This was a sweet book about a nursing-home administrator sent on temporary assignment from her HQ in Florida up to Carefree, Montana. There she meets the extremely charming Jasper Stone who seems to spend all his time at the nursing home visiting his dad and entertaining the old folks there. He’s attracted to her and tries to show her the ropes at her new job and new town.
She falls for him and the town. This seems to be the ideal nursing home that you wished your relatives could spend their last years at and you’ll wish that someone like Jasper could come in and organize wheelchair dodgeball with balloons filled with shipping cream (though I’m not sure how he gets the whipped cream in the balloons.)
This was my first romance in McGinnis’s Whisper Creek series, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next one.
I was given a free ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I sure wish I'd come across this series prior to this latest story...I immediately fell in love with the entire cast of characters and with Whisper Creek. I do plan to rectify this oversight ASAP and go backwards and start at the beginning to immerse myself in everyone's backstory.
What caught my attention early on was the wickedly smart dialogue and off the charts banter that hit the perfect mixture of hilarity and dry wit. The story was fast paced, moving and turning quickly, keeping me engaged from the beginning. The premise of the backdrop of a retirement home as the stage for Jasper and Emma's story was a fresh one that I haven't seen used...very genius bringing in the residents, each playing their own part in the couple's story.
Right out of the gate, Jasper jumped off the pages with his boyish exuberance and his seemingly joy for life...the author was remarkable in pulling the reader into his pain masked by his generous and giving personality that drew people to him. With her own painful past, Emma covered hers with over the top achievements in both her personal and business lives. The by play between the two was charming and heartwarming...especially when you include the kittens.
I hope this isn't the last of the Whisper Creek series, I'd definitely like to return for another visit.
This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
Emma comes to the town of Whisper Creek to work at a nursing home for a three month assignment. She is usually all work and no play, but that is until Jasper, one of the resident's son, shows her there is more to life.
This was a great read. It is part of the Whisper Creek series, but can be read as a standalone. I have read many books by this author and look forward to reading even more.
This is my first book by Maggie McGinnis.

I look forward to reading more from this author.
The focus now moves from Whisper Creek Ranch to the town of Carefree, Montana. Previously, we have had glimpses of both Jasper and Ian, but this book is Jasper's story. The story opens in Shady Acres, the local retirement/nursing home, run by Bette, who has to have surgery, requiring a 12 week recovery, and is being temporary replaced by someone from the Galway Health home office in Florida. Jasper owns the local coffee shop and his father is a resident of the home, so he spends a lot of time there, keeping the residents lively. Emma Winthrop has an MA in Healthcare Administration (among some other degrees) and has worked for Galway for 10 years, but never has actually worked in a nursing home. From the first time these two meet, there are sparks, noted by residents and town folk alike. Jasper has a way of relaxing the people around him, just what Emma needs. But they both have past hurts, secrets, that neither have heeled from. Is this bad timing, or were they meant to meet now? Will Jasper ever feel that he deserves to let go and move on? And what is in the Whispering Creek water?
Always knew that there was something behind Jasper! I loved this book. Maggie McGinnis is one of my favorite authors and will continue to be if she keeps writing these awesome books! Keep it coming, Maggie!!!!
Ah!! I love Maggie McGinnis. Her books always leave me with a huge smile on my face and this book was no different. She brings her characters to life through her words, wisdom, and expressiveness, The settings for her books are exquisite- I want to go to Whisper Creek and meet a sexy and sweet cowboy- and I wouldn't mind visiting these fictional places. The romance? Top notch! It may not be earth shattering and erotic like some people like, but that is what makes me want to read her books. We don't need over the top sex to get us going, her characters are enough.
Overall, I adored this book! And I can't wait for more Maggie McGinnis in the near future. She is my go to author for sweet romances!
This story is tough to review because on one hand it is well written, the characters are fun and I really liked them. And I loved mot of the story. On the other hand I felt we were kept in the dark about Jasper's history til almost the end of the book and it made me lose patience with the story. As to Emma's secret I kinda felt it was just such a surprise that it made nothing else that happened make sense.
This is my first time reading this series and author and so maybe this is normal in this series. I mostly liked Jaspers character, except how he treats Emma after their one night. And to be honest after that I wanted to have Emma hook up with Liam because Jasper was such an Ass....
As to Emma she was terrific and she stayed mostly the same though her secret which was not hinted about anywhere throughout the book until it was this big thing. She was this absolutely wonderful character and I loved her so much I just wished he'd have a better guy than Jasper.
For most of the book I did like Jasper but after the way he treated her....NOT. He was a creep and claiming to love her, I did not buy for second. Not even a millisecond. I am not even sure he knows how to love. Did I like him for most of the book?yes. But after how he treats her and what he says to her...UGH not at all. And to come back with I love you etc after he finds out her news...NOT!!!
Sweet. Swoon worthy and a ton of fun! Emma and Jasper are impossible to not fall in love with.
Taking a Chance follows the story of Emma and Jasper. Emma is a workaholic who lives in sunny Florida. She loves her life and isn't too pleased when she finds herself temporarily transferred to Montana. Montana is unlike anything she's experienced and when Jasper enters her life, truer words were never spoken. Jasper is wild and always up to no good. He loves to have fun and can't resist getting under Emma's skin. What he never planned on was falling for Emma himself....
Overall, I thought this book was a lot of fun. It was heartwarming and a total breath of fresh air. I thought that this story was really well written and was totally easy to get swept up in. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and falling in love with their story. I loved the setting of this story and thought the plot was a lot of fun. Emma and Jasper had great chemistry and they kept me coming back for more. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to discovering more of her books in the future.
