I like Valerie's books. They are well written and easy by read. Although Hart kissed Meg twice it was not too convincing that he cared that much for her. He was so stubborn and I would think itv would be just a little obvious how much Meg cared especially for how long she cared. I would have preferred him be more intuitive and figure out the depth of his feelings quicker. It would also make it more believable that Sarah had a good marriage if there was at least one b example like an aunt or uncle. Someone like that could have inspired Hart as well. Thanks
4.5 stars - Friends since they were children Meg has always loved Sarah's older brother. Hart's a real catch, so much so that a lady has already tried to trap him once before. Weary of such a thing ever happening again and with secret hopes of finding a love match he decides to marry and it's looking forward to the experience. Meg enlists the help of the reckless Lucy and nearly loses the love of her life. The mess is further exaggerated by a healthy dose of stubbornness and the HEA isn't secured until the very end.
It’s an entertaining read and love that is sure to stand the test of time.
I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Meg Timmons has harboured a strong affection for Hart Highgate, since she was a young girl. Viscount Highgate is her best friend's brother who doesn't return her regard, he sees her as merely a friend. She's also a penniless daughter of a gambler and to top it all, their parents have a long-standing feud. All the odds are stack against her. But Meg Timmons has a fighting spirit and she's single-minded about capturing Viscount Highgate's affection.
This is a lovely Regency novel with disparate characters spiced with family discord, secrets and scandals.
I received an advance reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley. This is my impartial review.
It is seemingly impossible to find a Valerie Bowman book that I don't love. She is such a great story teller, and this 8th book in the Playful Brides series did not disappoint.
Meg, our heroine, is such an adorable character. She is probably my second favorite (after Jane) from this series. Being a wallflower myself, I definitely relate to this character.
The hero of the tale, Hart is also a great character. My only fault with him is that his communication skills suck. Aside from that, he is very desirable.
I definitely recommend this book, Bowman is a wonderful author.
This was a well written book and kept you turning the page.
A buy and enjoy read! Arguably I should take off more stars for some of the base is not so believable at times. However, due to the way the author writes you can excuse that part and just keep reading. The author has a great way of telling a story and keeping you interested while developing her plot further. I would of wanted maybe a little more depth to the characters as well as more consistency, but all in all ..... a good read! I was given this book in return for a honest review. Anna Swedenmom
While in general I liked the characters and romance, the entire book was a bit long winded and unnecessary for me. I found myself skimming large amount of the novel to get to the action, and felt another edit or better subplot might have helped the manuscript. Overall, I liked the hero/heroine well enough, but not enough to recommend the book, or seek out other titles by the author.
“The Right Kind of Rogue” is the 8th book in the Playful Brides series. I’ve read all the books in the series, so far, and Valerie Bowman never disappoints. I have been waiting-impatiently- for Meg and Harts story since I read about them in “The Legendary Lord.” I usually love the wallflower books so this book was a perfect fit.
Our heroine, Meg, is the best friend of Sarah who ends up married to Christian Forester, Viscount Berkeley. Christian appears in many of the previous books as one of Lucy’s friend. Sarah and Meg are exact opposites. Where Sarah is the belle of the season, Meg is a wilting wallflower coming from a nearly impoverished family. Her gowns are outdated and her marriage prospects don’t exist. Meg has always loved Sarah’s brother -Hart since she was sixteen. The many problems with this is that Hart’s family expect him to make a good match. Meg is not a good match. Aside from being impoverished, her father and Hart’s father are enemies and loath each other. Hart has never thought twice about Meg until his sister marries Christian and he shares a kiss with Meg. Meg has never forgotten the kiss, and although a case of mistaken identity, neither has Hart. When Sarah tells her best friend that Hart has decided to find a wife Meg realizes that time is running out and she has to take matters into her own hands. Because Meg’s situation is very dire she seeks out the help of the ever clever Lucy. Lucy has had a hand in many of the matches in the previous books.
Lucy is determined to help Hart and Meg find their way to one another, but her plans rarely go smoothly and without a doubt hearts get broken. For Harts part, he is in need of a wife, when he finds himself drawn to Meg he knows that there are more appropriate girls for him but he is still drawn to her. Even though Meg and Hart finally end of married theirs is not a happy union. There are many miscommunications between them and Hart has a long way to go before he can learn to trust.
I should know by now that when I start a Valerie Bowman story I am going to finish it in one sitting. I was completely enthralled with Meg and Harts story. I ached for them and wanted to strangle Hart at different times! One of the common threads through this series is the female friendships that always bind the heroines and give them a shoulder to lean on! Humor is never missing in her books. The good news is that there is another book in the series! The bad! We have to wait for it.

What’s it About? Meg Timmons has loved the Viscount Hart Highgate since she was a young girl and has spent the last few years loving him in secret because she has no title, no dowry and oh yeah, her family hates his. Meg’s friendship with Hart’s sister is both a blessing and a curse since he’s always around and barely notices her. Then Hart announces that it’s time he got married and started working on producing the heir to the title and Meg realizes she’s about to lose him for good, so with some help from the Duchess of Claringdon, Meg sets out to get Hart to see her as more than just his little sister’s friend.
Overall reaction to the story? It was fun seeing most of the gang back together again for The Right Kind of Rogue and Lucy, the Duchess of Claringdon is up to her old tricks again in order to help Hart and Meg find love with each other. The Right Kind of Rogue had the right amount of charm and wit to entertain and enchant. I was apprehensive about this one since I loved the previous book in the Playful Brides series (It’s my favorite so far) but dang, Valerie Bowman didn’t disappoint with this one! Hart and Meg had a Romeo and Juliet type love going on but instead of a tragedy The Right Kind of Rogue mixed forbidden love with humor, friendship, and passion to create a fun and unforgettable romance.
