I found my mind wandering at some points and I thought it was perhaps a tad too long and repetitive. Honestly, I didn't finish the book and that has only happened one other time.
I really struggled to read this book, as I didn't like the protagonist, but the twists and turns made me willing to see it through to the end.
I had heard a lot of great hype for this book and was excited when I received an ARC copy from the publisher. The first part of the book alternates chapters from two different perspectives - a man's ex-wife and new fiance. I found this a bit confusing because the two characters are similar enough where I couldn't always keep them apart. The later parts of the book are told from a single perspective and by this point I had figured out the characters and enjoyed it more.
The thing I loved about this book was that it continually kept me guessing. When I started to feel like I had the plot and twist figured out, things changed and I began to second guess my thoughts. There was a nice, unexpected twist at the end of the book and thought it wrapped up nicely.
I would compare this book to The Girl on the Train, but done more successfully. It has a similar feel by having an ex-wife stalk/interfere with her ex-husband's new relationship. If you enjoyed that book or are intrigued by that type of plot, I would recommend picking this one up.
A definite 5 Stars for The Wife Between Us!! This book was a twisted thriller the whole way through. I did not want to put the book down. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book for my honest review.
I had a really hard time getting into this book. I was confused for at least half, but I wanted to keep going to know what would happen. I’m glad I did. There were twists along the way. Not one of my favorites, but an entertaining read.
In the vein of The Other Mrs Parrish. It kept me entertained . I didn’t see the twists coming and I loved every moment of this book.
Hidey-ho fellow SMPer! I'm just leaving a review that I don't want you to publish because I checked this book out via Netgalley and am trying to raise my score. I wish we could send ebooks from the MDL to our Kindle! Please don't post this publically haha!
Nellie is a beautiful young teacher, engaged to a man who is successful and wealthy. on the brink of an exciting new life.
Vanessa, who still loves her husband, has suffered the breakdown of her marriage and is struggling to survive alone.
In the interest of avoiding spoilers, I will keep this review short and sweet. This book is full of twists, shocks and surprises and is a pacy, engaging read. It's well worth spending time with.
Twisted, though provoking, riveting, chilling, and just plain good entertainment this book will take you on one Hell of a rollercoaster. I cannot recommend enough, nor will I say more and give anything away. READ IT FOR YOURSELF. The Wife Between Us will not disappoint.
So many twist and turns...
A real page turner. It is not everyday that I have the fortune of reading a mystery that I haven’t anticipated the the twists. I think it comes from years of Law and Order, 20/20 and dateline- perhaps I should have been a detective. That said, The Wife Between Us kept me guessing.
I enjoyed the mystery unraveling, the characters and the backgrounds.
I promise you will read and guess until the last page.
I could not finish this book. I was not enjoying the story or the writing style. With two authors writing the story it felt choppy. The story line was nothing new.
One of the best books I’ve read this year! Will now be one of my favorite author duos and books of all time. Everything that I look for in a thriller I have found in this book and I could not put this down. I really liked Vanessa’s character and I felt for her being in an abusive relationship with Richard. I understood why she did what she did to find a replacement and it was truly for her safety. What I loved was how she went back to warn Emma about Richard even knowing she could be harmed again by Richard. The plot twist at the Epilogue was craaaaaazy and didn’t see that coming!
Very good book, didn't want to put it down, the various storylines along with the main story with Nellie and Richard were both intriguing and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
An enjoyable book; it drags slightly in the middle, but has a few good twists that make it a fun beach read.
The twisty plot keeps you guessing until the very last page. Great story of a love triangle gone wrong!
THE WIFE BETWEEN US - Greer Hendricks
LOTS OF TWISTS - 4 stars
Plot - 4 stars - Vanessa is struggling to face the end of her marriage and is falling apart. Although Richard has moved on, she is stuck in her memories and can't seem to let go of the players--Richard and herself and "her replacement."
Writing - 4.5 stars - The plot evolves throughout this book, sending us first one way, then in a completely different direction. The writer did a great job of keeping the focus along one line, not allowing the reader to realize that the story would make a complete change. After the second twist, however, I had an inkling that things would change once again, and they did but not really in the direction I had anticipated. Very intriguing plot and supportive writing.
Characters - 4 stars - These are characters that you love to hate as you get to know them. They show friendly and attractive faces to the world, then as they develop, you start to see the secrets they have hidden. Vanessa comes across as the voice of reason, but you start to see the cracks beneath the surface as the story develops. Richard is the bad guy, but he also has another side that becomes apparent eventually. There's a lot of interaction amongst a small cast of characters, and their stories are intriguingly developed, with well-crafted back stories.
Title - 3.5 stars - This title is interesting because it can be interpreted one way at the beginning but another way at the end.
Cover - 4 stars - An attractively-colored cover that is still dark and somewhat shadowy. It definitely sets the mood for the story.
Overview - 4 stars - What a fascinating book! As the authors intended, I began with a certain plotline in mind, following through Part 1 in its entirety before I started to suspect something more sinister. Forewarned, Part 2 didn't fool me as much until I got to the end and discovered that I had once again been led astray. Then the ending had yet another surprise! So I'd say there were almost too many plot twists. Not that they weren't intriguing, because they were, but too much of a good thing is always a problem for me. And this made the end of the book a little too much of an anti-climax and left me feeling somewhat let down, thinking...oh yeah, just another twist. There's certainly an art to the timing of revealing the twist, and I felt this book missed it a bit at the end. You have to maintain the mystery, of course, as long as possible, but this book dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, so the sense of mystery vanished too suddenly and I was left deflated. However, I did find the story intriguing and the characters compelling. I just couldn't put it down. I'll definitely look for more from these authors.
I am reading everything I can find by this author now. The book was well paced and I enjoyed the protagonist very much. Will be looking forward to more from Greer Hendricks.
The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.
The book begins by alternating between the narratives of Richard's ex-wife, Vanessa, who has been left poor and with a drinking problem ever since their mysterious break-up, and his new and young fiancée, Nellie, who is busy making wedding plans and trying to ignore the feeling that someone is following her. Vanessa is determined to stop Richard marrying again, but how far will she go to prevent it?
The twists and turns of this book were fun to read and I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys thrillers.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for this ARC of The Wife Between Us. All opinions are my own.
Great story and the characters are so well written I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommend, if you want a book that has secrets, a plot for revenge, and redemption this has our all and then some!
The Wife Between Us doesn’t fully realize it’s potential as a domestic thriller in a way that was satisfying to me. While the quite and calculating approach the authors seem to prefer worked really well in Hendrick’s and Pekkanen’s other novel An Anonymous Girl, here it made the narrative less thrilling and more soap opera-ish than I would have wanted.
There is a fun twist that leads the reader into Part Two of the book, but when it came right down to the bulk of the novel, that was the biggest twist to happen, so it felt like that happened too early. I found the rest of the plot to be more of a stress-fuelled drama than thriller, and the revelations to be interesting and clever, but not necessarily mind-blowing or shocking.
It’s still a pretty decent read and I never got bored with it, but it’s just not what I thought it was going to be considering the hype.
