I was hooked from the first chapter. The plot moved along at a good pace, but the ending wasn't my favorite. The author made a huge deal out of the whole government aspect and it fell apart at the end. It was a bit of a disappointment. I enjoyed his writing style, but the ending needed some work.
Another great psychological thriller from Coben! As Nap tries to unravel the truth of the death of his twin, and the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend 15 years ago, there are so many twists & turns, I had no idea what direction the book was going in. With a final twist at the end that left me totally blindsided, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Another amazing and riveting one by Coben! I was immediately caught up in the story and stayed mesmerized the entire time. This one had characters I loved, and a suspenseful and thrilling storyline. One of this author's very best books!
Don't Let Go is another riveting psychological thriller by Mr. Coben!
Nap lost his twin brother, Leo, and Leo’s girlfriend, Diana, one high school night to a train collision. The same night Nap’s girlfriend, Maura, disappeared. When Don’t Let Go begins, it is fifteen years later. Nap is a police detective. Previously, Nap had run Maura’s fingerprints in the system but nothing was found. Then one day Maura’s fingerprints appear at a murder scene. The homicide detective investigating the murder contacts Nap. Additional information forces Nap to reconsider the “facts” of that night fifteen years ago.
Don’t Let Go was a real page turner. I was reading this book at work, at home, at traffic signals and everywhere else. It was that compelling. I love twisty thrillers and Don’t Let Go has that in abundance. I have read many thrillers so usually I can see the conclusion coming. Not in this case! The clues were all there but cleverly concealed. The ending was fantastic and unexpected.
I would recommend this book for anyone who likes a good mystery or thriller. It would be perfect for fans of John Sandford and James Patterson’s Alex Cross series. It is especially recommended to those readers who like to try to solve the mystery before the detective. Don’t Let Go is a stand-alone thriller. Even though the author has written twenty-eight previous books and I’ve read them all as they were published, I would recommend starting with Don’t Let Go. Mr. Coben is at the top of his game and his profession. Reading Don’t Let Go first will compel you to read the others. 5 stars!
Thanks to the publisher, Dutton, and Netgalley for an advanced review copy of Don’t Let Go in exchange for my honest review. This book will be published on September 26, 2017.
Another page turner by Mr. Coben. Nap will not stop until he learns the truth. Does everything that happens help him accept and understand, or should he have let it go.
Thank you netgalley for the advance copy.
While it was fun of Myron to make an appearance, I didn't enjoy this book as much as his previous works.
The premise was good, I just couldn't relate to the characters at all. I thought Nap was odd, though I did like his friendship with Ellie.
I knew nothing about the Nike Missile sites and this book led me to researching those. Using these as a backdrop was interesting and it becoming a Black Ops site made some sense. The obsession with Maura seemed to be a bit over the top. It was just high school after all.
I'm glad I read it but I'm hoping the next one is better.
A genuinely good read! I love that Harlan Coben seemed to go back to the basics, basing the book in NJ with a down-to-earth main character. The story kept me riveted and I finished it in less than a day. The only reason I'm not posting on Amazon is because it's pre-publication and they won't take the review. I recommend it highly.
Harlan Coben has achieved another mic drop with his latest book, Don't Let Go.
Don't you hate it when "real life" gets in the way of your reading? If work hadn't gotten in the way, and we hadn't been without power due to a storm for more than 24 hours, I would have devoured this book in one sitting. But even spread out over a few days, this book knocked me out, and once again reminded me (after the fantastic Home last year—see my original review) what a fantastic writer Coben is.
Napoleon "Nap" Dumas is a police detective in his suburban New Jersey hometown. Now in his mid-30s, living in his childhood home, he's never quite gotten over the death of his twin brother Leo during their senior year in high school. Leo and his girlfriend Diana were found dead on the local railroad tracks, believed to be either poor judgment due to drugs and alcohol, or some kind of double suicide. Nap never could understand how Leo could either make such a colossal mistake or how he could be so desperate, and this lack of closure has haunted him for years.
And if the shock of Leo and Diana's death wasn't enough for Nap to handle, his girlfriend Maura, also a friend of Leo and Diana's, disappeared that night. No matter how hard Nap tried to find her, he never could, and never understood why she left. Fifteen years later, Nap gets an alert that Maura's fingerprints have turned up in a rental car involved in the murder of a policeman, who, it turned out, was in the same high school class as Nap, Leo, and Maura. Suddenly Nap may be able to find answers to the two questions that have plagued him for years, and he is determined to do everything he can to uncover the truth, no matter how many people warn him simply to let it go.
But instead of finding answers, Nap keeps finding more questions, questions he might not want to know the answer to, questions which involve Leo and Maura and Diana and other high school classmates. And for some reason, right in the middle of all of the questions is a mystery surrounding an abandoned military base in their hometown, which some believed was far more nefarious than the story presented by the government.
