Mary Burton has done it again ! This book features FBI agent Kate and Homicide Detective Theo as they join forces to hunt a serial killer that reenacts heinous crimes . The characterization is very well done . The plot is a well written police procedural with many twists and turns , family drama , depravity and horrific murders . Love this talented author ! I have never read a book of hers that wasn't good . I highly recommend this book if you love a good mystery . Thank you Mary Burton , Joan Schulhafer Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook in exchange for my honest review !
I have been reading Mary Burton for years and she always delivers. There is suspense, a bit of romance and a lot of thrill.
*I won this book through Netgalley for free for my honest opinion*
This was my first time reading a Mary Burton book. Let's just say that she has gained a new reader. It was just the sort of mystery, suspense mixed with romance novel I love to read about. I ESPECIALLY liked that the main female character was short (like me). I hardly ever read about a main female character who are strong independent short women. So that was a refreshing change of pace for me.
Read this book!
This was a Pretty decent romantic suspense. I liked the dynamic between Kate and Theo, and that fact that it was a realistic mutual attraction and respect of each other that could lead to more vs instalove. There were a couple of predictable moments, but otherwise it was a good story.
Mary Burton is now firmly placed as one of my favourite authors. Ever! Kate Hayden is a great character, and maybe we could see more of her in future titles? A great thriller,.
This was a real page turner. While I sometimes get tired of the FBI/cop/etc being hunted. I really enjoyed the twists of this one. Mary Burton did a great job creating characters to get invested in and a killer that was creative & smart.
I really tried to enjoy this book as it's about profilers which is one of my favorite topics but i found it so difficult to like any of the characters. Kate came across bland and uninteresting when i think the author was attempting to make her seem aloof and detached from her job. It just didn't work.
This book was fantastic I loved everything about it. The characters were likeable and the storyline was interesting enough to keep me engaged and wanting more. A hard book to put down. Really well written, a real page turner. Well deserved 5 stars.

This is a stand alone romantic suspense from Mary Burton that is most certainly worth reading.
The characters are really interesting in this story. Kate is being taunted by someone who is copying some of her earlier cases. And Theo is new to the local force. These characters are very real. They are in some interesting situations but are handling it the way I imagine most people would.
I am rarely disappointed by a Mary Burton book and this would be a great book to pick up if you have not read her before.

I have read several romantic suspense novels by Mary Burton. They generally involve a lot of twists and turns. The Last Move is no different. Just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do. The Last Move takes the cake because although some of the things that happen appear to be virtually impossible, they somehow seem believable.
The Last Move is the story of FBI Profiler and Linguist Dr. Kate Hayden. While she is hot on the trail of one serial killer, Dr. Hayden gets pulled into the hunt for another one that’s in her hometown of San Antonio. She is paired with a local veteran Homicide Detective named Theo Mazur who just recently transferred from Chicago to be near his teenage daughter. Kate’s past ends up front and center in the investigation and her demons become very real for her and Mazur. Kate demonstrates her excellent chess skills as she figures out how to bring this sadistic killer to justice. The bar gets raised very high when it appears that there may be multiple killers on the loose. Somehow, in the midst of all the drama, Kate and Mazur find a little time to get between the sheets. They clearly have a connection and it’s electric.
There is so much more to be said about The Last Move, but since it’s a suspense I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. I will say that Mary Burton has yet to disappoint me. She always finds a way to deliver a little shock and awe in each suspense novel. I continue to be a fan of her unpredictable work. I look forward to the next book.
FBI Profiler and linguistics expert, Kate Hayden, is on the trail of the latest serial killer, a man that likes to keep his victims in boxes and only taking them out when he wants to play with them, when she is called away to San Antonio, TX on a new case where a copycat killer is duplicating a murder that she has already solved. The only problem is they already caught the bad guy and he was currently locked up and awaiting trial. Could it be an accomplice or someone else entirely? When a second body is found with an erie resemblence to another case of Kate's, it soon becomes clear that the killer has his sights on her. Partnering up with Theo Mazur, a recent transplant to the San Antonio police force, they both work together to solve the case.
I honestly loved Kate Hayden. She was a strong main character, and a forced to be reckoned with. She was smart and great at her job. She may not have had many people skills, but she was efficient in solving cases, and really cared about the victims. She has her own troubled past which has kept her away from San Antonio for the last seventeen years. Going back, she will have to face what happened to her all those years ago, as well as, help solve the case of a copycat killer.
Theo Mazur has his own troubles. His son passed away at a young age and his marriage soon fell apart. His wife left taking their only daughter and moved from Chicago to San Antonio, TX due to a career move. Hence, the reason why Theo soon followed to be closer to his daughter. Theo would do anything for his teenage daughter and you can see that through his actions that he wants to be involved in her life. One thing I loved about Theo is he did not try to protect or shield Kate, like most alpha heroes would do, to the point where she could not do her job. He knew she was quite capable at her job and they worked together as a team to catch the latest killer.