This is my first time to read this author and I have been missing out. The story of Emma Winthrop and Jasper Stone in the Whisper Creek series is a delightful read filled with sexy cowboys, cuddly kittens, and mischievous senior citizens. I laughed out loud at some of the antics that Jasper gets into with the senior citizens in the Shady Acres Retirement Home. It isn't all fun and games as Emma and Jasper both have some baggage from their past to deal with but the author handles it well and created a feeling of empathy and understanding in me for the characters. I like the the author doesn't beat the bad things to death like so many authors do and drag you down with the story or make you want to throw the book down and forget about it. This book a is heartwarming, witty, make-you-smile, contemporary romance that I highly recommend. I am definitely going to get the other books in the Whisper Creek series to read and put Maggie McGinnis on my "favorite authors" list.
I love this series! This book was adorable! Casper is my favorite. He was funny and so so good to Emma. This is one series I will read over and over again!
This was a very nice, well written story about risk and second chances at love and family. Emma and Jasper both have their secrets from their past but God has brought them together for some purpose. You will laugh and cry with this book but in the end you will know that you can heal from past mistakes and guilt and regret.
Another great hit in a sweet series. They should really bottle the water there in Montana, as it makes all these city girls want to stay. Of course the hunky men might have something to do with it as well. This is the story of Jasper, who runs the coffee shop in town, and Emma, who is only working as the administrator of the nursing home while the other is recovering from surgery. Since Jasper's dad is at the home, it is game on for these two. Fun story, with some angst from the past on both parts, but overall a sweet romance. I have read others in the series, but to be honest I do not think you would be lost if this is the first you've read. Highly recommend this book, series and author. Hard to put down.
I wonder what kind of surgery Bette is having. It sounds serious.
Ha, Jasper sounds like fun!
Playing with balloons is considered an appropriate activity for seniors?
That Dutch nursing home sounds fantastic.
I love Sophia and Blanche, myself.
I really would like to know what horrible things occurred in their pasts.
He's the Coffee Nazi.
How can you not be a cowboy person?
Man, why do I get the feeling his wife was pregnant?
Ma and Kyla are definitely matchmaking.
Someone find her father and punch him in the balls, and then "accidentally" run him over.
What's she doing climbing a tree while pregnant?
Can she find out where her daughter is?
Taking a Chance is the sixth delightful romance in the Whisper Creek series written by author Maggie McGinnis. Lovely characters. Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group-Loveswept for the advance copy.
When I'm trying to decide between giving a book four or five stars, it always comes down to one thing - does it touch my heart. This book definitely did. Despite their witty banter and playfulness, it was obvious they they had both suffered. They overcame those odds with the help of their families and friends at Whisper Creek. Here's to hoping for another book in the series (maybe Ari will come visit and drink the water)!
Returning to Whisper Creek is so exciting! Maggie McGinnis writes with such imagery that I can see the beauty of Montana through these pages. I have a newfound desire to visit just to experience this first hand- and not just the cowboys : )!
Jasper was someone I was interested in while reading the other books in this series. I was anxious to know his story! He arrives in Carefree with a tragic past trying to start over. Owning the beloved coffee shop is only a tip of what makes up this extraordinary man. Jasper gives back so much to his community and takes care of so many. His father is in the local nursing home and Jasper spends most of his days there being a jack-of-all- trades assisting in whatever ways he is needed. When he barges in on the new, temporary director, Jasper sees "purple". Again, McGinnis is so good with her use of imagery I couldn't help but picturing each grin and wink Jasper flashed.
Emma Winthrop is pushed from the corporate nest in Florida and sent to be hands on Montana. Having her coffee dumped all over her, flashing her VS to a handsome stranger and inheriting a mountain of paperwork sums up her first day perfectly. When said sexy stranger ends up being the Shady Acres menace to society Emma has her hands full. Not only with Jasper, but with the facility itself as Bette, whom she is standing in for, has made things none to easy for her.
The first 35% of this book focuses on the nursing home and its funny, loving residents. Slow down and take your time reading this portion as it is fun, heartwarming and shows the true qualities of both Emma and Jasper. Also, Emma being thrown in the fire so to speak and not focusing on her climb up the corporate ladder, she learns that the home office might not have a real grasp on what exactly is needed for the people they serve. I loved the characters of Shady Acres. Each had such strong personalities and reminded you that they weren't people set aside- or put out to pasture- but capable, smart, and loving and mostly deserving of more from the home office.
Jasper and Emma have such chemistry between them and struggle to set it aside- neither wanting to acknowledge it. When the beauty of the mountains and the water of Whisper Creek ranch force these two to knock down the walls and be vulnerable with one another sparks fly. Well, that is until the next morning when Jasper becomes a jerk. Not really, he is too good of a person to be a jerk, but he does completely flake out on Emma. Emma had bared her soul to Jasper and feels rejected by his snub.
This part of the story becomes so emotional and- might I add- tearful. Emma's story is absolutely heartbreaking. She is devastated and Jasper is scared as he is reminded of the great secret in his past. As always, keeping secrets just hurt others and cause him to pull away. Does distance make the heart grow founder? Make you see exactly what the heart is feeling?
I loved the book, but the last several chapters were just awesome. I laughed, I cried,I worried and then I laughed and cried! Liam? Please?
I did not get a chance for finish this novel. Based on the description, I was very intrigued but upon reading the story my expectations just fell kind of flat. I wish that the story had more to it. This was not one of my favorites and I hate to mark it on my DNF shelf. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read and review.
