Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins Press for a copy of this delightful book. I've just spent a cosy evening reading it. A real feel good romance where the main characters and their closely linked families are so likeable that you almost feel that you are part of the family. Having had bad experiences previously in their lives, the main characters fight against their fears and the result is a very good romance. Well worth reading
This book has both on-screen sex and cursing (including f-bombs that start almost on the first page). If those things aren't your jam you might want to skip this one. This book is number two in a series and I have to be honest, I think not reading the first book took away from this one because there were so many names that it was impossible to keep everyone and their relationships straight. (Lou isn't Mina's mom but she *is* Faith's mom, and their dad used to be with Emma who is Mina's mom but she left her daughter behind to take photos around the world and really has no bearing on this book but gets name-dropped a lot. Grey is their dad but he is dead and now Lou is dating Angie's dad Seth which makes Angie hate Faith and Mina for being Harpers even though her anger is about Lou dating her dad and Mina isn't even blood-related to Lou...I have to be honest, it was so convoluted that I gave up trying to figure it out.
I really, really struggled with this book. It kills me to not finish a book so I stuck with this one just hoping it would get more interesting, but it never really did. The writing was good structurally, and this story had a ton of potential, but it just fell short. Every chance that this book had to be interesting (Adam's death, the entire Angie plot line, Will's fear of the water, Mina's painting, Mina's art show both in general and the secret getting out, Will & Mina's part in organizing the festival, the drama with the brother, the fire) all just fizzled out without actually doing anything. It felt like Will and Mina spent more time apart in this book instead of getting to know each other than they did together and although there was a ton of potential for interesting things to happen, nothing really does and that was very disappointing.
I was given an ARC of this story by the publisher and was under no obligation to write this review.
“A Season of You” is book two in the Cloud Bay series by Emma Douglas and features Mina Harper and Will Fraser, both who we met briefly in book one – “Nee You Now”.
Mina, a widow, believes she loved, married, and lost the love of her life, so when Will Fraser, owner of the local bar Salt Devil comes to her rescue the last thing on her mind is letting herself be attracted to him.
Will, however, has had an interest in Mina since the first time he’d seen her when he arrived in Lansing. Now, with her baking him ‘thank you’ cookies and inviting him and his brother to the Harper family Thanksgiving, Will sees his chance to be with Mina while also knowing he has to go slow. Hence, the ‘project’.
Mina and Will have a tender yet sizzling attraction that has you pulling for these two to overcome their obstacles and for Will to win Mina’s heart.
Ms. Douglas handles Mina’s grief with sensitivity and “A Season of You” is a beautiful story about overcoming fear and allowing one’s heart to love again.
After having read the eARC of the first book in the Cloud Bay series (Need You Now) courtesy of St Martin's Press, I couldn't wait to get a copy of A Season of You, which is the second book.
Where Faith Harper was the main character in Need You Now, A Season of You focuses on Mina, her sister. I was already familiar with Lansing Island, Cloud Bay and much of the characters' backgrounds, so I was able to concentrate on the story. Mina is the only one of the Harper siblings who is not a musician. Instead, she paints by day and works at the island's Search and Rescue station at night.
Will Fraser owns the town's whiskey distillery along with his brother Stefan. He's had feelings for Mina through her marriage to Adam and still does. Adam's death doesn't change that. Things get hot between them during Thanksgiving and New Year. A very sweet story.
Thanks to Emma Douglas and St Martin's Press for this ARC. Looking forward to book 3.
I thoroughly enjoyed my trip back to Lansing and Will and Mina's story. This Cloud Bay Novel was set in the background of Christmas, and was all the more poignant because of the issues that Mina deals with being a very young widow. Mina taught Will to believe in love at first sight, and the growth and the heartache they both go through to recognize that love makes for an engaging love story. I skipped over the graphic sex and just enjoyed the Christmas miracle.
Will Fraser has longed for a chance with Mina Harper since the day she first captured his attention, but there was always something keeping him from having that chance. So for the last five years he has bided his time, never giving up hope, that one day that chance might finally come along... and now it has, he just has to figure how to convince her to give love another shot.
Mina Harper had everything she ever wanted, the love of a good man, and a happy life, then a drunk driver took it all away, and she has been a shell of the woman she once was, since that day. She is certain love will never come her way again, and if by miracle it happens to find a way into her life, she isn't so sure she would welcome it. But then a shared moment with her friend Will spawns some unexpected feelings... feelings that have her reconsidering her thoughts against love!
A Season Of You is sure to inspire readers, renew their faith in second chances and put them in the holiday spirit! This charming read, and it's well crafted characters, left my heart full and happy... it was such an enjoyable first read. The delicate story line was full of moments that had me near tears, moments that tugged on my heartstrings, and moments that left me smiling from ear to ear. Highly recommend this one for anyone who is in the mood for a well written holiday themed read, it's sure to give you just what your looking for ... and possibly more!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
I thoroughly enjoyed this return to Cloud Bay. The characters and story are full of emotion and you are drawn into their daily lives with such ease you don't want to leave once you've reached the end of the book.
I look forward to reading the next instalment as soon as possible.
