WHOA!!! Smart and twisty and thoroughly entertaining! Lots of surprises.
"She is everything Richard desires. Everything I used to be."
Sounds heartbreaking, no? Well, everything I assumed about this book went right out the window as I read this story. The synopsis is intentionally vague, as it should be! This thriller is tightly-crafted and well-written and was an absolute joy to read.
The most I will say about this book is that it is narrated by Vanessa, the seemingly-jealous former wife of Richard. She lived a life of comfortable luxury while married, which appears to have been snatched from under her when she divorced. From the Upper East Side to working girl, she seems to have taken quite a fall, both socially and mentally. Vanessa is now reduced to stalking her ex-husband's youthful and vibrant fiancé Emma, and from there the story quietly and emphatically builds to a stunning conclusion.
Vanessa's former married life with Richard is skillfully told through a series of flashbacks. Vanessa questions her own sanity and certainly seems to be hanging on by a thread at some points.
"Maybe this is how my mother felt when she had her lights-out days. I wish I’d understood better back then; I felt abandoned, but now I know some pain is too fierce to battle. You can only duck for cover and hope the sandstorm passes. It’s too late for me to tell her, though. Both of my parents are gone."
Vanessa was once exuberant and full of life, as Emma appears to be. But married life took a toll on her and her independence and spontaneity. Vanessa kept many secrets from her husband and so it seems almost predestined that their marriage, although once loving and perfect, would fail.
"That wasn’t the first time I’d betrayed Richard, and it wouldn’t be the last. Nor would it be the worst—not even close."
I love a domestic thriller and 'The Wife Between Us' is one of the best. Even the title is fantastic and so promising! My heart was pounding as Vanessa began to get closer and closer to the naive and unsuspecting Emma.
"Richard cannot marry again. I begin to make preparations. The next time I see her, I will be ready."
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have a stellar career ahead of them as a writing duo. I adored this book and the New York City setting. There is nothing more satisfying to me as a reader as when the authors know their settings and get it JUST right. You will feel as if you are right in the middle of the city when reading this addictive thriller! Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this intelligent and very moving story will satisfy every fan of psychological thrillers. Highly recommend!!
"“You need to remember that even when I’m not there, I’m always with you.”

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen was such a pleasant surprise. I read a lot of thrillers and most of them can fall pretty short of thrilling. It feels to me like there's this new trend (at least it feels newer and more present in thrillers lately) of needing a big twist that will shock you. The Wife Between Us manages to fit in a couple of shocking twists and turns, none of which I saw coming. I went in with zero expectations and I think that's the best way to approach this book.
Alternating story lines follow Nellie, a young woman falling in love with Richard. He's charming, supportive, kind, and seems a little too good to be true. Nellie lives with her best friend and coworker Samantha. She has a past that she keeps locked up tight, though mysterious phone calls in the middle of the night make her think that it might be catching up to her.
Then there's Vanessa, Richard's ex wife. She got nothing in the divorce and now lives with her aunt while working at Saks. She imagines Richard with her replacement, obsessing over what they could be doing that exact moment, even going as far as to spy on them together. No one really knows what happens, and Vanessa doesn't want anyone to know the part she played in her marriage's demise.
So two women, one man, mysterious pasts, and intrigue galore. Not very descriptive, but I think not knowing too much is the best way to go into this book. I will tell you that I read an insane amount of books, and in 2017 the majority of them were thrillers. I think I'm hard to impress, it takes something really special to shock me, but this book accomplished that seamlessly. One of my absolute favorite thrillers is The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. It was one of the first thrillers I read that left me with my jaw hanging open. I remember finishing and just saying "Wait, what?!!!" in utter shock and delight. The Wife Between Us gave me the exact same feeling and reaction, which I haven't had in years. I will say that by the end, I felt like maybe there was one twist too many, like ok you've already revealed so many unexpected things by this point, one more feels like a little too much. However, this didn't take away my absolute enjoyment of this book. I feel so grateful I got the chance to read it early and I cannot recommend picking up your own copy on January 9th enough.
Thanks again to St. Martin's Press for the advance copy.

This book blew my mind.
Holy awesomeness. Do Not Make Assumptions! . It's much easier said than done, to be honest. Everything I thought I knew could not have been more wrong.
Hendricks and Pekkanen are amazing together! They created such an outstanding tale of an ex-wife, a soon-to-be-wife, and an (ex)husband. This tale is completely shocking. It's a total manipulation of characters and you will not be able to anticipate a damn thing. Trust me, I tried.
The Wife Between Us is in my Top 5 Reads of 2018 and we're only 4 days into the year (and it's my first read of 2018). I mean, come on. This book had me on my toes, plunging me into the depths of this sordid, complex triangle. It's intense, it's page-turning, it's captivating, and it's brilliantly written. This book is everything I wanted, and everything I didn't know I wanted. It's a novel of epic proportions and I loved every single moment of my journey.
All I want to do is tell you everything about this book. But spoilers. So let me just say this: you will not regret buying and reading this book. It is a definite must-read.

