This is so much more than a simple cookbook. Yes, it does have plenty of delicious, inspiring recipes. But it is also a laugh out loud, smirk of snarkiness in the face of a broken heart. Lighthearted, fun, entertaining, informative and instructive, this is a great addition to any cookbook junkies collection (of which I am one), for the dessert addict and for the brokenhearted that could use a pick me up.
I thought this cookbook was pretty clever and super cool. The recipes and pictures all look amazing, the author is funny and witty (most of the recipe titles are puns), and all the graphics/illustrations were really well done. I actually want to buy a physical copy at some point. Each recipe is well explained, and has a difficulty rating and funny commentary on the instructions. If you like baking, this is full of great looking recipes and is fun on top of that. Its pretty unique, and I really liked it.
Full disclosure: I haven't actually baked anything from this book yet, AND I'm in a happy, healthy relationship of many years. Seems like this book isn't really for me, right?
BUT I LOVED IT. It's chock(olate)-full of wit, food puns ("it takes a latte balls"), bright fun scribble-illustrations, and gorgeous full-color photos of delicious-looking indulgences.
The book is organized thusly:
1. "Go Ahead and BITE ME-size Treats" -- cookies, bars, and balls
2. "Forgetting you was a PIECE OF CAKE" -- cakes, obviously, and cupcakes
3. "I Never KNEADED You Anyway" -- breads & pastries
4. "Buh-bye, SWEET STUFF" -- candies, creams, etc.
A couple of the recipes that caught my eye are gingersnaps dipped in homemade lemon curd, and cannoli waffles. Looking forward to trying these out!
More importantly, I think this would be a really great gift to give someone who's had a rough breakup. It talks about taking out your aggression through baking, which is probably the most positive channeling I can imagine! I really think it might be a fun way to work through relationship issues, and even if they don't end up baking, it's still a really fun read that somehow seems like it would cheer you up while it's sympathizing with you.
Hats off for a vibrant, creative cookbook!
Sweet Revenge: Passive-Aggressive Desserts for Your Exes & Enemies is a super fun cookbook. I loved the picture, recipe titles and other fun things included. I sat down with my fourteen year old son and we picked two recipes to make. My son loves cannolis, so I Cannoli Be Happy When You're Dead was the first recipe we tried. OMG, this one was super yummy. We did use the shortcut and used toaster waffles instead of making our own. This one was a major hit with the family and we made then for breakfast both Saturday and Sunday. The other recipe we tried was You're The Crumb Of the Earth. We didn't have the correct size pan for this one. It called for a 9 x 9 inch baking pan, we used an 8 x 8 inch pan and it came out fine. Again this one was a hit. The streusel topping was really good, I had to push some hands away from eating it from the bowl before putting it on the batter. The recipes are easy to read and follow. We will definitely be making so more yummy desserts from this book.
The best after breakup book I've ever read. Fun, hilarious, tasty, healing and yet fill the wounded heart with satisfaction. I tried 6 different recipes all were very good, easy and well written out. This is the book I'm buying my broken hearted friends, it's perfect. Passive aggressive delightful comments and recipes. Winner 6 stars
I was immediately drawn to this book by the book cover. I can't help it. I am slightly superficial when picking books. Then I read the title and new I had to have a copy of this book. I would like to think that I have ended any situations with my exes on pretty good terms but the humor of baking revenge desserts was too much for me to ignore. The book is broken up into sections named things like " I never Kneaded you anyway" and "Forgetting you was a piece of cake". The recipes have really fun names and the pictures are gorgeous. I would pick a copy of this up for all my friends who have ever gone through any break-ups whether with significant others or friends. This book is a much healthier way to deal with a difficult situation or betrayal as opposed to keying cars or fits of hysteria. And.....the recipes are super easy to follow and delicious!
Than you NetGalley for the chance to review this awesome book!
You can grab a copy on Amazon and even take a peek inside the first few pages of the book.
Loved this collection. There was a fine balance between attitude and information. For those looking for some sweet recipes with a twist, this will be the perfect cookbook to flip through. I believe there can be a fine line between being kitschy and this book does not cross this line. Would recommend for any cookbook collection.
If you’re a teen girl who likes to cook then look no further. This book will make you laugh while your tastebuds water. Full to the brim with goofy puns and crazy recipes, this is a book you’ll be able to enjoy flipping through over and over again.
Thank you the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a review copy.
The author explains her point of view in “Revenge Is Best Served” and I have to admit…it actually made me cry-in a GOOD way. She makes great points about what to do with the energy we sometimes misuse because we might be feeling THAT angry at someone else. Why not do something more constructive with it, all in the name of SWEET love!
I tried out two of the recipes: You're Driving Me Bananas" (my kids are obsessed with the frosting on these) and "Fruck Off", which actually impressed my European friends who exclaimed, "This could be served in a restaurant!!!"