How do you breakthrough someone’s shield when they’ve lost two people they loved dearly in their young lives? A Season Of You by Emma Douglas is an emotional story on many levels and to be honest a bit heavy, but it was well written and I did enjoy it even if it did lack the fun and excitement of the first book in their series.
At twenty-three Mina Harper has experienced more loss than someone her age should have, she lost her father, an alcoholic once famous rock star, and her husband to a drunk driver. For the last few years she has been trying to cope and find herself and painting has been her salvation. With an upcoming art show in which she is not using her father’s famous last name, but her mother’s maiden name, she wants to be known for her talent not what her father’s name can do for her. Volunteering for the island’s search and rescue keeps her busy and her beloved dog, Stewie, keeps her company along with her sister Faith and Lou, her step-mom who is more like a real mom. Other than that Mina doesn’t really do friends and she doesn’t date, she appreciates her solitude.
Will Fraser and his brother are fairly new residents to the island and have built a name for themselves with their bar, The Salt Devil Distillery, while waiting for their first batch of whiskey to finish aging that will hopefully lead to bigger and better things. For years he’s admired Mina from afar, seeing her happy with her husband and grieving after he was gone and he’s held back because he didn’t want to push her before she was ready, but when a freak accident gives him an opportunity to be there for her he takes it and realizes that the in person Mina is all that he could ever hope for if he can just break through her fortress.
This was an intense and complicated story with Will basically letting Mina set the parameters and him hoping to expand them as they went along. I’ll admit I hated that Will was so invested and was willing to let Mina discount what he knew he wanted, but I could also understand that he had hope he would be willing to make her see how good they were together. With Will owning a bar and a distillery and Mina losing both her dad and her husband to alcohol related deaths, it was an uphill battle. The thing was that time and time again Will showed Mina that he wasn’t just about the bar or about alcohol, that there were many facets to his life and that he understood her insecurities and respected her feelings.
A lot of this book centered around the Lansing Island Christmas Festival, the brainchild of the mayor, Angie, who is somewhat of a nemesis to the Harper family and from what anyone can tell it has to do with her father dating Lou, Mina’s step mom, but I have my suspicions it is way more than that and we might find that out in the next book. I found this book to be a little slower than the first one, not quite as exciting despite a couple of intense situations both Will and Mina are involved in and thus it just didn’t keep me as thoroughly engage, but it didn’t keep me from finishing and enjoying it.
A determined hero, a reluctant heroine, the holiday season, and lots of turmoil all wrapped up made A Season of You an unconventional holiday romance.
A Season Of You by Emma Douglas is a great book to get you in the Christmas spirit. Ms Douglas has given us a well-written book that will warm your heart. This is a fairly short read, a great choice for those with limited time for reading. The characters in this book are amazing, and perfect for this story. Mina has suffered the loss of her father and husband. Will is struggling to start a new business that Mina is against. Mina and Will's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice and holiday hope. I enjoyed reading A Season Of You and look forward to reading more from Emma Douglas in the future. A Season Of You is book 2 of the Cloud Bay Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a standalone.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
There is something endearing about small towns, but add in Christmas and the results are magical!!
Will Fraser has had a secret crush on Mina since he moved to Cloud Bay years ago. After spotting Mina slip and fall one evening, Will becomes an official knight and shinning armor. Will being the awesome guy that he is, not only helps Mina, but also takes care of her dog as well. Not sure if his feelings would be reciprocated, Will decides not to let her know how he feels. But everything changes when Mina asks Will if it would be okay if she drew/sketched him!!!!
Mina Harper was windowed a couple of years ago which left her heart shattered. Since losing her husband, Mina hasn't felt the urge or need to put herself out there again. Being satisfied in her volunteerism and painting, Mina thinks she's good to live alone forever. Her world completely changes when Will saves her!! Mina feel a sparks that she hasn't felt since before her husband passed and it freaks her out!! What does she do with these feelings?!!?? Has her heart healed enough to open herself up again?!? Could she have a causal relationship with Will, or scarer yet, could she have "more"?!!??
I enjoyed every second of this novel. The storyline was entertaining and the characters are fantastic. With just two book into this series, I can already tell that I will absolutely be reading every installment Emma Douglas comes out with. I have fallen in love with the little California town of Cloud Bay and all of it's inhabitants! If you are looking for a great romance novel with the added magic of Christmas, than you need to 1-click this 4.5 star book!! I am really looking forward to the next book in the Cloud Bay series (No Place Like You) which is due to release in early December!
received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
Will has loved Mina from afar for five years, through her short marriage and then three years of widowhood. When he rescues her after an accident, they gradually get to know one another better in the run up to Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This was a sweet story with likeable characters and a good sense of location, but not a lot really happened. There was a fair amount of back story surrounding Mina's father, the rock festival the family administers, Mina's marriage and so on, which was described in a slightly repetitive way throughout the book. I see that this is number two in a series, but it read as if I had missed out on many previous instalments: Grey had been married to Emma, but was then married to Lou, who is now with Seth, who is Angie's father etc etc.
Angie provided the only real drama in the story, although her antagonism fizzled out, and we were back to "can Mina risk her heart again"? I didn't find this story very original, but it was enjoyable and very Christmassy.
