This was such an extremelly charming adaptation, I can see myself coming back to this version more than once.
Mariah Marsden's adaptation of L.M. Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" masterfully retains the wit, humor, and emotional depth of the original. She perfectly balances whimsy and poignancy, inviting readers of all ages to relive Anne's joy, sorrow, and wonder while evoking nostalgia for longtime fans.
The graphic novel offers a fresh, visually stunning interpretation of Anne's adventures. Brenna Thummler’s expressive, full-color artwork brings the characters and settings of Avonlea to life, capturing the beauty and charm of Montgomery's narrative in vibrant detail. Thummler's illustrations enhance the storytelling, making Green Gables feel both familiar and newly enchanting.
Marsden’s adaptation condenses the original story while preserving key moments that fans cherish, such as Anne's ride to Green Gables, her apology to Rachel, and the slate incident with Gilbert. The brisk pacing makes it a quick, engaging read for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The emotional beats are handled with care and impact, ensuring the story's poignancy remains. Readers should have tissues ready for the heart-wrenching moments that still evoke tears, a testament to Marsden's effective storytelling.
Anne's character captivates from the first page with her infectious energy and imagination. Her growth from a talkative orphan to a responsible young lady is beautifully portrayed. The warmth and charm of Green Gables, along with Marilla and Matthew, are vividly depicted.
This adaptation has been a hit in educational settings. My students really enjoyed the story and the retelling in a graphic novel format. They loved the vibrant illustrations and found Anne's character refreshing and inspiring.

This is a beautiful, wonderful graphic novel!! If you're a fan of Anne of Green Gables, you'll definitely love this book. The illustrations are absolutely delightful! Highly recommend checking this out.
I never could finish this classic story in the past but as a graphic novel, it was absolutely delightful! I almost couldn’t put it down!
I liked the drawing style except for the pupil-less eyes.
I will begin by saying that I loved the full-colored illustrations and Brenna Thummier did a fantastic job bringing Anne’s world to the book. The illustrations are colorful.
I am sure it must be hard to adapt a classic like Anne of Green Gables into a graphic novel but Mariah did a fantastic job and brought the best parts to life and the ones we all know from the book.
This is a condensed version of the book but includes the key parts of the story such as the beautiful ride with Mathew to Green Gables, Anne’s over-the-top apology to Rachel, and Anne hitting Gilbert with the slate. Plus a few others. Although I must warn you in advance to have a tissue ready because we all know what happens near the end. I knew it was coming and I still cried.
This is a super quick and easy read perfect for fans of Anne’s and kids who love graphic novels.
The illustrations are just as charming as the prose and manage to paint a pretty picture of Green Gables that the reader can truly appreciate. Marsden manages to capture all that we love about Anne Shirley Cuthbert, from her loquaciousness to her grand imagination. An enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel version of the American classical that is Anne of Green Gables. The artwork is beautiful as is the colouring.
This edition would make a lovely birthday present or Christmas gift.
Anne of Green Gables was my JAM when I was younger. A plucky heroine who wins over everyone even though she's always getting in trouble? And don't even get me started on Gilbert. I know that graphic novel adaptions have become more popular, so I was excited to check out this one. I was not disappointed! Beautiful illustrated and told, it just adds to the author's oeuvre.
Anne of Green Gables was hands down one of my favorite children’s books growing up. Aside from reading the entire Anne of Avonlea series, I’ve read so many different versions of the original Anne of Green Gables. So I was really excited to read Mariah Marsden’s inventive take. This graphic novel version of L.M. Montgomery’s lovable heroine was exactly what I needed during this time of crisis–it was both calming and engaging, and stayed true to the original while offering its own spin. Plus, Brenna Thummler’s illustrations are bright and vivid and invite the reader into the scenery. I always loved the verdant descriptions of nature throughout Anne of Green Gables and Thummler’s drawings don’t disappoint. Anne fans will scoop this up as well as any reader who appreciates a good story with stunning illustrations. Simply magical!
