I loved both these books. They are each short reads with lots of action and adventure. The writing is subperb. I just love the interaction between the characters. They each have great depth to their personalities.
****I voluntarily reviewed and gave my honest opinion of this Advanced Reviewer's Copy of this
book from Net Galley***
4 1/2 stars
After reading Alpha Crew: The Mission Begins: At the Edge and Edge of Surrender and just having written a review for another book, it feels like I should add a new measure as well as an overall rating: a book’s putting-downness (not a good made up word so I may have to work on that). What I mean, which I hope is obvious, is the frequency with which you voluntarily set a book aside while reading.
For Alpha Crew: The Mission Begins: At the Edge and Edge of Surrender I hardly volunteered to set it aside at all.
Like most Laura Griffin novels I’ve read, Alpha Crew starts out with a bang and just keeps rolling. She intermixes a scorching love affair with the action without missing a beat.
I also loved the characters of Emma and Ryan. While they were both likable, they also felt very human with their doubts and little screw-ups and the heat they create is off-the-scale.
Also, since this is in my mind after having just written a review of a book that was also the beginning of a series, Griffin did not introduce a ton of characters. She wrote what was needed and didn’t confuse the reader.
Interjected with all of the action and romance was enough detail about the Philippine jungle and other elements of the story that showed Griffin, as always, had done research to accompany her writing. While most readers may not appreciate that or even care, this one does, very much.
If you’re considering adding this to your list of reads and look at the Goodreads or Amazon reviews for each installment, you may find that some readers were frustrated by the fact that Emma and Ryan’s story was initially sold in two parts. This review is for the novel which incorporates both parts so that should alleviate some of the less than stellar reviews.
What a great start to a new series! I am off to read the next one, Cover of Night, with the review hopefully coming in the next couple of days to precede next week’s release.
While I have been a fan of her Tracers series, I am so pleased that she has decided to write about SEALS. What fun! It seems like Griffin and SEAL stories were meant for each other!
This is the odd case that shows how disorganized yours truly is because I bought the kindle version as well as received an ARC for an honest review. Ah, well.
I read At the Edge previously and loved the book but hated that it was so short and ended on a cliffhanger so seeing the author combine the two stories into one book was definitely a plus for me! Here's my review of each book:
If my rating was based on the story line itself I would have given this story a rating of 4.5. However the only reason I rated it as 3 stars was because of the cliffhanger the author left. I don't have anything against cliffhangers and actually enjoy reading series, however this book just sort of ended very abruptly. The book is not very long and therefore could have easily been completed as one book rather than trying to get the reader to buy a second one. If this book were longer I could understand the need to split it into two different books, but I finished this book in less than 2 hours.
The story line itself grabs your attention from the start. You have a small plane carrying Emma, a pilot, a US ambassador's wife and a doctor that crashes into the middle of a rain forest on an island known for hostiles. A Navy Seal team is immediately in the air, their mission to save any survivors. Unfortunately Emma is the only survivor of the plane crash and she is eventually air lifted off the island by the military following some trouble with the locals. An unlikely attraction begins to form between Emma and Ryan, the SEAL who is by her side throughout the rescue.
Back home, Emma is not content with the official cause of the crash as they are citing pilot error. Emma puts her life at risk by asking too many questions and once again finds Ryan protecting her.
Ryan seems to go back and forth in terms of dealing with his attraction to Emma. On one hand he tries to keep a distance because she was part of his mission but on the other he can't deny the strong attraction they have for one another.
Edge of Surrender
I have very mixed reviews about this book. Like the first one in the series, this book is incredibly short: I finished the entire book in less than 2 hours.
Part two picks up right where part one left off: Emma has been kidnapped and Ryan needs to save her. I enjoyed the first half of this book; the chemistry, the drama, the hot sex scenes....all of it was great.
However, the second half of the book was disappointing. It ended too fast and too soon; leaving too many issues unresolved. The conclusion of the plane crash and kidnapping all seemed to happen too fast and everything fit together too easy. Plus the timing of it just seems to perfect: the issues are resolved the day before Ryan needs to leave on another mission?
There is no closure: there's never a conversation with Emma and her father about what happened, no real closure or even compassion from him about what she went through. What happens when Ryan leaves the next morning? How do they make it work? There's no conversation about how their relationship will work long term; just Ryan saying that he is going to come back when he is stateside.
