This is one of my favorite series ever. So much has happened in the previous books. Charley Charley Charley. How I love you and your people and your crazy. This one ended on a humdinger of a cliffhanger. I am unsure how I will cope until book 13 comes out. Maybe I’ll re read them all!!!
Love this series and the characters. I recommend it all over the place. Thank you for the chance to read these books again and again.
Highly entertaining and a good go to comfort read. These are the books I like to come home to after a long day at work. Easy to slip into and do not require a lot from the reader. Charley Davidson is fun and quirky and gives me what I need in an easy read!
One day. In fact, I think it was one sitting, maybe two. I have little people that interrupt me frequently. However, *this* installment of Charley Davidson was it for me. Wanna know why? It was all about Reyes. *giggle* Okay, I know, that is wrong, I should be punished...I have the perfect person in mind to dole out said punishment too...
All joking aside, I really did plow through The Trouble with Twelve Grave. I am not sure why but this book clicked for me, and it seemed shorter than several of the others. Not that it really was, but the pacing...plotting...something really was just on and I connected much better with this book than I have really since the very beginning of the series.
Quite possibly it was because answers abounded in this one. Did I like all of them? No, not by a long shot. But that's just it, sometimes you don't like the answers you're given...but you stick with the storyline and trust the author and her vision anyway. Thank you to NetGalley for the ecopy of this book that I received in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars.
I'm going to write this review as a "series" review because, quite frankly, I binge read the whole series THIRTEEN books in one week. I literally couldn't put them down. When I read the last page of the last book, I wanted to cry.
Book one hooks you from the start. The world that Darynda built within this series is phenomenally creative. It's full of magic and mystery. The hero is the perfect anti-hero turned true hero that I've read in a long, long time. My heart broke for the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine went through to get to the end of the series. Calling it an emotional rollercoaster doesn't even cover the vast span of emotions that the author drags the reader through.
The only complaint I have is that the series ended.... there was a "the end" and I didn't want to be done yet. A complete must read for all PNR lovers!
I can’t believe this series is coming to an end, A spin off series can’t come fast enough. Always lots of humour and tugging of the heart strings
A re-read thanks to a promotion by Netgalley for the final Charley Davidson book. I love this series and so happy to have it in my e-reader instead of getting a loan from the library.
This one was quite odd to me, but I now see how it perfectly set up the final book.
E-book/Urban Fantasy/ARC: I want to thank NetGalley for making the Charley Davidson series available to me in lieu of an honest review. This book (book 12) probably deserves two stars. The book was full of fillers because there really was no main plot. I did chuckle when Charley has decision burnout, but it wasn't enough to save this book for me. I had read the summary of all the books so I knew the big cliffhanger that starts book 13 and having knowledge of what rules Charley is not allowed to break, I had an idea of how book 12 was going to end. I hate to say it, but a third way in, I figured it out pretty easily and I was completely right. I couldn't understand the point of the subplots except to fill up pages. I mean, Reyes has gone Angelus threatening to kill off her friends and she's worried about exorcising a ghost out of a house and covering up a murder.
While I'm interested in how book 13 is going to play out as a series end, I was disappointed in how this book was rushed. Seriously, I read this in two days.
I absolutely love this series. Just when I think that Charlie can't do anything else, Ms. Jones proves me wrong. Ms. Jones has kept me entranced, and I can't wait to see how everything ends.
Another amazing book for this spectacular series. I have loved this series since the first book and this one hasn't changed my mind on that. I can't wait to see what happens next!
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed reading this. An interesting story with fun characters. Well written.
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave is the book leading up to the finale. It is much like the other as far as the story continues but it’s starting to get a little repetitive and far fetched. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading this arc.
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave by Darynda Jones is the second-to-last installment of the Charley Davidson series. It's been a long journey and with this book, we are one step closer to the series coming to an end, which will be sad because these characters are some of the best I've read.
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave continues right were the eleventh book left off, and our main character Charley has to deal with the repercussions of her son-of-Satan husband Reyes escaping from a hell dimension, and now he's back and raising holy hell. Not literally, but pretty close. She's trying to cover up things she's suspected he's done, and at the same time trying to navigate around the workings of her real-world life and the PI venture startup with Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford, two of the best side characters. It's all a big mess and Charley's working on cleaning it up, or she's considering dropping it all and doing whatever the heck she wants.
Darynda Jones continues to deliver with this installment. She always makes me laugh with the witty, sarcastic quips of Charley and her friends, and the hijinks that are always going to ensue around our main character. She can't ever keep herself out of trouble no matter where she goes. It's smart, funny and sexy, and the plot always keeps you on the edge of your seat.. I think this is one of the best paranormal series out there right now because it's hard to match this level of wit, comedy and action in one fell swoop.
