I started this book, thinking I'd read a chapter before going to bed, and got completely hooked. Once started, it's impossible to put down. I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but it centers around a woman named Nellie who is preparing for her wedding to a man who seems too good to be true. After a traumatic event in college, Nellie always feels unsafe, and begins to feel even more unsafe when it becomes apparent that someone is watching her. The story also follows a woman named Vanessa, who is obsessed with stopping her ex-husbands upcoming marriage. If you like domestic thrillers, I suggest jumping straight into this one without reading any back-cover blurbs (which I think give too much away for this book!) I've been seeing this book be compared to The Girl on the Train, and I agree that if you liked that one, you'll like this one too! They both have the unreliable narrator (which I'm a huge fan of), relationships that you can't quite put your finger on, and have that unputdownable quality you're looking for in a book like this! (But less language and not quite as dark as TGotT, which I really appreciated.) I thought this was a well-written, entertaining read that I would highly recommend.
The Wife Between Us is a compelling domestic-suspense novel full of twists and turns.
While I did enjoy it and had a tough time putting it down, I appear to be in the minority. Part 1 was great but somewhere along the way my attention began to wane. I suppose it was a bit too slow for my liking.
I'm not going to get into the plot as with most thrillers you're better off going in blind but as I said, this book is full of twists - the first and last being the best.
Knowing this is being made into a movie, I'm quite curious to see how it turns out!
this book played with my mind consistently throughout. I had to reread parts to ensure I understood what happened, as certain details were revealed that changed everything. this book held my attention and kept me in suspense the entire time. I will be recommending this book to customers that are looking for a twisted thriller or something with many twists and turns. the description "assume nothing" is very very accurate in this story.
Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to review this book. What a great psychological thriller with twists and turns.
Vanessa is divorced from Richard and while she may appear to be infatuated with her ex husband and obsessed with wondering where she went wrong in the marriage, as you’ve been told “assume nothing.”
Richard has a new love in his life after his divorce from Vanessa. He gets frustrated with Vanessa contacting him and makes it seem like Vanessa needs mental help. But does she?
I was not expecting this book to take some of the twists and turns that it did. It definitely held my attention and was a hard one to lay down.
-I have tried to review this book on both amazon and goodreads and unable
To do so at this time.
Whiplash-inducing thrill ride of 2018!
Nellie is about to marry the man of her dreams, Richard a hedge fund manager in New York City. Vanessa is jealous of her ex-husband Richard's new fiancée and attempts to stop the wedding. The Wife Between Us starts as a classic triangle with alternating chapters narrated by the two women. In this simple shell hide many secrets and mysteries. What caused Vanessa's marriage to crumble so abruptly? What happened to Nellie in college in Florida that makes her so fearful? Is Vanessa inheriting her mother's mental illness possibly making her an unreliable narrator (like Girl on a Train)? Is Richard's seemingly perfect personality just a facade (like American Psycho)? There are many clues to the plot twists to come hidden in plain sight for observant readers to find.
Many books have been called the next Gone Girl but this book gets this reviewer's vote. Both a psychological thriller and a mystery, the Wife Between Us is highly recommended as the best twisty pulse-pounding thrill ride of 2018. Beware that sleep will be lost as the book propels the reader to finish it in one sitting! 5 stars!

In a Flutter: Chilling and wildly entertaining
Fluttering Thoughts:
Worldbuilding: New York and its complex world made for an interesting and layered setting.
Characters: Nellie the kids’ teacher that is about to marry the fab Richard seems sweet and obviously has some traumatic events in her past. There was something very vulnerable and naive about her. I wished her life would go great, but had a sinking suspicion that it wouldn’t.
Vanessa the ex lives a painful life after the divorce. She’s an obvious mess, but as the story unfolded I had a sinking suspicion that she’d gotten some help to get that way. The signs were there, and as things progressed I ended up being right about my suspicions. I won’t spoil the plot twist for you guys, though.
I will say though that however bad Richard is, I just can’t with Maureen. I just can’t.
Plot: The story is structured in 3 main parts, that together build a chilling and gripping picture. There’s a really cool plot twist that has to do with the structure of the narrative that I won’t spoil here, it would ruin the effect. But it’s awesome.
Writing: Third person, past tense narrative, Nellie’s POV, and first person present tense narrative from Vanessa’s POV. The Prologue sets a really creepy tone, and I loved the Epilogue for reasons I won’t disclose here so as not to ruin your surprise. I will say that Vanessa’s voice is heartbreaking, and experiencing things from her POV was very emotionally trying.
Curb Appeal: Cool cover, hooking blurb – impulsive buy material for my Psychological Thriller moods.
I recommend The Wife Between Us to fans of what I am now calling a genre: Marital Thriller – twisted stories of marriage gone wrong -, fans of stories about survivors of abuse and very interesting and twisty story structure.
This book delivered on all the hype promised in the description. It's a great thriller mystery that kept me up all night, with twists and turns galore. I really hope this has been optioned for a movie, it certainly deserves to be and will make a great film.