What happened that fateful night which changed the course of so many lives? Was it government conspiracy, youthful folly gone wrong, or something even more sinister? Will finding the answers set Nap free to live his life, finally able to put the past behind him, or should he take the advice of those who tell him—and not all do it gently—to let it go? And will Nap even survive his hunt for the truth?
Much like Home, not only did Don't Let Go pack some punches, but it also contained a lot of raw emotional power as well. Nap, Maura, his best friend Ellie, and Diana's father (and Nap's mentor) Augie were fascinating characters, each with secrets of their own. Every time I thought I knew where the book was going Coben took the plot in a slightly different direction, and I was truly hooked from start to finish.
How many of us have wondered about whether we could have changed the course of a tragedy if we had only acted differently, or acted at all? That knowledge doesn't always help, and it creates a burden we must bear until we're ready to move on. That burden is so deeply felt in Don't Let Go, and Coben's mastery with the plot's twists and turns as well as its emotional intricacies makes this an excellent book.
NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Dutton provided me an advance copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Thanks for making this available!
Nap Dumas has never been the same in the 15 years since his twins death. When he was 18 his twin Leo and Leo's girlfriend were found dead on the rail road tracks. At the same time Naps girlfriend Maura disappears with no explanation. Since that fateful day Nap has been searching for Maura. He thinks there might be more to Leo's death and Maura could be the person to help him. When other high school friends start turning up dead, Nap can't help but think there could be a connection.
There are all sorts of twists in this book, possible government conspiracies and cover ups. Most of the characters are keeping secrets. All of Cobens books are good, but this wasn't my favorite. I would still recommend it to Coben readers. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy of this book.
Coben has another best seller in Don’t Let Go.
“Nap” Dumas' twin brother and girlfriend were killed by a train when they were in high school and his great love, Maura, disappeared immediately after. Fifteen years later, evidence of Maura resurfaces. Others who knew the dead couple are mysteriously killed and just what was going on at that Nike Missile base in town? Nap, now a police detective, is caught up in investigating what really happened those many years ago.
This novel was fast paced, and suspenseful; my curiosity wouldn’t let me put it down. I didn’t see the ending coming and was glad that Coben tied up all the unanswered questions, leaving nothing hanging. Coben is an excellent storyteller who writes with humor and insight. His fans will enjoy the Myron Bolitar cameo.
Full review to be published online in early September.
DONT LET GO is the newest release by one of the best authors in the genre of the psychological thriller. Harlan Coben is not the best writer in the world; but his gritty mysteries grab your attention and suck you in.
Once again, that's the case here. Nap can't let go of the long ago death of his brother and the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. Many years after the event, a thread comes loose and Nap begins to pull on it. The story is full of twists and turns, lies and violence; and Nap is not liking what he is beginning to uncover.
Really enjoyed the ride.
Cohen comes up with another winner! The twists and turns of the plot keep coming at you as you frantically race towards a satisfying conclusion. Great characters and plot make for a good beach read.
Gripping story, excellent character development, good writing, an ending I didn't see coming although all the clues are there -- these are all the elements of a good mystery and these elements and more are all present in this entry by Harlan Coben. Here he's at the top of his game. I picked this up needing to read something in contrast to the nonfiction and "literary fiction" in which I've been engrossed lately and, literally, could not put it down. Don't Let Go well deserves five stars.
Harlan Coben at his best!!! Blending humor, suspense & local legend - he will keep you riveted from the first to last page.
Once again Harlan Coben takes you on a suspenseful roller coaster ride that doesn't stop until the very end. I highly recommend.
A story about high school kids in a conspiracy club that has unexpected consequences. So many twists and turns that it is hard token up. A closed military base, accidental deaths, and a small town detective caught in the middle searching for answers and a lost high school love.
This is an incredibly fast-moving, well written book about justice delayed for 15 years. The story is narrated by Nap, a policeman, recounting a tale to his dead brother Leo, who mysteriously died by design or suicide when they were in high school.
The story is triggered when Nap discovers that Maura, his high school sweetheart who disappeared on the night of his brothers' death, has been discovered and linked to the very strange murder of another classmate, a crooked cop. As he investigates, he uncovers secrets, government conspiracy plots, is nearly killed and finally, the identity of his brothers' killer.
Though the plot is intricate, it is very engaging and holds together well. The pieces fit seamlessly and the ending gives the reader a sense of closure and even some hope for the tortured characters.
I really enjoyed it, as I do all of Coben's books. Fans will be well served when they read this.
At the beginning of the book there was too much reminiscing, I felt a little let down. Thankfully the story picked up after a couple of chapters, from there on l couldn't put it down till I finished. Another great book by Harlan Coben.
LOVE Harlan Coben books!!! I couldn't put this one down (no surprise there!) and stayed up until 2am to finish it. Loved the snarkiness of Nap and especially loved the ongoing conversations with Leo. I missed the clues as to who did what when and there was a lot going on! I've already suggested it to a few friends and can't wait to get it for my library!
