This contemporary romantic comedy hooked me with the ‘stuck in an elevator’ meet cute. How perfect is that?! I thoroughly enjoyed this story of two professionals trying to fit a somewhat unconventional relationship into their seemingly busy lives due to the distances between their homes, jobs, and even race. The heroine is such a spunky character and when she collides with the hero who is afraid of commitment, sparks definitely fly. The characters’ banter is both creative and comedic, without being cheesy. I love the fact that they both work hard to earn their HEA. This is, hands down, one of the best written romantic comedies of the year and I cannot recommend it enough to readers everywhere.
I couldn't wait for this to show up on Netgalley after it seemed like all my favorite twitter users were tweeting about how great it was. Now I'm questioning their tastes because this book was really...not that good. I never felt like I really knew the characters & therefore didn't care that much about them. The relationship felt forced & while I definitely don't have a problem with sex in books-- all they did the entire 320 pages was have sex, Drew pawing at Alexa's boob (oh my god, how many times was he doing something to her boob, it was so not a turn on), or eating out. I don't see how anyone could afford to eat that much take out *and* afford plane tickets every single weekend.
There also wasn't really a plot climax-- they have a boring not-at-all dramatic fight & then they make up and the book is over. What was the point of it all.
The biracial coupling was cool & I'd love to read more from that perspective, but I think I was hoping to be swept off my feet by The Wedding Date & instead fell flat.
This was a cute, light romance novel and I'd love to see more from the author.
I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. From the meet-cute to the romantic happy ending, I could not put this book down. The characters are smart, relatable, and well-rounded. The main character is a smart, successful, quirky black woman, which we do not see nearly enough of in romance novels. I can't recommend this book highly enough!
Fun weekend read with likable characters and plenty of romance.
The Wedding Date is a sweet, charming and swoon-worthy romance. I fell in love with the characters from the very first meeting. The sparks were instant and the banter was just so easy and so entertaining. I just knew this was going to be a read that would sweep me off of my feet.
I loved the idea behind this story. I am a total sucker for fake relationship romances and I truly loved seeing this one develop and turn into something more. The characters are real and flawed in their own ways. The road to happily ever after wasn't an easy one, but definitely one that you can't help but root for.
Overall, I thought this was a really sweet and enjoyable read. It had just the right amount of drama, romance, sexiness and humor. I look forward to checking out more from this author in the future.
I started reading this one as a preview through another book reviewing website and was hooked. It hits all the typical meet cute romantic comedy notes, but with new beats-an interracial relationship and a story that acknowledges these potential difficulties, a heroine with not only an important job that she does ACTUAL WORK at instead of just mooning over the hero..This one was a real treat.
This is the perfect book for a rainy day, a vacation read, or for one of those days when you just need a happy ending. Alexa and Drew were so fun to read about, and you were rooting for them to make it work. It was such a nice change from the norm that they're a biracial couple. That aspect of their relationship definitely wasn't the focus of the book, which in turn made it feel like a more realistic portrayal. I enjoyed this from start to finish and I can't wait to read more from Jasmine Guillory.
Rating ~4.5
This book is a lovely gem. Fun, flirty, romantic, sexy and charming, it is a delight from start to finish. I do not read adult contemporary romances often, but when I do this is what I like to find. It was also great to find a book about an interracial couple with the sort of real-life situations and conflicts that could arise for them.
Alexa Monroe is a smart, strong, fun, honest, independent heroine with all the flaws and insecurities of your everyday woman. She is someone I think we can all relate to in some way.
Drew Nichols is a charming, handsome, intelligent young doctor with a fear of commitment. A genuinely good guy, with a not so great track record of breaking hearts.
The book overall felt like a smart and rather realistic portrayal of an adult relationship. It never forgets to mention that all relationships have ups and downs, it can't all be sweet kisses and delicious donuts. And that to make it over all the bumps in the road, it is important to honest to allow yourself to be open and vulnerable. Because when two people really love each other, they fight for each other, they work through any problems and come out stronger and just as much in love.
Anyways, I adored this book and would definitely recommend it to any of my friends who are fans of adult contemporary romances or maybe even just romantic comedies in general.
To be clear, I don't have a problem with sex in books. I do have a problem with poor communication in books. It makes me really hard to like the characters when they decide to assume things instead of talking. And of course the main characters don't communicate. All they do when they see each other is have sex. This was a shame. In the beginning, I liked the main character. She was smart, knew herself and was willing to push herself. Then instead of sitting the guy down to talk about what kind of relationship they have, she starts second guessing everything and ending things without explanation.
A fun, comtemporary romance with grownups! I've been so immersed in YA that it was refreshing to read the budding romance between Alexa and Drew. I like that she is confident, that he has to deal with his relationship issues, and that it is set in the Bay Area. The passion was off the charts and the race issues well dealt with. Recommended!
What a delight! Had a big smile on my face the whole time! This is really one of the better contemporary romances I've ever read. It's low-key funny with likable characters, realistic drama, and a whole lot of heat.
To be honest, this book was definitely not for me. I tried to get into it, but after 4 chapters, it just didn’t do enough for me. I love plots like this and was really hoping to be swept off my feet, but the writing was cheesy and definitely not my cup of tea. Decided to not finish this one after all.
New author to me.. I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. I will be watching for more books by her.
This is an enjoyable, light read with a few serious moments thrown into the mix. I greatly enjoyed the heroine, Alexa. I would have liked a little more background info on our hero's motivations.
The moment I started reading this book I was hooked. The lead characters are realistic people you want to spend time with. I could not put this book down. I wanted to see how their story would end and finished it in two sittings. Jasmine Guillory has a fan in me - looking forward to her next novel already.
I loved, loved, loved this book! A simple and somewhat un-original premise gets a fresh new look in Jasmine Guillory's hands. I loved that Alexa was an independent career woman who could hold her own and I loved that the author didn't shy away from the issue of race (but didn't make it a focal point either). I could go on and on, but I am excited to be sharing this new author with my library's romance readers. Can't wait for her next book!
Okay, this was adorbs. I am in awe of the way that Guillory took weighty topics and just...incorporated them into this cute little romance novel. (for example, microaggressions and body issues)
Totally recommend.
Alexa and Drew meet on an elevator where they bond over good cheese and a mutual attraction. Their perfect meet cute turns into a last minute date to Drew's ex-girlfriend's wedding which eventually turns into a full blown long distance love affair.
What I liked about The Wedding Date was the biracial relationship. Alexa is black, Drew is white and that dynamic was very well fleshed out. In face the race dynamic is the #1 thing that attracted me to The Wedding Date in the first place. What I didn't like was that the bulk of their conflict was miscommunication. It's a personal pet peeve when a novel's conflict could be resolved if the two main characters would just talk to one another.
Overall this was a good addition to my quest to read more books written by and about people of color. I look forward to reading more by Jasmine Guillory.