Without giving away spoilers, Vanessa is a divorced woman who is watching her ex-husband Richard preparing to get remarried. She's obsessed with his wife-t0-be, Nellie, who has a lot in common with the way she used to be when she first got married. The story is told from both Vanessa and Nellie's point of view, but it's not what you expect at all!
I loved this book and highly recommend it. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book. I was kept guessing right to the end. I will look forward to reading more from this author
Woman (Vanessa) is jealous of her ex-husband (Richard's) new fiance (Emma) ... or is there more to this story than meets the eye?!?
This book received a lot of hype and a lot of really cool marketing (including two specially mailed postcards similar to the campaigns for Behind Closed Doors and He Said/She Said), which is difficult to live up to.
I might end up in the minority on this one, but in my opinion, this book was just ok. The writing was good, but the plot itself was lacking. It felt like the story was written to fit the twists, rather than the other way around. The suspense level was just so-so. If you're looking for a page turner, this is not it. My overall opinion: Much ado about nothing.
Thank you to the authors, the publisher, Reading Group Gold, BookishFirst, and NetGalley for four ARCs of this book in exchange for my honest review! I gave away two paperback copies on my book blog.

They promised a twist and they delivered!
What actually intrigued me the most, and what led to my requesting the novel, was it’s being written by two writers. As a writer myself, I find it absolutely fascinating and it completely works in this book. The basic premise though sounded fine but nothing exciting. I usually don’t go for contemporary life books, even in thrillers, because they tend to disappoint. Domestic thrillers in particular have been very popular of late (i.e. Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, so on) but I rarely have enjoyed them.
But THIS BOOK grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. I absolutely love an unreliable narrator (They are a favorite of mine.) and the formatting of chapters, with the alternation of the women's stories, sets the reader up to question every move the characters make. There is a great sense of something lingering below the surface that all good thrillers possess. But who is the monster waiting in the dark? Read on to find out.
That twist though. Wow. I dissect books as I read (occupational hazard I guess) but I did not see it coming. Sure, there were coincidences but nothing to make you really know until you’re hit with it. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Great read to start off the new year with a bang!
My one tiny criticism sits with the fact that the two chapters after the climax felt rushed for a book ending. While I liked the bit with Emma, the chapter before with Maureen left too many loose ends for my taste. But still, very highly recommend this one!
Note: I received a free Kindle edition of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher St. Martin’s Press, and the authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for the opportunity to read and review it.
WHOA!!! Smart and twisty and thoroughly entertaining! Lots of surprises.
"She is everything Richard desires. Everything I used to be."
Sounds heartbreaking, no? Well, everything I assumed about this book went right out the window as I read this story. The synopsis is intentionally vague, as it should be! This thriller is tightly-crafted and well-written and was an absolute joy to read.
The most I will say about this book is that it is narrated by Vanessa, the seemingly-jealous former wife of Richard. She lived a life of comfortable luxury while married, which appears to have been snatched from under her when she divorced. From the Upper East Side to working girl, she seems to have taken quite a fall, both socially and mentally. Vanessa is now reduced to stalking her ex-husband's youthful and vibrant fiancé Emma, and from there the story quietly and emphatically builds to a stunning conclusion.
Vanessa's former married life with Richard is skillfully told through a series of flashbacks. Vanessa questions her own sanity and certainly seems to be hanging on by a thread at some points.
"Maybe this is how my mother felt when she had her lights-out days. I wish I’d understood better back then; I felt abandoned, but now I know some pain is too fierce to battle. You can only duck for cover and hope the sandstorm passes. It’s too late for me to tell her, though. Both of my parents are gone."
Vanessa was once exuberant and full of life, as Emma appears to be. But married life took a toll on her and her independence and spontaneity. Vanessa kept many secrets from her husband and so it seems almost predestined that their marriage, although once loving and perfect, would fail.
"That wasn’t the first time I’d betrayed Richard, and it wouldn’t be the last. Nor would it be the worst—not even close."
I love a domestic thriller and 'The Wife Between Us' is one of the best. Even the title is fantastic and so promising! My heart was pounding as Vanessa began to get closer and closer to the naive and unsuspecting Emma.
"Richard cannot marry again. I begin to make preparations. The next time I see her, I will be ready."
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have a stellar career ahead of them as a writing duo. I adored this book and the New York City setting. There is nothing more satisfying to me as a reader as when the authors know their settings and get it JUST right. You will feel as if you are right in the middle of the city when reading this addictive thriller! Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this intelligent and very moving story will satisfy every fan of psychological thrillers. Highly recommend!!
"“You need to remember that even when I’m not there, I’m always with you.”
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen was such a pleasant surprise. I read a lot of thrillers and most of them can fall pretty short of thrilling. It feels to me like there's this new trend (at least it feels newer and more present in thrillers lately) of needing a big twist that will shock you. The Wife Between Us manages to fit in a couple of shocking twists and turns, none of which I saw coming. I went in with zero expectations and I think that's the best way to approach this book.
Alternating story lines follow Nellie, a young woman falling in love with Richard. He's charming, supportive, kind, and seems a little too good to be true. Nellie lives with her best friend and coworker Samantha. She has a past that she keeps locked up tight, though mysterious phone calls in the middle of the night make her think that it might be catching up to her.