I highly recommend this fun and adventurous baking book!
I received this ARC from Netgalley. It seemed like an interesting premise. Unfortunately, neither the recipes nor the writing held my attention. It was an entertaining premise.
This is a cute book full of punny recipes. The recipes look pretty tasty but the puns can border painful.
This is a kickass cookbook! The recipes are simple and easy. They can easily be made vegan if needed. The stories which accompany the recipes are everything! This reminded me why I love cookbooks. I wish there were more out there like this.
This book was surprisingly entertaining for a cooking book. It gives a whole new meaning to the kill them with kindness, but I guess in this case it would be kill them with kindness and sugar. My favorite recipe was the Pumpkin Spice Latte balls. They seemed really easy to make and coffee in the form of a dessert is always a good thing. I am not sure if I would want to share these with someone who wronged me, I feel as if it was too good for them!
There are some astonishingly crazy recipes in this book. I was expecting a little more of the self-help side based on the description but was honestly pleased not to find it. Some of these recipes I will be trying, others I don't think I'll ever work up the courage (so much do to with flaming Cheetos). I can see teens getting into this recipe book and using it to ignite some really creative cooking programs.
Switch Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Sweet Revenge: Passive-Aggressive Desserts for Your Exes & Enemies. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
This cookbook takes readers to a different level while providing delicious recipes for fabulous treats. From cookies, to cakes, to breads, and finally to candies, the author has given countless recipes to tease the taste buds. Heather Kim has a sense of humor, one that comes out in the introduction. She points out, up front, that this is a cookbook and then backs up her statement with delicious, homemade desserts.
Sweet Revenge is highly visual, from the color pages to the photographs that accompany many of the recipes. I love the little quips, tip boxes, and sassy words that dot the pages, but the recipes themselves are the standouts. Kiss my Molasses aka Molasses Gingersnaps with Lemon Curd features homemade cookies with a delectable and tangy curd filling (pp. 32-33). You're the Devil Food Cake aka Devil's Food Cake with Chocolate Frosting & Brownie-Streusel Crunch (pp. 72-75) has many different components, but the finished product will make chocolate lovers ask for seconds. I Wish You Were Bread aka Milk Bread Rolls (& Next-day Griddle Toast) are delicious and the additional recipe for leftovers is a smart way to use the excess (pp. 114-115). The creativity level is off the charts with Go Fudge Yourself aka Mackinac Island Chocolate Fudge with White Chocolate Candied Ramen (pp. 158-160).
This cookbook would make a great gift to a friend or loved one with a recent breakup or for someone with a great sense of humor. The biggest piece of advice I can give for Sweet Revenge is to not discount it for the name, as the author has some seriously good dessert recipes that are sinfully delicious. With unique flavor combinations that seem to work, Sweet Revenge is definitely a cookbook for dessert foodies.
This is not your average cookbook! I loved how witty everything was. I didn't make any of the recipes yet, but there are quite a few I have been wanting to try. I love all the colors that are used and the illustrations/graphics.
There is so much pure, raw humor in this cookbook that it makes cooking even more of an enjoyable experience. While I'm an avid reader and books are a huge part of my life, baking is my first love.. I've been baking with my mom and grandmother for as long as I can remember, so seeing these creative and delicious treats packaged into this visually stunning cookbook, I knew it would be the one for me. I love cookbooks that are personal, where you can clearly feel the inspiration from the chef, and Sweet Revenge is full of personality. I love the different categories for recipes, it makes finding the perfect sweet for your need easy. My favorite recipes were the molasses cookie, the butterfinger flake bars, cannoli waffles, and the cinco leches sheet cakes. I can't wait to try them all!
5.0 out of 5 stars I Just Love This Book! ByJ. Russellon December 29, 2017 Format: Paperback
Any woman who's ever dated should own this book. Not to say that a man who cooks can't enjoy it, but Sweet Revenge is female through and through. Notwithstanding some great recipes, this book is LOL hilarious, wickedly clever and deeply satisfying on so many levels. Chapters like "Grab Life by the Milk Balls", "Forgetting You Was a Piece of Cake" and "I Never Kneaded You Anyway" are perfect to inspire and cheer ... it's the perfect gift after a bad break-up. Beautifully illustrated (love the knuckle marks in the cookie dough) and sprinkled with double entendres, Sweet Revenge enchants.
An interesting attempt to make a different kind of cook book, but unfortunately one that didn't really work for me. I guess I'm not passive aggressive enough!
The recipes contained within are really great, and I made a few of them myself to the delight of my nearest and dearest. The thought of making them for someone I no longer like seems a bit strange to me. Maybe I'm more of a "draw the line, move on, live your best life" kind of person!
In summary, a great cook book, but a really weird concept that just didn't do it for me.
