I love my visits to Mackinac Islands and Allie McMurphy's Hotel and Fudge Shop. Once again there is a murder, and Allie comes across her estranged cousin standing over the body. There is an increase in relationship issues with family, islanders and boyfriends that is very satisfying, all culminating in a dangerous and surprising conclusion. I love the Candy-Coated Mystery series and highly recommend 'Oh, Fudge!'
Allie McMurphy owns and operates the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop on Mackinac Island. She has no idea her cousin is on the island until she discovers her tampering with a dead body. Cozy mystery readers will love this story but it also has romance and will make you want to travel to Mackinac Island. Also, be sure to check out all the yummy fudge recipes.
I can't wait until the next book in A Candy-Coated Mystery series comes out to see what happens after an interesting twist in her personal life.
I'm always enthused when a new addition to the Candy-Coated Mystery series releases. Allie McMurphy, owner of the historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop, is visiting the Mackinac Island Butterfly House greenhouse with her furry sidekick, Mal, when she finds her cousin, Tori, hovering over a dead female body and clutching the handle of the bloody murder weapon. Tori already has a chip on her shoulder because she didn't inherit part of the hotel from their Papa Liam, and now she's Officer Rex Manning's top murder suspect. Tori denies the accusation and she and Allie begin separately sleuthing for evidence of the real culprit.
Author Nancy Coco hatches an appealing mystery full of suspicious incidents and a rash of colorful murderers-could-be. I love butterflies, and the Mackinac Island Butterfly House would be a place I could spend hours. As always, I had a great time re-visiting characters such as Jenn--Allie's smart and vivacious best friend; Frances--the hotel manager who's like family to Allie; and the handsome men vying for Allie's attention--Trent and Rex. The mystery wraps up nicely, and I hope more stories in this series are flitting around in the author's imagination!
An added bonus is yummy fudge recipes provided at the end of each chapter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy from NetGalley.
Enjoyable read.
A nice cozy mystery that will make you start guessing who was the killer. Love that there is a subplot to make things interesting while the investigation carries on.
The characters are great developed with flaws to make them more real.
The recipes at the end of must chapters was a definitely plus.
It was hard to get into this book with not having read previous books in the series. I highly recommend not reading this book if you are new to the series as I am.
I always enjoy my visits with Allie McMurphy and her friends even if she does take chances that don't always make sense. In Oh, Fudge! she was able to convince me that, while not necessarily wise, her choices were the only option she had. That alone takes this book a step above many popular cozy mysteries. The puzzles are interesting and do not fall quite the way I expect which adds to my enjoyment of the book. Her cousin arrives on the island just in time to be suspected of murder, so naturally Allie has to investigate even though her cousin is not exactly sending off the buddy vibes of their youth. Old friends who help and support her add a warm element to the series. Frances and Devaney are ready to get married with the help of Jenn and Allie. Rex continues to frown over Allie's constant involvement in his investigations, even as he lets her know that he very much approves of her on a personal level. Trent declares his love as strongly as ever but Allie hasn't completely forgiven him for closing her out during a recent murder investigation and now a new incident puts another road block in their relationship. Oh, Fudge! is an all round winner and I can't wait for the next book in the series, and the next, and the next.
Really enjoyed this book, but I love reading stories set in familiar places. Really love the characters and enjoy the fudge recipes!, More please!
I have enjoyed every book in this series I've read. Despite being set on an island, the author does a good effort in every book to take us somewhere different on the island though a lot is set in the McMurphy.
There were a couple of things that detracted a bit from this outing is the potential love triangle. I'm tired of love triangles in mysteries and I couldn't decide if Allie was acting out of character or not in her handling of the situation. I may also have missed something, but I thought someone had sworn to stay on the island, but was suddenly in Chicago. I also knew who the murder was and the motive pretty much straight from the start. Luckily, the author threw in more bad "goodness" to keep the reader interested.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I really like this series, but I found this one a little bit rough. Either I missed something, or there are some things that need to be explained. There were a couple of times when people talked that I didn't realize were in the room, and there were some things about timing (e.g. Allie wakes up at 8 am, and goes to the Butterfly house and gets there right before it closes). She also seemed to zero in on Sean as the prime suspect awfully fast without giving it much thought. Maybe I missed something, but it was a little bit jarring.
Wonderful written series colorful cast of characters that make you want to come back for more. I loves Allie in the book that last one left me not liking her at all the writer had taken away her spirit and spunk in regards too Trent and I hated that, the reason I enjoyed this series was because of Allie and her tenacity, love for your job and family and friends her honesty , spunk and etc . You get that Allie back along with a wonderfully woven mystery that I enjoyed. This mystery had me guessing and guessing wrong I loved it and all the red herrings that went along with it, didn't care for Allie cousin though not even at the end she wasn't likeable at all.
Allie McMurphy has a charmed life as the owner of the McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop on beautiful Mackinac Island except for her habit of finding dead bodies. This time, however, it is not Allie but her cousin Tori who is found in the butterfly garden with the body of Barbara Smart who has a garden spade in her chest with Tori's fingerprints on it and Tori is covered with Barbara's blood. Tori was meeting with Barbara to plan a fund raiser and Allie did not even know Tori, who lives in California, was on the island as Tori and Allie had not spoken since Allie inherited the hotel instead of Tori. But family is family and Allie's friends Frances and Jenn urge her to use her investigative skills to clear Tori. Despite warnings from Allie's police officer friend Rex she does just that and once again is able to get to the truth of the situation. This is a delightful series set on a beautiful island and the descriptions of life on the island always make me long to see Mackinac for myself, but the best part of the series is the fudge recipes that are included. I've tried several and they are all excellent.
An intriguing storyline. Characters who draw in the reader. Recipes included which is a plus for readers who wish to make fudge. However, the writing was sloppy...too many logical inconsistencies, verbiage that contradicted itself from one page to the next. The mystery for me is how did the manuscript survive editing in its present form? It is unfortunate that sloppy errors can murder a very lively storyline.