My mom got a copy of this book from Netgalley. Thank you from Netgalley, to the author and to the publisher. I am 12 years old. I wanted to read this book because I am going to Prince Edward Island this summer and am going to visit Green Gables. I thought the book was good. I really liked the graphic novel format of the book. The pictures were fun. I would recommend this book to others. I give the book 4 1/2 stars
My apologies for the late review. This reminded me so much of the show. It was right on. Loved the colours that were used and the image of Anne...so cute and right, just as we know her.
Thank you for the share of your book
This book is amazing! It was nice to see a classic turned into a graphic novel. It's the perfect way to revisit the story if you've already read the original book. It was beautifully illustrated and easy to read. A perfect read for adults and children.
Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing.
I’m glad this book is adapted to graphic novel. There’s just too many classics in my to-read pile but never got to reading them.
Anne of Green Gables is one of my all time favorite stories and I was hesitant to pick this up, but was so happy I did! It's an amazing alternative version of this classic tale, told in a complete new way and yet still holds everything that I love so much about the original!
It took me longer than I would have liked to get this review out. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to download it before it was archived. Luckily, my work at the library had a copy and I recent took it out to read.
This a retelling of Anne of Green Gables and the stories that follow in the series. However, this doesn't go into the detail of the books, but instead tells a shorter story with only basic ideas of the stories. Not only that, but it cuts out important or darker scenes from the story, probably to keep the flow going or to protect young readers from it. Anne was never sent away for supposedly losing the brouch. Instead, she's told she can't go to a picnic. For someone who is only picking up the books now, this is a key moment everyone recongizes from the book. It's THE MOMENT. Cutting it felt almost disloyal to the story. From what I've heard of a friend of mine who has read the books, more moments like this are cut as well.
But it's hard not to love this book. The artwork is stunning. You can really feel the personality in the pictures, feel the emotions going through the faces of the characters. You stayed because of the artwork and how stunning it was.
Would I recommend it? To those wanting an idea of part of the timeline, yes, I do. It's a way to get into the books before reading them. It does make you want to know more.
Mariah Marsden did SUCH AN AMAZING JOB with Anne of Green Gables. This is one of my all-time favorites books, literally a book of my heart, and this graphic novel reminded me why I love it so. The art is beautiful and really captures Green Gables and all of the whimsical and wonderful characters in it. I highly recommend this.
Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this copy.
Thank you to Mariah Marsden, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me the extreme pleasure of access to an advanced reader copy of “Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel” for an honest review.
I read Anne of Green Gables as a small girl and fell in love with L.M. Montgomery’s entire world. I devoured all of Anne’s series. I fell into, and also in love with, the Avonlea TV Series. I picked up all the side books people wrote on commentary and then cookbooks. Anything and everything I could to follow more into the life of that precious and beautiful girl, Anne, so obviously, I had to read her graphic novel.
I feel this will be a great gateway for many children (and even adults!) to get into Anne of Green Gables, the books and the world, without feeling overwhelmed by the books themselves. The reading is simple and straightforward, the art is quite charming, and my forever love of ‘bosom friends’ Anne & Diana.
A gorgeous graphic adaptation of L.M. Montgomery's classic Anne of Green Gables - perfectly captures the natural beauty of Prince Edward Island.
Do you have a ten-year-old daughter (one or several around this age!), who likes to read, fantasize and be overwhelmed by irresistible characters? Do you want to introduce her to literary characters she can’t help but love? Do you want to share a magical reading moment between mother and daughter? If so, this book is for you.
This book is an adaptation of the classic Anne of Green Gables, the 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, transformed into a graphic novel.
This book is beautiful. I was so absorbed in it’s reading that I was surprised and sorry when it came to an end. In the end, it leaves you delighted.
We return to the charm and the enchantment of Avonlea, the vibrant personality and imagination of Anne (always with an -e), her heartbreaking need to be loved and accepted in the beginning, the quiet, discreet love of Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert for the always extraordinary orphan, the faithful friend Diana, the teasing boy Gilbert Blythe.
This graphic novel respects and honors the original.
The illustrations are gorgeous, the colors beautiful, there are pages with only one illustration filling it like paintings, you go through the book marveled by its flowing.
However, I don’t know if this graphic novel version of the classic could stand alone, without the backup of the worldly known original book. The story is logically truncated, condensed by this art genre.
Yet, it’s a work of art in its own right.
I received this book as an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
