An enjoyable enough read, even though i struggled with suspension of disbelief. The prologue really caught my attention, but then it switched to Eila and took some time to really get started again. I guess the girl who prefers being a wallflower being so openly chatty and telling her entire life story to the kid selling the jeep. And they were absolutely staunchly broke living in supposed poverty, but there's savings for a jeep for Eila and a European (was it?) vacation for Mae?
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book. Unfortunately it’s not the book for me. DNF @ 23%.
I love this cover. The simplicity is perfect, yet it still does a good job of giving us the feel of the book--kind of mysterious with a little spunk. This is the story of a girl (Eila) who inherits a mansion on the coast. She moves before her senior year of high school and finds a lot of interesting friends who help her as she begins to unearth dangerous family secrets. Raef is new to the school too and seems to be watching out for her, but Eila is equal parts afraid of and drawn to him.
When Eila and her guardian Mae are told that they have been given a home in the Cape Cod area they are relieved and are hopeful for a new start. What Eila begins to discover, though, is that her new town, friends and home are filled with more questions than answers... even to the point of raising questions about who Eila really is. Finding out that you might not really be who you thought you were would be hard enough, but what it you begin to question your humanity?
And are there people after her?
This was a good book. I think that the rest of the series is probably going to be just as great. The reason that I said that it was just "okay" and not that "I loved it" or "really liked it" is because I finished this book three days ago (and have since started and finished another book) but when i went to write the review for it this afternoon I couldn't remember anything about it. I did remember after reviewing the synopsis but that usually is not a problem for me.
I think that I will be reading some of the following books in this series, just because I did connect with the characters (after my reminder) and want to know how things work out with Eila and Raef... how Eila continues to grow into her new identity... and I'm interested in finding out how this thing ends!
This book is completely out of my comfort zone for what I would normally read. With that being said, I really enjoyed this book. The character development is wonderful and the story is intriguing enough to make it difficult to put the book down. I was quite happy to learn that there are other books in this series and have already purchased the second book, so that I can continue to watch this story unfold.
For the most part I enjoyed this book. The concept was unique and the characters were likable, although I think it would have worked better and made more sense if they were older because two teenagers dating 160-year old men and roaming around with virtually no adult supervision is just creepy. My main problem was that the first part of the book told a great story and built suspense that just was not explained well in the end. The other issue was the over-the-top insta-love, which nearly made me give up and not finish it.
Eila (pronounced EYE-la) is an orphan, who lives with Mae, her mothers best friend, in a rundown house. Mae is working several jobs just to keep food on the table.
So when a mysterious benefactor buys Elia's old family home on Cape Cod, and gifts it to Elia, they jump at the chance for a fresh start.
Within days of moving to Cape Cod, Eila is starting to realize that all is not as it seemed.
This book is suited for fans of paranormal novels. This is an interesting take on fallen angels. There are Mortis (soul sucking demons) who are the bad guys, and Lunaterra - descendants of angels, and with special abilities to fight Mortis.
The book was well written, and was engaging. The main downside for me was the insta-attraction/love between two characters... it was very reminiscent of Edward/Bella. Actually it's reminiscent on multiple levels; the trope of a man who is hundreds of years old who falls in love with a 17 year old, has been done to death.
However if your a fan of these tropes, this book would be right up your alley.
There was nothing majority wrong with this story, but unfortunately it was not my cup of tea.
Eila Walker is in danger. She and her guardian, Mae, moved to Eila’s ancestral home in Cape Cod after a mystery donor purchased it for her. Little did Eila know that this charitable act would alter her seemingly normal life forever. After a near death experience of being pushed into the bay and almost being drowned by a Mortis, her new friends who all have secrets themselves, M.J., Ana, Raef and Kian explain about her past and her future. The Mortis (soul-less humans surviving off the life-force of others) are trying to kill Eila, the last Lunaterra (the only thing a Mortis fears).
The plot has twists and turns with plenty of teen angst, humor and romance. The characters are well-developed except I was hoping to find out more about the bitchy Nikki Shae and her PomPom Mustang Gang. Maybe in the next book.
This book took me by surprise. It was easy to get pulled into the story, I liked the characters - aside from a certain Gypsy - and I even laughed a few times. Once I started I couldn't stop reading and now I have to get my hands on book #2 asap. There are so much more I want to know about the world of the Lunaterra and Mortis and I want a happy ending for Raef and Eila. And Kian and Ana, too. Oh, and I want a dog called Marsh! I would call this a success in finding a new YA story worth reading. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Wicked Whale!
What a unique, fascinating, and entertaining read!
Initially, when I first started the novel I was getting some serious Twilight vibes as Eila was the new girl in town with this mysterious, magical, broody, and protective male. The instant love between Elia and Raef had me a little apprehensive about the rest of the story but then the story got more and more adventurous and intriguing that I couldn't put it down!
Let me just say that I loved the motley crew of the main characters. Seriously it was like a cast of all my favourite mystical creatures with superpowers....all in one group. Plus, MJ. He definitely had me laughing out loud at times because of his one liners. He probably was one of my favourite characters.
Also, the story. I don't think I really have read a story like this one before. It was unique, it was refreshing, and it had me sitting in anticipation throughout. I am not kidding. I read this in one day because I couldn't put it down and wanted to read more. The ending was also very well done and I'm excited to read more (if I can hunt down a copy of the sequel). Definitely a worthwhile read and don't be surprised if you end up reading it in one sitting!
**Thank you to the publisher for supplying me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
I loved this one the story, charaters and world building are done perfectly. The paranormal elements and heartbreaking romance are cleverly intertwined in this tale of a damaged hero and resilient heroine. I can't wait to read more from this talented author, which thank God I don't have to wait since there are 2 others already published in the series.
Wow, wow, wow! I loved this book so much that I immediately read book 2 and then immediately ordered book 3. It looks like there may be more in the series after book 3? I will be telling readers about this page turning series! My only comment is from an editor standpoint. and is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. There were many instances in this book where author used "I" when "me" would have been correct. When it is the subject of the action, "I" is appropriate, but when it is the object then "me" should be used. Sorry your editor did not notice this. The fact that I loved the book, given the grammar error says a lot.
