Rhyming stanzas, surrounded by trees and plenty of greenery, tell the reader about what certain animals do, told chronologically with one daytime and one nighttime creature each month.
With the need to rhyme there’s not much room for description, making for a flowery pose that seems designed more for being read aloud than actual learning for the young’uns.
You don’t often find weasels included in kids’ books.
At the end there’s a match game to see if the reader remembers which animals are paired in which month, followed by more facts about each animal and a page actually called “Teachable Moments.”

This book highlights different animals through the months and season using daytime and nighttime as the setting. The information is given in a rhyming, poetic way accompanied by beautiful illustrations. This is a short book, but gives a great introduction to several themes. At the end of the book are some extra facts about the animals mentioned in the book as well as suggestions for parents/teachers to use the book with kids. This book could be used as an introduction when teaching about animals, whether it nocturnal vs diurnal, habitats, food, care of young etc. This book is probably best used with children 5 to 7 years old as the text and information is relatively simple. A great addition to a school, class or family library.

Recommended for: Preschoolers and kindergarteners. Lovers of animals and rhyming picture books. Teaching about nocturnal and diurnal animals in the United States. Teaching about animals in relation to the seasons.

This rhyming picture book introduces its readers to one nocturnal and one diurnal animal species for each month of the year. With lovely illustrations and a firm grasp on both rhythm and rhyme, Diane Lang and Andrea Gabriel work together to create a fun, informational book that could be used as a read aloud with preschoolers and kindergarteners. Rather than focusing on one geographic area, Daytime Nighttime, All Through the Year features animals from a few different biomes; the month of May, for example, highlights both a tortoise munching on cacti flowers and a mother opossum living in a more wooded area. From an educational perspective, the book would have been stronger had it limited itself to a particular place. After all, animal behaviors throughout the year can be quite different depending on geographic location.

I plan to purchase a physical copy of this book for my school library, as it connects quite nicely to a kindergarten unit called Night Magic, which touches upon the existence and behaviors of nocturnal animals. It could also be used to prompt questions or discussion about animal adaptations and seasons of the year.

A short educational read into the things that animals get up to throughout the year, from January through to December. It's a good way of teaching children about the things that animals do that they are perhaps not aware, such as hibernation, or going out hunting for food. The text is told in rhymes, which makes it a nice change from usual text, and the illustrations are beautiful.

There's an additional page of questions relating to the animals in the book, giving the reader more to explore, as well as some ideas for teachable topics. A good all-round educational book.

This is a truly gorgeous and educational book. The rhyming pattern will grab the attention of toddlers and early readers. It walks through each month of the year as the animals settle into the routines and patterns that keep the species healthy and alive year after year. It would be easy to incorporate this title into the classroom through activities. The book would also make an exceptional addition to the home library. It will be enjoyable for years to come with the stunning illustrations capturing a child's attention.

Beautifully-illustrated with engaging, rhyming text--here is a delightful, educational book about animal habits. "Explore More" sections for children and teachers follow the main text. A picture-matching quiz as well as suggestions for learning and activities are included. Highly recommended. Five stars!