DO NOT READ THE BLURB FOR THIS BOOK. Seriously, reading it without knowing anything is half the fun.
I enjoyed the first surprise, but it takes a while to get there. I did feel skeptical about the events that happen after that, but it kept my attention better than most thrillers.

This book is told by two people, in alternating chapters, a before and an after. You may think you know what is happening, what is real and what isn't, but you don't. All I can say is you are going to be blindsided..... over and over. So prepare to settle in... because you aren't going to want to put this down.

I truly am not sure how to write a review of this book without giving anything away, which is exactly why the summary of this book is so small and tells you to assume nothing. I suggest you take that advice: assume nothing! The characters are unreliable and the story line is believable, which makes for an incredible story! I am amazed at these two writers could put this together. There were times I thought I knew what was going on, then I realized that's exactly what I was supposed to think. However, I was wrong! There were times when I wasn't sure what was happening, but I never felt lost. If you enjoy a book that keeps you feeling unsettled and never want to put it down, then pick this one up!
* I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review *

Richard and Vanessa are divorced. Richard now loves his fiancé Nellie and their wedding is right around the corner. Vanessa isn’t happy that Richard has fallen in love with someone else and plans on breaking them up. This is not an extremely unusual situation, right? Insert your first big twist and you would be wrong!
I was really looking forward to this book after seeing so many glowing reviews for it. I’m afraid that I’m in the minority here and did not enjoy this book as much as I had expected. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought and believe I know why. What I expected and what I got were quite different. I was expecting an extremely twisty, crazy thriller, but what I got was more of a domestic thriller with a couple of fun twists. The first twist comes in the first half of the book and the other at the end. The rest of the twists reviewers are probably referring to are revelations and some aha moments – not really twists in my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy this book, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have any preconceived notions and hadn’t been constantly anticipating twists, wondering what they would be and so on.

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife and her obsession with her replacement.
You will assume you are reading about a woman about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves.
You will assume the first wife was a disaster and that the husband was well rid of her.
Assume nothing.
The last line pretty much sums it all up. Wow what a read! This is one book you definitely will not be able to figure out. I had to re-read some sentences because I didn't see that surprise coming. So many twists and turns. This is no ordinary husband, wife, mistress story. A definite read.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for a copy of "The Wife Between Us" in exchange for an honest review.

I waited to read this book until shortly before it's publication date. I hesitate to get excited about books compared to Gone Girl and others before I've read them because I'm usually disappointed. This time I was not. I enjoyed this book better than many I have read in this genre! I found it to be paced well and have a solid plot that I can follow. I love that the characters were well thought out and developed. I was surprised by some of the twists, particularly at the end and I though the author wrote an exceptional mystery!
So you ask, why only 4 stars? I admit I was occasionally a little confused and irritated at the relationships between the 3 main characters. That's all.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This is probably a 2.5 star book, but I'll round up as it did somewhat keep my interest, and the first twist was really interesting. But I think there are just too many of these kind of books out there, and I've read better. Also I've decided I just don't like reading about men like the husband in this book. The underlying story was paced well at the beginning, but then I kept waiting for something else. And the twist at the end, while definitely not predicted, would have been better I think as part of the story, not an epilogue. The main character was really the only one fleshed out well, other than perhaps the aunt, but character development was definitely not a strength. Overall, a quick, easy read, but nothing that makes it stand out in this genre.

What an intricately weaved story! And so many twists!
There is a lot to be said about the writing of this story. I love the manner of how this story is told. The details and how descriptive it is make you feel like you are there in every scene. It has a plot filled with depth that keeps you hanging on edge wondering how the story is going to play out. And just when you think you know a character and have it figured out, think again! After part 1, I had no idea where this story was going. Nelly, Vanessa, Richard, Maureen, Emma, who is telling the truth? Who can you trust?
This story will make you question, and re-read to make sure you read what you thought you read. If you think the twist at the end of part 1 shocks you, wait until part 3. And that epilogue…..I never saw that coming! Wow! The story is executed impeccably.
A compelling and complex psychological thriller filled with manipulation, betrayal, friendship, and smoke and mirrors! A fantastic story that kept me on my toes!

