since they have met. But Carla still feels strong attraction toward Jonah and when he rescued her after her panic attack, she feels more attracted to him. Once they were trapped in during a hurricane, they have decided to give up on their attraction and give into temptation.
Jonah didn’t want to complicate things in life but Carla stirs lots of feeling he kept inside of him and he wants to know more about Carla.
Their passionate night only last a night but consequences of their night created a life for Carla. After coming back from Cuba, she was finally finding herself and this happens to her but she decides to keep the baby and decides to invite Jonah to Carla’s sister Alana (1st book) to wedding. She couldn’t reveal the truth over the phone and she decided to tell him in person. When he finds about a baby, he is willing to change his life around for Carla and the baby but she doesn’t know it.
Carla didn’t want to reveal her pregnancy to any one except her sister Alana and her future sister-in-law (2nd book) Maya. She was finally coming to terms with her life but Hernandez family being loud and nosy especially males won’t let that happen. Now everything is out in the open and she doesn’t know what to do and he is ready to bolt.
Carla wants happiness with Jonah and the baby but nothing seems going well for Carla. Will she finally find her happiness like her sister and brother??
It was fun reading about all three siblings. They all have problems in their own way but they find their way back to happiness and I loved aunt Lola in this book. She maybe old but her love life was better than any of the characters. It was perfect summer read.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's got a fantastic storyline, with even more fantastic characters and is extremely well written too. A must try book which will take you by surprise with just how good it is. Would recommend
After reading Break of Day, I saw that this was the third part of a series. Since I didn't realize the fact that it was part of a series, means you can really read this book as a standalone. The book starts with Carla, who arrives at the doorstep of her aunt in Mexico. But instead of her aunt, some big and hot guy opens the door. And quite rude tries to get rid of her. However, the short tempered and sassy Carla is not about to let some stranger (no matter how hot he is) prevent her from entering her aunt's house. So after some funny banter, Carla enters the house to go find her aunt.
Jonah (yeah, the hot guy) is instantly attracted to the feisty princess. But princesses are high maintenance and that is not what Jonah is looking for right now. So ignoring and staying grumpy towards Carla are his main options to keep her at bay. So Carla doesn't really understand what the problem is with the dark and brooding guy currently staying at her aunt's. He, however is terribly wrong if he thinks she's after her aunt's money.
Because that is definitely not the case. Carla just needed to get away from home. From her ex-boyfriend (as in: really ex, out-the-door-never-want-to-see-you-again) and all the bad memories. But being single has some disadvantages and it is nice as some big and surly stranger can scratch that itch. Because after all: since he is not a keeper, it is 'no strings attached' fun. So when they are stranded together because of a hurricane crossing Havana, Jonah sees a different side of Carla, than the high maintenance princess he pecked her for.
But after the storm, Carla's dad is coming for her and whisks her away back home. There, Carla finds out the scratch kind of left a mark: in nine months to be precise...
Unable to tell Jonah the truth over the telephone, she asks him to accompany her to her sister's wedding. There, Jonah meets Carla's totally crazy family. Will the baby and her crazy family make him walk away?
Find out in Break of Day. Four out of five stars from me, with a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc. And I'll be checking out parts one (Stroke of Midnight) and two (Dusk Until Dawn) to see how the brother and sister of Carla get hooked up!
Andie Christopher writes a sweet love story. A good beach read!
