THIS LOVE STORY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT is an all-consuming read. Leslie Cohen's debut rendered me completely useless on a snowy Sunday in April (yes, April. Spring is drunk). This book had the perfect balance of funny and light-hearted moments with depth and emotion. Highly recommended for seekers of "can't put it down" reads.

Eve and Ben meet in college in Columbia University. They're opposites but you know what they say about that, right? Eve is a free-spirited and artsy aspiring music journalist while Ben is an analytical engineering student. Despite meeting multiple times in college, Eve can't seem to hold onto his name. The reader is dropped throughout moments in their twenties. Flash-forward three years after they first meet, Eve works at a restaurant and is dating a guy who is more interested in the drugs part of "sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll." Even more time passes and they run into each other again, but this time sparks fly.

Eve's self-destructive behavior is the product of her troubled and tragic childhood. Her father walked out on her mom and sister and never looked back. Her mother perished in the 9/11 attacks. Her fear of abandonment and attachment has gotten her in trouble in past relationships. She always seems to pick the wrong guy, until Ben. Ben is the ying to her yang. He is well-adjusted, level-headed, and brings a sense of calm to her neurotic tendencies. I really loved them as a couple. I love Ben's patience with Eve and how supportive he is.

This book is very much about Eve coming to terms with her past but it's also a story of just how powerful the good kind of love can be. There was a part of Eve that identified with so completely. There is a scene that she experienced between her father that I connected with on such a personal level. I totally understood Eve's character and reluctance to jump into something completely due to fear.

New York City is a secondary character in this novel, pushing and pulling Eve in different directions. Her past is tethered to different parts of the city. When she moved away, the city called her back. Ultimately, she found herself in the city where she experienced so much pain. I really liked experiencing the culture and the landscape of the city.

It seems like my streak of finding great debuts continues into 2018. I read most of this book in one day because I simply couldn't put it down. Will Ben and Eve end up together or will Eve's propensity to self-sabotage ruin them? Cohen is a yet another author I'm going to keep an eye on.

This was an easy and cute read. Nothing too heavy. It's told in alternating from Eve and Ben. two 20-something year olds attending Columbia university. The two have mutual friends, but zero in common. No chemistry, attraction, or common interests. However, the continue to cross paths and eventually come together. A cute and light-hearted read.

A cute, witty romantic comedy for anyone who has ever gone home with the wrong one while just missing the right one.

Really wanted to like this book, but couldn't get into the characters or the plot. This was a DNF for me.

Thank you to Netgalley for offering me an ARC of this novel to review with my honest opinions.

Boy meets girl. Girl is "quirky" and "damaged". Boy is boring and not fleshed out.

The whole book had me just saying ehhh over and over. Every single twist and surprise was seen coming from miles away.

The writing was overly flowery, I feel, to make up for lack of actual storyline and plot. NOTHING HAPPENED. I feel like this could have been a novella, or even a short story and been way more interesting. The italics were so overused in this novel. It didn't add anything, but it certainly detracted from this novel.

Perhaps this novel just wasn't for me, but I didn't see any plus-es to this novel at all....oh - except for Arthur. Arthur was a gem.

Where to start....I had high hopes for this book because the synopsis sounded so heartbreaking and amazing. It started off easy to handle. But then the relationship between the main character and her love interest just irritated me. She was sort of air headed about certain things. The writing style was a bit too quirky for my tastes. I really wasn’t interested in how each chapter flipped from year to past years to present years - just isn’t my thing.

This is a story about Eve and Ben. They are complete opposites. She’s a dreamer and he’s even-keeled and responsible. They don’t hit it off right away, but keep running into each other over time.
I tried this book because it compared itself to one of my all-time favorite rom-coms. However, I really couldn’t get into the characters. I have a hard time with characters like Eve and right from the beginning, from the first interactions with her friends, I had problems with her. Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.

"This Love Story Will Self-Destruct" is a clever story about love, relationships, and life. Eve is a dreamer while Ben keeps his feet to the ground. Instead of “meeting cute,” their first meeting is not remarkable other than they continue to cross paths over the course of several years.

Like many novels of this type, the story shifts between the POVs of Ben and Eve, but Leslie Cohen keeps the plot fresh, the characters believable (without being too self-deprecating) and offers plenty of surprises to keep you reading until the final page.

For any fan of a well-written story that resonates with the reader after you finish the final page, I highly recommend this book. I am certainly looking forward to the author’s next novel. I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me an advanced copy.

Tried this one a few times....I just could not get into. Gave it several chapters and it just missed it's mark with me.

Star rating added only because Netgalley system requires it.

I loved being in NYC with Eve and Ben. (Oddly, I've read four books this year with Ben as one of the main characters). THIS LOVE STORY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT was a sweet, quippy love story that portrays some realistic complexities of relationships. I wanted more from the 9/11 storyline - I was anticipating a greater depth to that reveal. Overall, a fun read.

A classic new adult romance that shows two individuals’ evolution through life and love as they keep reconnecting and eventually build a relationship one meeting at a time. I tried reading but found myself unable to connect with the heroine; I just can’t stomach a whiny self-absorbed 20-year-old making bad decision one right after another. A majority of the story is from the heroine’s pov and she’s annoying. I’m going to try again at a later date because the reviews for it are very favorable.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I had a hard time getting into this book, but once I did, I was hooked. Realistic, modern rom-com literature at its finest.

Leslie Cohen offers readers a gentle but solid relationship novel. I really appreciated the depth of the character profile of the heroine. The hero's profile isnt quite as strong. The story itself, with all it's chance meetings, get togethers and pull aparts kept my interest and was quite entertaining. Ms. Cohen switches points of view from the heroine to the hero and that was a bit difficult for me, as I was not as cued into the hero. If you like a relationship story with all its' ups and downs, this one might be a good fit.

I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for my review. I just loved this story so much! I adored Eve, who was just enough of a hot mess that she felt really familiar to me- like we must have been friends in college or something. Then there was Engineer Ben, who always seems to know how everything works. They are at their best together, but they cannot seem to figure that out, which makes it fun and angsty for the reader. There are just not enough truly adorable stories like this one!

When I read the title of this book I sorta thought this wasn't going to end well. I mean the title says it all right? This is a coming of age of two opposite individuals meeting one another again and again, and I like that. Their love wasn't there right away as any other story you have read (I think) it was more of baby steps, especially for the character, Eve. She's a mess. It's okay she agrees also lol, and she is just scared of being in a relationship because she believes he will leave in the end. She rather be with someone who is more of a mess like she is. In a way she's someone you can compare yourself to when it comes trying to mature and find your way around life. You have phases in your life and I love that the author used that in her book. Truth be told, it took a while for me to like Eve. during her college days, I found her so annoying but I grew to enjoy what she was thinking and feeling. I think anyone who is into witnessing how someone matures and learns to love, this is the kind of book it is. It was cute, weird, funny and did I mention weird? lol some moments eve had were weird. Especially creating a song about some certain item lol. Not going to spoil it. I hope you enjoyed this review and just keep on reading my lovelies.

I had to force myself to finish this one. I just did. not. care. about Eve or Ben. At all.

I did not enjoy this book at all. She's point of view chapters were filled with so many self pitying thoughts. I could not connect with her at all because I was so annoyed.

Ben's POV chapters were only mildly better.

I found myself skimming a good portion of the last part of the book. I wanted to know how it all ended, but could not give any more energy to trying to like Eve.