The book description is vague and it needs to be. You need to go in knowing as little as possible about The Wife Between Us. Even though it took me a while to read (having to work full time….) it was a page turner!
I did my best to NOT make assumptions while reading, but that was so difficult to do. If you assume, you are most likely wrong! I try to never assume since there are three words in assume….
The Wife Between Us is narrated in three parts. You don’t ever know what to expect with this novel. You think it is going one way then BAM you get an unexpected twist. I did figure out the first twist, but did not see the rest coming; and that final twist was totally unexpected on my part! I was thinking that final twist was going one way, but it was a complete 180 in reality. All I can say is pay attention to everything in this novel. The answers ARE there!
If you enjoy Suspense/Thrillers this is one you need to pick up on January 9th! This will be the first book in 2018 that you MUST read!
The Wife Between Us is highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley for my e-arc and also St. Martin’s Press for my print arc. This was a pleasure to read!

OMG - this book is a total mind game!! I LOVED it! It will make a perfect movie, but as always, books are best.
One would think it would be difficult to have two authors working on a book together, but obviously Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen know how to do so in a way that the result is seamless.
This is psychological suspense (the domestic version) at its best. The type with twists, turns, think you know what's going on but you don't, and sure didn't see that coming(!) book that readers love, with characters that are easy to relate to and so well-defined you think you know them. But you don't. With each chapter, there are reasons to make you doubt what you thought you knew and understood about what's really going on here. And then the next chapter will turn you around again. Brilliant!! The book preview says "Assume nothing!" and that is so true...
Vanessa is the ex-wife that seems to have lost herself and can't accept the fact that her husband Richard has moved on and is soon to marry Nellie, his former work assistant. She is obsessed with preventing the marriage, to the point that her actions cause her to lose her job at Saks. Time after time, she confronts Richard and Ellie and their encounters grow from awkward and pitying, to hard-nose. But things aren't what they seem - not with any of the characters, and that's where the fun begins. Secrets, lies, manipulations on all sides had my head spinning. I couldn't even write the review immediately after finishing the book, I had to let the dust settle, and to try to figure out what had just happened. This is that kind of book.
It's a quick, mesmerizing read that will have you wanting to talk it all out with someone afterwards. A perfect book club selection.
Can't say enough about The Wife Between us. Just WOW!!! Kudos to the authors and publisher St. Martin's Press. I can't wait to see the movie!!
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased opinion. Please send more like this my way! Whew!!!!!

I wish this had been a little bit as good as the description. Unfortunately it drags terribly. I found myself not caring what happened to any of them. Not for me.

This book was hands down amazing !
It started a bit slow, I feel like they spent 50% of the book going in one direction and then BAM something unexpected happens . I was really thrown off, in a good way when that happened, it made me devour the book even more! Great story, great ending, great plot twists. Really recommend.

This is a psychological thriller centered around a broken marriage. Vanessa and Richard have recently ended their marriage and there is a new girl in town that Vanessa likes to call her replacement. In order to keep from spoiling the story I won't reveal any more about the plot. There are a number of secrets and twists in this book that kept me turning pages.
I did find myself getting a little bored at parts (things seemed to repeat) but in a matter of pages things would pick up.
I was totally attached to the characters in this book. The writing was engaging and exciting. I felt as if I was in New York! The twits were believable and unpredictable and totally change the direction of the book. Pick this one up!

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press and Greer Hendricks for the opportunity to read and review this great domestic suspense story!
Everything that makes this kind of book great is here - unreliable narrators, lots of twists, having empathy for some of the characters. There were times that I just set the book down after a twist and thought - whoa, didn't see that coming!
The book begins by telling the story of Vanessa, the ex-wife of Richard, and Nellie, the soon-to-be-wife of Richard. Nellie is a preschool teacher who alludes to a past experience that has left her frightened. Richard sweeps in and literally takes care of everything for her. Vanessa meanwhile, is distraught, drinking too much, and is forced to live with her aunt and work at Sak's after their marriage ends.
The rest you will have to discover yourself because even a hint at some of the twists may be enough to ruin the ride. I had a hard time putting this one down - highly recommended!

I finished this book and still had a few questions about what the ending implied. I've put off writing this review (I finished it last week) because I'm having a hard time writing anything about the book without giving the twists and surprises away!
The two authors did a great job of intertwining characters in the story, and even if you figure out the "ah-ha" moments a step before they are revealed, the intricate layers are so well done that I, as a writer, am so impressed by how the authors plotted everything out.
A great read!

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin Press for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.
The best psychothriller ARC that I read in 2017!! Twists and unexpected turns throughout the book. I could not put this one down.
