I LOVED the illustrations but I found the story confusing. I've read a lot of children's books and this one seems to be unsure of where the story wants to go.
So i am a mum of a 7 year old who has had a bunny since she was born who comes with us everywhere. We both loved this book and she really related to it and its finnally allowed us to presuade her that the bunny should stay at home most of the time. Which is good as shes left it behind in Copenhagen Train Station, A resturant in Italy and without bunny she will not go to sleep. Will be getting this book for some of her younger friends who have simular furry friends and maybe it will help them understand that fur bunnies get sad to and sometimes just want to be played with and sometimes just want to not be lost by there little owners xx
Meet Fluffy. He's soft and lush, and he lives in Mom's sock drawer. You see, he's the backup bunny. Parents, you know the Backup Bunny - the one we've got just in case the Luvvie/Lovey goes missing; the one we hope will stave off the tears. That's exactly what happens when Max misplaces Bunny, and Fluffy's called into service. But Fluffy isn't right! His ears don't feel right - he's too new, he hasn't been loved enough. Imagine how poor Fluffy feels, after waiting all this time to be played with; to be thrown on the floor, hung by his ears on a clothesline, and dunked in the mud - but wait! That's the key! As Max plays with Fluffy, he breaks him in - and before Fluffy realizes it, Bunny's been found, and Fluffy finds himself part of the new Lovey rotation. Kids will love The Backup Bunny because they'll get it: the stress of missing a beloved toy and the frustration of a toy that isn't quite right. The artwork is gentle and soft, with warm browns, and soft blues inviting the reader into a world of stuffed toys, cushiony beds, and soft sock drawers. The endpapers are adorable, with Fluffy hanging out, waiting by himself on the front papers, only to be part of the Max/Bunny group on the back pages. Caregivers will appreciate The Backup Bunny, because we've all been there. Overall, a nice addition to picture book collections, and a fun addition to storytimes where kids bring their own stuffies to cuddle.
We all had that one favorite toy, well mom has a replace too in case it gets lost. Well he's not good enough!! Cute, funny story for the little ones.
Cute story I think a lot of littles and their parents can relate to.
I admit a personal interest in choosing this title; my son had a backup "puppy" for his favorite lovey - yet knew the difference between the two identical toys. "They smell different", he told me. Yet I often personified tbe second toy and wondered how he would feel about being the "spare" toy, wanting just to be loved by his boy. Rayner has perfectly captured a young boy's feelings as well as imaginatively expressed the pov of a toy, with charming results. Twist ending adds humor. A delight that begs to be re-read as a bedtime favorite.
I love this book. It’s so cute and any mom who has had a child be attached to anything knows about the backup. It’s funny which a child will enjoy and it’s simple.
The back up bunny tells the tale in this book. I enjoyed the simple illustrations. It would make a great read for kids in the age group of 2-6. The narration is simple and very easy to understand.
A super sweet story of Fluffy, the backup bunny! Fluffy has been stored away in mom's sock drawer because Max isn't interested in him. Max only wants his favorite bunny with him at all times so Fluffy is in sock drawer jail. One day Max loses his bunny and has a melt-down. Can Fluffy save the day??
I think any young child could relate to Max and his attachment to his favorite comfort toy! My little one always had her blanket (night night) and I had to sneak it away just to launder it!
Max eventually warms up to the idea of a backup bunny and ends up asking for Fluffy to join him in the end. Fluffy has feelings and just wants to be loved too. Children will be enchanted by Max and his antics with his bunnies (and adults too!) I read this in school and the kids listened with their ears perked up!!

4.5 stars.
'The Backup Bunny' was such a refreshing read! The story is told from The Backup Bunny's perspective and in a humorous way that makes this totally enjoyable for children and adults. The Backup Bunny! He is just how all toys are (you have seen 'Toy Story' right?) He wants to be loved by his little kid, so one night when Max can't find his original bunny, mum steps in with The Backup Bunny. At first it goes well....for a few moments that is, until Max realises this is not his REAL bunny and if you know of or have a small child you can guess what happens next. The whole book was great and the illustrations are gorgeous. I highly recommend this as a great bedtime read!
Adorable! Max misplaces his worn bunny but Mom has a backup plan. A new fluffy bunny has been waiting in the sock drawer, longing to be befriended. At first, Max eschews his new companion. But after trial and error, the two become friends. The story is told in first person, from the vantage point of Backup Bunny, an endearing character with a sense of humor. This is a book your children will want to read (and have read to them) over and over. Five stars--for text and illustrations!
The Backup Bunny is a sweet book about a common childhood problem.—losing a lovey. I liked the POV being from the backup toy, not the main toy or the boy. The plot was sort of predictable, but the voice was funny.
I read this to a group of kids who loved it, but didn't ask for it again. That is not a good sign for a book. These kids often ask for a great book to be re-read multiple times and they didn't. Therefore, only 2 stars
I absolutely love the illustrations in this book. You can't hardly read it without smiling. As far as the text, there were places it didn't seem to flow, but it is a very creative story.
A story about a backup bunny who lives in Mom's sock drawer waiting for the chance to stand-in when the real bunny goes missing. And sure enough that time finally happens, only the boy spots him for a fake. And so what will happen? Will the real bunny show up or the stand-in bunny find a place in the boy's heart?
A book sure to entertain kids.
It is bed time and Max cannot find his bunny! Mom's fast thinking saves the day! Or does it? Meet the back up bunny who just longs to be loved and played with! Bunny wants to spend time with Max riding bikes, swinging, and playing dress up instead of being stuck in a sock drawer! If you have ever lost a favorite toy, you will enjoy, The Back Up Bunny!
The Back Up Bunny is a brilliant tale of that situation were a child looses their favourite toy and no other toy will do.
It is beautiful written from the bunny's point of view. The bunny is left in the sock draw until needed and once he has a taste of freedom he really doesn't want to go back but he also doesn't like to see Max upset. So when he finds the first bunny off he goes back to the sock draw. Is there a happy ending....not going to give it away but it will really make a child want more toys in their lives.
A lovely book.
This book is perfect! As a parent with two young daughters I too have a back up bunny so this is definitely a keeper in our library! this book was truly amazing with each page I read.
I really liked this book. The backup bunny goes through all the emotions from sad to hopeful to joy and jealousy. So true to life, with a child being super attached to a favourite toy so others dont get a look in! Brilliant ending when the backup backup bunny appears! For a UK readership I did not like the Americanised Mom. We say Mum here.
This is an adorable book with wonderful illustrations. Any parent, grandparent or even dog owner can relate to that one special toy that can not be replaced. Oh you may think you have a backup plan. Life is not as predictable.
I smiled. I laughed. I will read this again and again.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book for review.
The Backup Bunny narrates the story of a little boy who loses his favourite stuffed animal. As many parents do, they have a backup just in case. He finally gets to come out and be loved, but the boy with have none of it. The Backup does not feel right and he quickly knows that this is not his bunny. He finally decides to play with the backup until it is time to go to bed. This is a cute story that many parents will connect with from either the viewpoint of the child remembering their stuffies, or as an adult whose child has gone through this. It was easy to read as the text chosen, the placement on the page and the illustrations were well laid out. The illustrations are well done and cute to look at. This is a great book to read to children who have lost a favourite toy or just as a bedtime story.