Mary Burton never ceases to amaze me. There has not been one book of hers that I did not like. THE LAST MOVE is no different nor does it disappoint. It is chock full of twists and turns, the creepiest of villians, and a mystery that will leave you guessing with one hell of a surprise at the end. I did NOT see that one coming. If you have never read a book by Mary Burton, shame on you! This is master storytelling at its finest. Mary Burton knows how to weave a story and suck you in. My suggestion is to leave an entire row on your bookshelf open just for Mary Burton's books scroll through her back book list and buy every single one of them. You will not regret it.
For FBI agent Kate Hayden, catching monsters that stalk the world is what keeps the nightmares at bay in her life. But forced to return to San Antonio over a grisly case, she finds herself teamed up with Detective Mazur as they try to figure out if this is the case of a copycat or if the real Samaritan serieal killer is on the loose. Kate doesn’t think it’s the real killer but as she races after clues and leads, Kate finds herself facing her past in ways she never anticipated. Now as she and Detective Mazur race against time, the killer patiently baits his trap as they keep Kate in the cross-hairs.
I love Mary Burton’s thrillers and this latest one is sure to keep you glued to the pages until the very last explosive page. The story is full of twists and turns that I sure did not see coming and I found myself flipping the pages in my kindle to see where Kate was going next. The climatic showdown between the killer and Kate was unexpected and I was quite amazed at who the killer really was and what was motivating them. Ms. Burton kept the action on high as tension continued to heat up for Kate and the sexual tension between Kate and Detective Mazur was hot. The story is quick and keeps the reader glued to the pages till very end.
If you have read any of this author’s books then you know this is truly a talented storyteller. She creates such complex storylines and some of the most evil of killers in her books it’s amazing I was able to sleep some nights after reading her books. That said, THE LAST MOVE is full of action, mystery and an unlikely of romance that weaves itself along within the pages. I loved Kate even as we slowly find out why she avoids San Antonio and her immediate family, what draws her to the work she does in the FBI and how Detective Mazur gives her something she hasn’t found in a long a time-safety and love. With all that, THE LAST MOVE is one wild ride from start to finish. The characters are complex, intriguing and sometimes downright creepy,
As Kate figures out who the killer is, as she and Detective Mazur follow the breadcrumbs, readers are left on the edge of their seat with anticipation as they get closer to the killer and his final plan. I loved seeing how Kate and Mazur figured out who was behind the killing spree and why they targeted Kate. The twists that happened half way through the story just floored me and I found myself rooting for Kate to get the bad guy. If you enjoy an edge of the seat mystery that will keep you guessing then you will need to grab THE LAST MOVE as soon as you can. I recommend making sure you are fed and whatnot because once you get into the story, you will forget everything else until the last page is read. I am eager to see where Ms. Burton goes next in her books and hope we don’t have to wait long for it.
This is an objective review and not an endorsement
Thrilling! Intriguing!
Well shame on me for not having read a Mary Burton novel before! I am hooked and a huge fan!
Anyone fascinated with mystery, suspense and even romance will love this story. Kate Hayden is fierce, strong and so insightful into the inner workngs of the minds of these criminals that it's scary. Her quirkiness makes her even more charming. While in the pursuit of a crazy killer Kate is pulled away to hunt down a copycat criminal from her past. In San Antonio she partners up with Detective Theo Mazur and chase down lead after lead. Detective Mazur is not only trying to help Agent Hayden track down the killer but also to keep her safe when they realize she is a target herself.
Each twist and turn is more exciting than the last and keeps yo uon edge and involved the entire read.
Great story that I highly recommend.
I received an ARC of this book and enjoyed the intense story. I knew from the point the daughter was introduced and had the same interests as Katie that somewhere along the line she would be taken. Also it bugged me that they found a trace on his car but they never bothered to check the mother’s home. I found myself at times wanting to jump into the book/story to help them solve the case. Excellent book .
The Last Move was a suspenseful, quick-paced and action-packed read and I loved it from start to finish!
FBI agent Kate Hayden catches monsters for a living, which helps keep the nightmares of her violent past at bay. After a new case brings her back to San Antonio, Kate has to work to solve the new case while dealing with the memories of her past. When it becomes apparent this new murder looks to be by a serial killer Kate has already caught, she must determine if she caught the wrong man or if she has a copycat killer on her hands. Soon, another murder is committed in an almost identical fashion to a different case Kate closed and it becomes apparent this killer knows Kate well and has sinister plans for her.
Kate is very committed to her job at the FBI and we see right in the first chapter that she’s willing to do anything to get justice for the victims. I admired Kate’s dedication to her job and how much she cared about putting away the bad guys. While her colleagues at the FBI are used to her, to most people Kate comes across as very abrupt to the point of rudeness. However, Kate simply doesn’t believe in beating around the bush and wants to get right to the point. Kate has difficulty connecting to people, and after learning how an ex-boyfriend killed her father and injured her as well when she was a teenager, I can understand why.