10% of this book is a preview of a book in another series by the same author.
If this is the part of a series (it's unclear), I like the idea of reading about Jake and Alexa. However, I encourage the author to write longer books and not break them into two books just to sell more copies. I would also encourage her to take her time and tie up all the lose ends.
These are great fast reads, from the author of the Tracers series. This is a series of novellas, and is different from Tracers in the fact that it is more action and excitement instead of suspense and mystery, but sometimes that what I want and I will happily continue to read this series.
I loved the first two books in this series. I hope that there are many more to come. Great Characters and well crafted story line. Will recommend it to all of my romance and mystery readers
Lauren Griffin has done a great job with this romance. Good intriguing storyline
OMG!! Was thrilled to be selected to read this, have LOVED her Tracers series and this Crew series is even better! My book boyfriends overfloweth!
What can I say but exciting, fast, and sexy. Ryan the hot Alpha Crew team leader takes the word alpha to a whole knew level and when he meets and is sent to rescue Emma; more than sparks fly. The have a combustible relationship that leads to them both discovering what they really want and need in life. This two book special was a fast enjoyable read that makes me hungry for more. Thank you NetGalley and Laura Griffin for allowing me to read and leave and honest review of this book.
The Mission Begins: At the Edge and Edge of Surrender in one complete book.
The Mission Begins: At the Edge and Edge of Surrender fits perfectly into the romantic suspense genre.
It's the first book of Laura Griffin's that I have read but I don't think it will be the last.
Ever since I discovered Suzanne Brockmann's Tall, Dark and Deadly series and her Troubleshooters Inc. series, I've had a bit of a thing for hot as Hades, alpha Navy Seal men and I've been hooked on books featuring Navy Seals ever since.
I think that fans of Suzanne Brockmann's and fans of Monica McCarty's soon to be published The Lost Platoon series will enjoy this new Alpha Crew series by Laura Griffin.
At the Edge begins when the plane Emma Wright is in is shot down over the Philippine Jungle and she's forced to survive on her own until rescue arrives in the form of an ultra-elite Seal team led by Alpha Crew team leader, Ryan Owen.
The books moves along at a steady pace and fits a great amount of detail into the short novella length first part of the book as we watch the romance beginning to unfold between Emma and Owen. But we're not the only ones watching - somebody doesn't want Emma to find out why her plane went down.
Although the first part ends in a cliffhanger, it's no worry because this book has the second part as well. You can dig right into Edge of Surrender and find out what happens next.
I'm not going to tell you what happens next in the story as I don't want to spoil it, but let's just say that while some questions are answered, more are raised.
I look forward to reading more of this author who just got added to my automatic one-click list
An arc of this book was generously provided to me by Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review
At the Edge is the start of the Alpha Crew series and brings us Emma Wright and the leader of the Alpha Crew Lt. Ryan Owen. When the plane Emma is on crashes, Ryan and he team are sent in to rescue any survivors. This story continues in Edge of Surrender where it is discovered the crash wasn’t an accident. Ryan will do anything to keep Emma protected, but when he causes her to question his trust she leaves. Now alone and in danger will Ryan and his crew get to her in time and will she forgive him and let him help to find the truth and keep her safe. I look forward to reading more
Laura Griffin is a talented author that adds in a few twists to keep you on your toes and a brilliant ending that makes you want more from this author. Enjoyable and great to read for a fantastic getaway from the world. Can't wait for more by this author. Would recommend to everyone
I reviewed this earlier when under two separate covers and found that I really enjoyed this series. While I was frustrated with book two and only gave it three stars I really enjoyed book two. Now, I've read book three and love the series.
Excellent short and action packed, start to an exciting series. From the 1st chapter I was captivated and intrigued. On the edge of my seat, reading At the Edge, as the scenes just flew by. Lol. Emma is a lone survivor as the plane she was on, crashes in the jungles of the Philippines. Lt. Ryan Owen and 3 other members of the Alpha Crew are tasked on bringing back any survivors. Ryan and Emma have intense chemistry and even after Emma is rescued and returned safely home, she can't stop thinking about Ryan and what happened with the plane crash. Her continued investigation has led to someone trying to kill her and Ruan trying to protect her. This book does end in a cliffy and I am on to reading Edge of Surrender!!!!! Loving it so far!