Then there's Vanessa, Richard's ex wife. She got nothing in the divorce and now lives with her aunt while working at Saks. She imagines Richard with her replacement, obsessing over what they could be doing that exact moment, even going as far as to spy on them together. No one really knows what happens, and Vanessa doesn't want anyone to know the part she played in her marriage's demise.
So two women, one man, mysterious pasts, and intrigue galore. Not very descriptive, but I think not knowing too much is the best way to go into this book. I will tell you that I read an insane amount of books, and in 2017 the majority of them were thrillers. I think I'm hard to impress, it takes something really special to shock me, but this book accomplished that seamlessly. One of my absolute favorite thrillers is The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. It was one of the first thrillers I read that left me with my jaw hanging open. I remember finishing and just saying "Wait, what?!!!" in utter shock and delight. The Wife Between Us gave me the exact same feeling and reaction, which I haven't had in years. I will say that by the end, I felt like maybe there was one twist too many, like ok you've already revealed so many unexpected things by this point, one more feels like a little too much. However, this didn't take away my absolute enjoyment of this book. I feel so grateful I got the chance to read it early and I cannot recommend picking up your own copy on January 9th enough.
Thanks again to St. Martin's Press for the advance copy.
This book blew my mind.
Holy awesomeness. Do Not Make Assumptions! . It's much easier said than done, to be honest. Everything I thought I knew could not have been more wrong.
Hendricks and Pekkanen are amazing together! They created such an outstanding tale of an ex-wife, a soon-to-be-wife, and an (ex)husband. This tale is completely shocking. It's a total manipulation of characters and you will not be able to anticipate a damn thing. Trust me, I tried.
The Wife Between Us is in my Top 5 Reads of 2018 and we're only 4 days into the year (and it's my first read of 2018). I mean, come on. This book had me on my toes, plunging me into the depths of this sordid, complex triangle. It's intense, it's page-turning, it's captivating, and it's brilliantly written. This book is everything I wanted, and everything I didn't know I wanted. It's a novel of epic proportions and I loved every single moment of my journey.
All I want to do is tell you everything about this book. But spoilers. So let me just say this: you will not regret buying and reading this book. It is a definite must-read.
DO NOT READ THE BLURB FOR THIS BOOK. Seriously, reading it without knowing anything is half the fun.
I enjoyed the first surprise, but it takes a while to get there. I did feel skeptical about the events that happen after that, but it kept my attention better than most thrillers.
This book is told by two people, in alternating chapters, a before and an after. You may think you know what is happening, what is real and what isn't, but you don't. All I can say is you are going to be blindsided..... over and over. So prepare to settle in... because you aren't going to want to put this down.
I truly am not sure how to write a review of this book without giving anything away, which is exactly why the summary of this book is so small and tells you to assume nothing. I suggest you take that advice: assume nothing! The characters are unreliable and the story line is believable, which makes for an incredible story! I am amazed at these two writers could put this together. There were times I thought I knew what was going on, then I realized that's exactly what I was supposed to think. However, I was wrong! There were times when I wasn't sure what was happening, but I never felt lost. If you enjoy a book that keeps you feeling unsettled and never want to put it down, then pick this one up!
* I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review *
Richard and Vanessa are divorced. Richard now loves his fiancé Nellie and their wedding is right around the corner. Vanessa isn’t happy that Richard has fallen in love with someone else and plans on breaking them up. This is not an extremely unusual situation, right? Insert your first big twist and you would be wrong!
I was really looking forward to this book after seeing so many glowing reviews for it. I’m afraid that I’m in the minority here and did not enjoy this book as much as I had expected. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought and believe I know why. What I expected and what I got were quite different. I was expecting an extremely twisty, crazy thriller, but what I got was more of a domestic thriller with a couple of fun twists. The first twist comes in the first half of the book and the other at the end. The rest of the twists reviewers are probably referring to are revelations and some aha moments – not really twists in my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy this book, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have any preconceived notions and hadn’t been constantly anticipating twists, wondering what they would be and so on.
When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife and her obsession with her replacement.
You will assume you are reading about a woman about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves.
You will assume the first wife was a disaster and that the husband was well rid of her.
Assume nothing.
The last line pretty much sums it all up. Wow what a read! This is one book you definitely will not be able to figure out. I had to re-read some sentences because I didn't see that surprise coming. So many twists and turns. This is no ordinary husband, wife, mistress story. A definite read.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for a copy of "The Wife Between Us" in exchange for an honest review.
I waited to read this book until shortly before it's publication date. I hesitate to get excited about books compared to Gone Girl and others before I've read them because I'm usually disappointed. This time I was not. I enjoyed this book better than many I have read in this genre! I found it to be paced well and have a solid plot that I can follow. I love that the characters were well thought out and developed. I was surprised by some of the twists, particularly at the end and I though the author wrote an exceptional mystery!
So you ask, why only 4 stars? I admit I was occasionally a little confused and irritated at the relationships between the 3 main characters. That's all.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
