Jennifer Chase has released a novel in her popular Emily Stone series, Dead Cold. Emily Stone is a former FBI profiler and forensics expert who has gone undercover to solve crimes anonymously with her partner, former FBI agent, Rick Lopez. Together they rescue kidnap victims, hunt criminals, and expose crime scenes. Their method is generally to go into a crime scene, rescue victims, or disable criminals, then call the police and disappear before anyone shows up to identify them. In this particular case, when frozen body parts begin to show up at numerous locations, both Emily and Rick are intrigued, and begin to research and investigate the case. They know the two of them can’t solve the case and handle it without help, so they bring in an old friend, Jordan Smith, who is familiar with their covert operations and skilled in high tech gadgets which he supplies to help them stay on top of the case. The more they get into the case, the more that suspense builds, and the more danger there is.
Chase has come up with characters that are fairly well-developed. They are likeable, and quite human, making it seem that they are friends or acquaintances that we would know in real life. The story flows well, and the book is difficult to put down. There is one problem with Chase’s writing, however, which may not be significant to the general reader, but is significant to English majors, and those who know proper grammar protocol. When describing the murderer, she refers to a singular murderer and then goes with her other comments as plural in the same sentence, i.e., location 1935: “the (singular) killer had spent in it, steps they (plural) took, and why they (plural) had…” This error is exhibited throughout the book dozens of times and can be quite irritating. A grammar 101 class would take care of the problem.
All told, the book is a good read. It has a fascinating storyline, good characters, and an exciting dénouement.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
First of all, I love this books cover! It caught my attention right away! But it is more important what is behind the cover and this book was great! A sadistic serial killer, frozen body parts, detective Emily Stone is on the case. What a tough case it is but does detective Emily Stone have enough profiling skills and forensic expertise to catch this killer. What an exciting book! I was on the edge of my seat my whole book! * I received this book free from Netgalley and this is my honest review*
This the first I have read by Jennifer Chase and while I was told it is a stand alone I felt lost when certian characters are introduced but not enough information given causing this reader to get lost.
Dead Cold is a non stop action thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seat that doesn't take prisoners. The story starts off with a kidnapper rescues that readers can only question how the heck did they make it out alive.
From there the story only keeps on going with the same speed while Emily and the Detective Danny Star hunt for a serial killer that gets into the minds of everyone twisting their ability to think clearly.
The author is able to create a timeline for readers by using date and time headings instead of chapters. Which readers will need as they dive into Emily's life and work.
The characters have dept that will be able to connect with them right away. Everyone is beautiful and handsome but I have found that seems to be the norm in books today.
Than you to Netgalley and the publisher JEC Press for the review copy and I can't wait to read more by this author.
Enjoyed this good murder mystery it has a good plot and interesting characters. I have not read other books in this series but probably will as I enjoyed the writing style of the author.
Thanks to NetGalley for this book.
I’ve really enjoyed the book, although this was my first one in the series. What I missed was a bit more backgroudn information. Who is Jordan? He is ex-FBI, but apparently he’s known Emily for a long time and Rick it not too happy about that.
It is a good book with a nice plot, lots of action and suprises, but the writing lacks a bit of finesse for me. It is often not very smooth, in describing people and action. I would have liked to see somewhat more difference from other characters in books. Now we have a beautiful strong woman, her companion who is a handsome strong man, a third handsome strong man, a young determined girl, a cop who is also very handsome and skilled, and a very disturbed serial killer- also very handsome. Not to forget two dogs… The book could have done with more diversity and I am missing deeper insights in the motives of the killer– more than we get now.
But despite the things I missed, I enjoyed the book, just not enough to give it 4 stars.
This is another great book in the Emily Stone series. Book 6 and still as riveting as book 1. There is high speed action from the first page and it never lets up. Good realistic characters, fast paced, a plot that keeps your attention to the end and a stand alone plot. I would recommend this series of books. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads and Amazon.
Jennifer Chase has done it again, this Emily Stone thriller is just the next thrilling installment; even better than the others in this series. The story is full of suspense, thrills, and shocking twists. Emily along with her boyfriend and coworker Rick are two people that believe wrongs need to be righted no matter if they risk themselves in the process. Their story is intense and hair raising; using their own skills and resources to investigate, hunt, and hopefully capture the evil in this world. The police are getting help and they don't know who or how these mystery people keep disappearing; or if they are the good guys. The twists to come to a stop until the very last page.
Thank you NetGalley and Jennifer Chase for allowing me to read and review this book.