In the 2nd book of this exciting series, Edge of Surrender, we have the conclusion to Emma & Ryan's story. This picks up after Emma has been kidnapped and Ryan does not know who took her. Another short quick read, packed with action and hot sex. The bad guys are caught, all nice and fast. Emma and Ryan admit their love for each other. The story is well written, it just seems really abrupt at the end, especially since Ryan is leaving on another mission and he and Emma are going to make the long distance relationship work between them. Not a bad read but it could have been fleshed out more. Together I give the books 4.5 stars!!!!
The story starts with a bang: plane crash, unexpected twist, good character set-up. Then it leads into what I thought was going to be a typical "Laura Griffin-tense-well-written-thriller".
However, this is "Laura-Griffin-lite". There are lots of chases and intimate scenes, but little actual investigation and crime-solving. Emma, the protagonist, has the whole thing figured out so there is really no crime-solving. The ending comes about abruptly and through no crime-solving on Emma's part. Instead, I had the feeling Ms Griffin reached the allotted number of written pages so she wrapped it up as fast as possible.
This version features two novellas joined together in one book. Good thing or the rating would have gone down another star. I don't go for those money-grabbing cliffhangers that keep continuing would should have been one novel.
A big Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery/Threshold books for the ARC for my honest review. This is the first one in this series that I have read. I liked it but thought the transition between Part 1 and Part 2 could have been a lot better..very abrupt. I rate this a 3.75. It was a crazy read...it has a plane crash, she gets kidnapped, shot at...and the list goes on. Wild ride. If you enjoy intrigue and special ops this is for you.
This is the first book(s) I have read by Laura Griffin but this book sounded interesting so I couldn't pass up the chance to read this one.
This is the first two books in The Alpha Crew series and it is action packed. I found I couldn't stop reading this book and because the book is just 272 pages I was able to read it all in one afternoon.
I give this 4 out of 5.
I have read a couple of this author’s Tracers series books and loved them, so I thought I’d try this book. IMO, not the same caliber of books.
Emma Wright’s plane goes down in the jungle of one of the Philippine Islands. Alpha Crew is sent in to retrieve the passengers.
Emma’s character is a mixture of brash and immature. She’s headstrong and isn’t afraid to use her connections to open doors to find answers to her questions to clear a friend’s name. Yet, she acts completely immature and puts herself at risk when Ryan does something she asked him not to do.
Ryan is team leader for Alpha Crew and worked very hard to get there. He is drawn to Emma from the moment he sets eyes on her file photo.
When trouble follows Emma home because she refuses to let a friend take the fall for the plane crash, Ryan rushes to protect her.
Didn’t really feel the connection between these two. Sex feels like it’s used as a filler. There isn’t much background given on either main character. There is a brief introduction to the other members of Alpha Crew. The story ends with an HFN. The series is just getting started. I hope that means we continue to see these characters develop because there are so many questions still about these two.
This is books 1 and 2 together that make up the whole book of Emma and Ryan’s story. I am not a fan of cliffhangers, especially when each book is not a full book size. The first book is 122 pages and the second one is 114 pages for a total of 236. These two actually stop at 92% and we get an intro to the next partial book in the series that takes you to the advertised 272 pages. It’s beyond disappointing when an author does this.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.
This book grabbed my attention right from the beginning. I will definitely be telling more friends about this series!
This brings the 2 books together (Alpha Crew 1 and 2) and so hang on, they are action packed!
At The Edge
Crazy good and twisty like a roller coaster ride! This book starts with a bang right from the prologue and then chapter one and then fighting through the rain forest and running for their lives in San Diego.
Edge of Surrender
This book picks up right where part 1 stops and thank goodness for that! I was on the edge of my seat and it was not a comfortable place to be. The twists and turns keep you guessing about what is going on and who is involved and what is going to happen. The chemistry between Ryan and Emma is explosive and makes you cheer for them to find that happy ending. I really recommend this series and hope it continues.
I had read both books previously for review and was thrilled to receive this combined ARC and get the chance to read them again. It was just as thrilling the second time through and I read this in a quick afternoon when I should have been sleeping since I had to work that night.
**Received this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley**
I enjoyed this book. Laura Griffin is one of my favorite authors and this was a new series for me to try. It didn't disappoint. The story between Ryan and Emma was awesome. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspenseful read.
