I've never been a great finisher, I'm really good at starting things but not finishing them. In this book, Jon reassured me that I'm not alone in this. He outlines, through humor and a lot of honesty, that I am not powerless to this habit but I can, in fact, finish! This is an excellent addition to anyone's personal library who has ever dreamed of doing something and lacked the wherewithal to follow through. This is one I will keep handy and read over and over again.
I love the strategies that Jon shares in his book Finish. They are simple but effective. Because of their simplicity, they may sometimes be overlooked as not enough to help someone achieve the results they want, but that's the beauty of trying something a little out-of-the-box to reach our goals.
This is the perfect book to read as you think about what you want to accomplish in the new year. Nonfiction has been an acquired taste for me, and I prefer it to have heavy doses of humor and wit. I also generally hate advice about reaching goals because I am lazy and non-commital (though after reading the book I can see that perfectionism is a big part of the problem). Finish did not disappoint. Practical, research-based ideas peppered with humorous examples made this enjoyable AND helpful!
This is not just my most-loved business/self-help book of all time, it’s also my most-gifted book. Finish helped me so much that anytime I see a friend struggling with a goal, I buy them a copy. I’ve sent Finish to people in my home state of Pennsylvania, across the country to my bestie in California, and to two dear friends north of the border in Canada—and they’ve all agreed that this book is deeply impactful.
Jon Acuff GETS IT, and writes in a way that’s easy to read and digest—which really helps the important takeaways sink in. He’s relatable and infuses all his books with practical tips, encouragement, excellent research, and humor.
I rarely reread books, but have reread this one at least 3 times. I have quotes from this book taped above my desk. It’s helped me in so many ways over the years. Finish doesn’t just deserve 5 stars—I’d give it 10 stars if I could!
I read Finish several years ago and still remember parts of it! This is no small feat! Jon has a great way of teaching you new ways to reach your goals without being preachy or boring. To this day, I continue to ask myself if my next goal needs more time to achieve or if I need to lower the goal. Both are practices he recommends in this book. If you are struggling to reach your goals, whether they be fitness, career or household ones, I recommend reading this book to learn new ways to approach them.
A year and a half later and I am still giving recommendations for this book. Well done, Jon Acuff--this is your best book yet. And the curriculum and courses that are offered alongside this read make it a treasure to the goal-seeking world.
This book is a must-read for anyone who desires to finish a goal of any size! It offers tools and exercises to help defeat perfectionism (which is the enemy of "done") and makes working on goals manageable (and possibly even fun!). I flew through this book and am looking forward to sitting down and completing the action steps (at the end of each chapter) to prepare for my next goal. I am confident that I have everything I need to eliminate any obstacles or fears that might try to keep me from being successful.
I enjoyed this practical and encouraging book! Easy to read - humorous (although Acuff can go a bit overboard at times), it's designed to help you push through and, well, finish. There are common enemies we all face - Acuff identifies them, defangs them, and helps us conquer them. Working applying what I learned to FINISH some projects of my own...
Finish focuses on those goals you have attempted to complete but was sidetracked by life, circumstances, or busyness. The ideas discussed provide an interesting mix of self-help, research based introspection that is missing in many leadership books today. From being led to cut goals in half, determining to be really bad at more peripheral items, all while having fun along the way will lead to a stronger finish. Overall, this isn’t my kind of book. While it offers many easy to understand principles to finishing well, it seems to be lacking in overall depth. If you have read many other books by Acuff, this will not disappoint. His candor and writing style speaks volumes to his desire to see people succeed and hear his voice as your biggest cheerleader along the path to the finish.
Like to start things but never finish? This book is for you! Whether you want to lose weight, write a book, run a marathon, start a business or whatever your goal may be Jon Acuff's book leads you to discover what you most want to finish, and how to get there. Acuff's motivation and humor has you not only believing you can do it but gives you the kick in the pants to take action. His words will have you taking notes and taking action and is my most favorite of his books yet! If you are tired of dreaming and want to "do" - while having fun doing it- this book is for you. Excellent, fun and fast read! I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review. (and the book is so good, I ordered a hard copy as well!)
Jon Acuff's Finish offers a common sense approach to getting things done that finally takes into account the reality of human nature. No stupid slogans or motivational speeches - just an honest look at all of our natural avoidance tactics that keep us from getting things done, even things that we really, really want to do.
Expect humorous anecdotes, real-life examples, and practical suggestions along with the smart sense of humor I came to expect from following the author on social media.
Highly recommended for anyone who has attempted something big only to give up before reaching the finish line. I don't consider myself a perfectionist by any means, but I still benefitted greatly from the author's words. Perfectionist excuses have prevented me from completing one specific goal, and Finish has helped me shine a light on why and what I can to do counter my own efforts to sabotage my own success.