Describe the hero in five words: Stubborn. Kind. Loyal. Funny. Smart.
Did you like him? Yes.
Why? As his father’s heir, Hart couldn’t be more different from his father if he tried. He was a warm and caring character who was easy to like but at the same time Hart felt a responsibility to marry a woman his father approved of. I liked the internal conflict Hart suffered because it showed that he wasn’t cold or calculating but that he also wanted to please his father in some way. His kindness towards Meg felt natural instead of forced because she was his sister’s closest friend and that really had me falling for him myself. Hart was good to his friends and tolerant of those who were different from him. Seriously, he was a total charmer.
Describe the heroine in five words: Stubborn. Caring. Snarky. Loyal. Intelligent.
Did you like her? Yes.
Why? Poor Meg, I totally sympathized with her case of unrequited love for Hart. She had everything BUT what society valued most: high social ranking and money. At first I was afraid she was going to be one of those tragic type heroines who end up a doormat for the hero and begging for him to love her but while Meg was desperately in love with Hart she did have her pride and a limit to how much she was willing to take from him. I really liked that about her. She loved fiercely but not to the point where she was willing to be treated badly in the hopes he would wake up and love her. She could tell Hart off just as well as she could love him.
Let’s talk about the romance: Meg fell in love with Hart at around sixteen with Hart being completely clueless the whole time and I liked how Valerie Bowman built on what could have been brushed off as a girlish crush. Meg knew why she loved Hart and it wasn’t because he was the knight in a silly fairytale scenario from her daydreams. I liked that it started with a crush but with some help from a scheming, well meaning friend Hart and Meg got to spend more time with each other than they would have if left on their own. The romance didn’t feel rushed even though there was a small timeline Meg had to work with. I enjoyed the light teasing between Hart and Meg, these two were obviously so perfect for each other and yet Hart was such a guy about it, a stubborn guy who tried to rationalize why he couldn’t marry Meg. Silly Hart, it was fun to see him finally fall.
How about that supporting cast? Hart’s sister and Meg’s best friend Sarah was caught in the worst position possible and she handled it well all things considered. The whole gang from the past books comes out to help Meg and in some cases to talk some sense into Hart and at the front of this group is Lucy, the Duchess of Claringdon, master planner, and shameless schemer. She’s a formidable force but she can come on a bit too strong so I would say she’s an acquired taste. I’ve read this series from the beginning and I can honestly say that sometimes I like her and sometimes I don’t. It just depends. In this case her pushy attitude served Hart and Meg well since they were so slow at getting from Point A to Point B
Click It or Skip It? Click It. Each book in the Playful Brides series has been fun but this one definitely ups the charm factor.
Great book. Had me laughing one minute and tears the next. I like a book that has ups and downs between the characters. This one definitely did.
I have read some of Ms. Bowman's Playful Brides series and I enjoyed this novel. Some of the characters in the previous novels make appearances but you do not need read the previous novels. I liked the writing style and the flow of the novel as well as the characters.
Meg Timmons is a wallflower and penniless since her father lost her dowry gambling. Meg is shy, but does become more outspoken throughout the novel. She is best friends with Sarah, whom is the sister to the man she has been in love with since she was sixteen. However, when he decides it is time to marry, Meg seeks out Lucy Hunt to help her win Hart's love. Meg's father is in debt and needs to relocate the family to somewhere away from the creditors. Both families are enemies of each other, but Meg does not know the reasoning behind it.
Viscount Hart Highgate is a rogue and finally decides to give into his father and find himself a wife. He enjoys ride speed carriage chases and women. He is wealthy, but knows his father has an ideal kind of bride, but all the women he meets do not stir him. When he sees Meg at a ball, he is shocked to see it is her. He agrees to help her find a husband. As they attend balls together, he enjoys being around her and gets upset when he sees someone else dancing with her or holding her attention (aka jealous but does not realize it). Hart has been deceived by a woman in the past and has troubling trusting.
Meg would not want to trap Hart after she learns about his past. Due to her family's situation, she knows she needs to marry and Hart has not come up to scratch even with Lucy and Sarah's involvements. However, one night changes everything and Hart loses trust in Meg, which devastates her. Will Hart and Meg be able to fix their relationship before its too late? Will Hart realize the woman he loves has been in front of him this whole time and forgive Meg?
Romance readers should enjoy this well written tale. Meg Timmons has no idea what events she'll stir into motion by asking Lucy, the Duchess of Claringdon, to help her catch and marry Hart Highgate. Meg has loved Hart, her best friend's brother, since she was sixteen years old but a family feud and her lack of a dowry makes their match nigh on to impossible. A Cinderella element, courtesy of Lucy, turns Meg from a faded wallflower to a glittering jewel as the all important London season begins. A handsome, wealthy, knight shows her attention, making Hart rethink his ideas on marriage and jealousy. Lots of twists and turns, heroes, villains, and stolen kisses. Yum.
I love this book! This is finally my top ten, and it's August! Not in that order! I absolutely loved sweet Meg, so horribly treated by her Mother, and her father is a wastrel! The one thing that has kept her going, is her love for Hart, her best friends brother. He defended her one time, when she was sixteen, from her Mother's vicious tongue! There are a couple of problems, if not more. She has no decent clothes, their families truly hate each other, and, probably worst of all, Hart doesn't realize, she exist! How on Earth is she going to get him to notice her, when his own sister, Sophie, does not want Meg hurt by falling in love with her Rougue of a brother? This is where the Duchess comes in, Lucy Hunt! Meg only thought she had troubles! I highly recommend Today! Thanks! I know that you will Enjoy!