Theo, the homicide detective assigned to the original murder case, is new to the San Antonio police department, being a recent transplant from Chicago, and thus is stuck with shifts and cases no one else wants. Theo left his job at the Chicago police department to move to San Antonio to be closer to his daughter Alyssa, who was moved there by Theo’s ex-wife. I admired Theo’s love and dedication to his daughter and their relationship was one of my favorite aspects of his character.
Kate and Theo work well together on the murder cases. The two have differing styles of investigating which complement each other very well and lead to avenues the other may not have thought of. While Kate can be abrupt, Theo comes across as a friendly guy you wouldn’t mind talking to which certainly helps when questioning people. The romantic subplot isn’t a huge one, but I did enjoy Kate and Theo’s chemistry and bought into their connection. As this book is a standalone, the romance is left a bit open-ended but I like the direction everything was headed.
The murder cases were definitely fascinating and I enjoyed watching everything unfold. We get several scenes from the killer’s point of view and I liked learning their motives. The various cases pulled Kate and Theo in several directions and the author did an amazing job connecting everything and drawing Kate further into the killer’s web.
Overall, The Last Move was engaging, had an intriguing mystery and has me interested in checking out more of this author’s books.
This was such an exhilarating book to read! It can be quite graphic. It was an awesome psychological thriller. There was many twists and turns. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Mary Burton is a master of the written word!
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review by NetGalley.
I've yet to read a book by Burton that I didn't like. Like those books, this one was twisty and suspenseful and full of rich characters.
Kate is a fiercely dedicated FBI agent with little personal life, only partially by choice. She's blunt, lacking in social graces, and works too hard. She's driven in part by events in her past. Theo is a divorced cop who left his long-term police job in Chicago to follow his ex and their daughter to Texas. No, he's not stalking them or being creepy; he just wants to stay in his daughter's life and figures he can best do that by being local. The move means he lost seniority and alienated some of local cops who wanted that position.
When Theo catches a high-profile murder, he doesn't hesitate to call in the FBI when he realizes it could be connected to one of their cases. Kate has doubts but does her due diligence, leaves the case she's working on, and arrives to investigate this new case. Soon, it becomes obvious that the killer lured Kate to Texas and it may have roots in her past. Burton teases us, giving us threads that seem disparate at first but then brings them together into a tight plot where nothing has been left to chance. Oh, it had a few unlikely coincidences but the story was so tight that I didn't mind.
The blurb says "don’t believe everything you see." and I'll second that. Holy Hannah but Burton kept throwing curve balls and weaving intricate webs. The story was a roller coaster ride with surprises around many corners. Not to be forgotten are the characters; they are sharp edged, quirky, and engaging. Kate could come across as cold to people who didn't know her, or had access to her thoughts, while Mazur was sharper than he let on. He had a knack for playing the good ole boy when it suited him, but there was a steel core underneath. There's a romance too but it's secondary to the main story.
"The Last Move" was a thrilling, chilling, and gripping story that kept me swiping the pages on my Kindle.
Mary Burton is one of my favorite go to authors for romantic suspense. I read The Last Move in 2 days! The lives of the characters are closely intertwined and made the plot all the more intense. I know that this title is a stand alone but the characters are so well developed that I’d love to see more of their story in future novels. Kate is strong but vulnerable and Mazur is tough but caring. Great combination. Thanks to Mary Burton as well as her publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my review.
Brutal murders have been occurring, and while in the middle of trying to solve one crime in Utah, Kate Hayden, who is an agent with the FBI, gets a call taking her to San Antonio, which is where her mother and brother live. She hasn't been back since her youth, where tragedy happened early in her life. A murder has been committed along the San Antonio interstate that is like another former crime, but that man is in prison because of her, so it can't be him. Homicide detective Theo Mazur and Kate end up working together. With multiple murderers and victims being involved, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. It was fast paced, scary, and made me cringe in places. The energy of the characters and the writing were exciting. I love the way this author writes and will continue to keep reading her past and future books. [I received an early copy of this book from the author and my opinion is my own.]
FBI agent Kate Hayden catches monsters for a living . While she is chasing one of them who traps his victims in wooden boxes , she receives a call that a note has been left for her on the scene of crime in San Antonio .The problem is that she caught the killer and he was behind bars. Soon another murder occurs and it becomes obvious someone is copying the crimes that Kate has solved. Kate Hayden along with detective Theo Mazur race against time to catch this new deadly killer before he claims anymore victims.
It’s a fast-paced , interesting , stand-alone romantic suspense thriller with a strong female protagonist. A great read which I hope will become a series.
Many thanks to Montlake Romance & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
