In this first book of theAmish Homestead series, Kayla Dienner, having suffered her fair share of heartache, vows to protect her heart at all costs . . . That is until she meets Jamie Riehl. Jaime is kept busy with his volunteer work at the local fire department and running his Amish farm. He barely has time to eat With the family much less find someone to date. Then he meets Kayla Dienner and is smitten. Having been hurt by an ex-boyfriend and losing her firefighter brother in a fire, Kayla tries hard to deny her attraction to Jamie. Her younger brother, Nathan, wants to become a firefighter, but she can’t bear the idea of another possible loss.. Then when tragedy strikes, Jamie wants to extinguish the relationship between him and Kayla. Can Kayla trust and forgive enough to love again? Will Jaime forgive himself and except his love for Kayla? I loved this novel of a quiet community in Lancaster County and the love that burns brightly regardless of the cost.

Jamie is an Amish fireman who only has time for his job and his dad's farm. Then he gets an emergency call to go to a barn burning to rescue a boy and his horses. While there, he meets Kayla, the sister of the boy he rescues from the barn.
Kayla and Jamie enjoy talking together until Daniel, her brother asks Daniel about the firefighting training program for teenagers.
Jamie describes the program but he gets an angry response from Kayla because she lost her older brother Simeon when he was killed as a firefighter.
Jamie does not know about Simeon until a friend tells him what happened and he feels terrible for upsetting Kayla unintentionally.
Jamie likes Kayla and he makes friends with her and eats frequently at her family's restaurant.
Then a family tragedy happens and Jamie and Kayla's relationship suffers.
You will need to read the book for yourself to see what happens to Jamie, Kayla and Daniel.
I am not a huge fan of Amish Fiction. This story was a typical, sweet love story. Many would enjoy it!
I wanted to try something completely different but it didn't work for me, I feel it was worth trying because it's very well written. Even so now I know that it is not the kind of plot that I enjoy the most
Heartbreaking story about dealing with death of love ones. This story is very relatable to people who are struggling with life after losing a love one. The one thing that I found disturbing was that Kayla wanted to be first in Jamie's life. It never was mentioned that God is first. Other than that I really liked the book.
I love Amish fiction, and I adore Amy Clipston's writing. I have loved every book of hers, and A Place At Our Table is no exception. It is a cozy, warm, adventurous read. (Anything involving emotions is adventurous for this emotion-avoiding reader.) The book also touches on the loss of a parent, which definitely drew me close to one of the characters, having lost a parent myself.
Relatable, rich characters. Descriptive scenery and circumstances. I had a hard time putting this book down, and an even harder time saying goodbye to the characters. A beautiful book and a must-read.
I was given an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion. This was a quick read and a typical Amish romance book with a hea!
Amy Clipston has long been a talented story teller, and "A Place at Our Table" is no exception. This is one of those books I stayed up all night to finish because it grabs the reader from the first page. The Dienners and the Riehls become closely intertwined in each others family lives on the night that Jamie Riehl, an Amish volunteer firefighter, helps save the life of 14 year old Nathan Dienner in a burning barn. Kayla Dienner, Nathan's older sister, is at once grateful to Jamie and also warns him from interesting Nathan in being a firefighter.
Jamie feels a strong calling to help others in his role as a firefighter, which he juggles with his high sense of responsibility in helping his brother and father run their farm. Jamies' sense and level of duty to his family rise even more sharply when a loved one suffers a horrific accident that he feels responsible for. This leads to him wrestling with deep guilt and grief.
All the while, he feels drawn to Kayla and makes several visits to her family's restaurant, where Kayla works in the dining room area. Jamie and Kayla develop a friendship they would like to have deepen into something further, but this is hampered by Jamie's difficulty in balancing his responsibilities. Kayla deals with great frustration from this.
I highly recommend " A Place at Our Table" to fellow readers!
I enjoyed this book. It was a slow going romance novel that let me glimpse into another world. Now I am now well verse on the Amish so I can't say how factual it is but I enjoyed it as is.