The Trouble with the Twelfth Grave is the next Charley Davidson book by Darynda Jones. You do need to have read the previous books in the series at this point, since the characters and backstory are getting to be very important and complicated.
Ever since Reyes Farrow escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley Davidson accidentally trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that's not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings--some corporeal, some not so much--as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she's not uncovering a murder. This time she's covering one up. Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture--the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford--out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican's inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it's time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she's loved for centuries. So the question becomes: Can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she's worked so hard to protect?
The Trouble with the Twelfth Grave is ramping up the drama and crisis level of the series up even more than I fully expected. There is an awful lot going on, and if you missed or skimmed any part other the series prior to this you might have a moment of two of confusion (this will hold true in the next book as well). There is just so much going on, so many keeping things close to their chests, and so many complications that this is not the light and amusing read that hooked me. It is an enthralling thrill ride with moments of humor, but so much danger and suspense that anyone could die or switch sides at any moment. I love the read, but it is very different from the feel that hooked me into the series.
Once again, if you have read this far, keep going. The next book is the conclusion to this series. You need to keep going at this point.
After the ending of the previous book I couldn't wait to dive into Twelfth Grave and this was another action packed instalment in the series. Reyes may have escaped from the hell dimension BUT while he was there he regained all his godly memories and now it looks like the Reyes Charlie knows and loves has left the building. In his place is Rey’azikeen, the malevolent god with the power to destroy the world if Charley doesn't manage to get through to him.
This story sees Charley focused on trying to find Rey’azikeen and show him that he doesn't have to be evil. She also has a supernatural serial killer to deal with, one that was also set loose when Reyes escaped from the god glass dimension, and who is currently targeting people who have any kind of ability to see beyond the human plane. As if that wasn't enough she's Amber and Quentin have also decided to open their own private detective agency so Charley and Cookie are mentoring them as they try to solve their first case.
I loved this book, it has all the usual mayhem and madcap antics from Charley and her friends and Reyes is delicious even when he's veering towards the dark side. I think what I loved most was how strong Charley's faith in Reyes is, she knows that despite all the horrendous things he has been through there is good inside him and she's determined to find a way to bring back the man she loves. She won't accept any other option and she refuses to let anyone else sway her mind on that.
This book does end on a killer cliffhanger though, seriously if you thought the last book was bad you haven't seen anything yet! If I'd read this book when it was first published I would be pulling my hair out waiting for the next instalment but luckily Thirteenth Grave is already available and I've already been able to start reading. It isn't often that I binge read a series quite as fast as I have this one and I'm actually pretty sad that it's about to come to an end.
Great book. Love this series. If you love a good detective story you will love this book. It keeps you guessing and working with her till the end
I received a Netgalley copy for review purposes.
Once again this series had me laughing and crying. Charlie is on the top of my list for favorite female characters. She's strong, funny, and caring. The worlds that Darynda Jones create are vivid and will pull you in. I lose myself in the story. I have become emotionally invested in the entire set of characters that Charlie and Reyes have collected as their army over the series. By the end of this book I was ugly crying and as usual was left NEEDING the next book. This series remains one of my all time favorites.
This book makes me so mad that the 13th book is on hold with the library. I’m so impatient! Charley tries to fix the huge mistake she did at the end of the 12th book. She does everything she can, while protecting herself and everyone protecting the location of her daughter. I’m so sad that Charley had to deal with this. I’m not a spoiler kind of girl so I can’t really say much but, I loved the ending and honestly made me chuckle and then my heart dropped. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to review this book and this series! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
While the continuing god storyline continues (not my fave) the funny finally seems to be back in full force (definitely my fave) as Charley tries to help friend Pari, solve a string of strange crimes, and oh yeah, try to rein in her husband Reyes - who has returned from a maybe brief sojourn into the god glass in a less than friendly form. Most of the main characters make appearances in this book, and some favorites that popped in and out of previous books as well including Taft and Nicolette. Not surprisingly, Charley is constantly walking a fine line between success and disaster, especially when it comes to convincing her husband to come back to the good side. And though Jones has killed off some of the characters during the series, including Charley's father, stepmother and Reyes' stepsister, the loss of one special person might just cause Charley to break the one rule she's not supposed to.
I loved this book just as much as all the previous ones.
The entire series is so well done and I have been loving the characters.
I am so sad I am almost done reading the entire series but I will be reading them all again in the future for sure.
