Riley Can Be Anything is a charming title. Young Riley imagines and dreams of all the possibilities for his life with the help of Cousin Joe. This sweet story is endearing in its positive message that Riley is only limited by his ability to dream of big things he can do and be. The illustrations are wonderfully done. The rhyming pattern will appeal to toddler age children, but the story is complex enough and interesting enough to hold the attention of early readers and elementary students. This is a big plus in our household with children 2.5 years apart. This title would make a good addition to a school, public or home collection.
'Riley Can Be Anything' by Davina Hamilton with illustrations by Elena Reinoso is a book about all the possibilities available to a young boy.
Riley is spending time with his older cousin Joe. Joe asks lots of questions. When Joe asks Riley what he wants to be when he grows up, Riley can't decide. Joe tells Riley about all the great career opportunities that others in their family have had, like chefs, musicians, teachers, and others. Riley really can be anything.
I really liked this book about the ability for young Riley to be anything he can. The text is niceand so are the illustrations. I have one big nitpick with the art, though. On one page, Uncle Boz is a jazz musician who plays the trumpet, but the illustration shows someone holding a saxophone. In a story that gets so much right, this illustration really bugged me.

Great book for careers and self-esteem. The illustrations are very cute. Great to have another cousin book out there.
Cute story, a simplistic on the illustrations and the writing but I could see some of our students liking it.
This wonderful children's story delves into a variety of possibilities for what this young black boy can be in the future, as he reflects with others about what family members have already achieved.
Riley Can Be Anything is a charming read-along children's book with beautiful illustrations and rhyming text.
Riley's visiting his older cousin Joe and getting some future career advice along the way. Will he be a chef? A jazz musician? A doctor? Only time will tell.
I wish I lived in a world where it didn't attract my attention (and appreciation) that there are more books today with a positive message about diversity and possibilities for children of color. This book does not make a big deal at all over the fact that Riley's a non-white kid, but it's nice that there are books out there with a positive message for all kids.
Positive, upbeat, sweetly silly rhyming, and the illustrations are adorable. The pic of Riley's classroom with their little school uniforms made me *awww* out loud. (Really, I'm a total sappy marshmallow).
I can see this book becoming a favorite bedtime read. It's VERY short (24pages).
I'm currently working with first graders in an inner city school, and I try to help the students visualize themselves in careers as adults. Unfortunately, they don't often have role models to look up to. This beautifully illustrated picture book gives options for the many careers the main character can aspire to when he grows up. What I especially liked about the story is that each of these careers mentioned featured one of the main character's relatives. I will definitely purchase a copy of this book to read with the students.
This book delivers a nice simple message, that young Riley can be anything that he wants to be when he grows up if only he puts his mind to it. The rhyming text makes this an enjoyable read with a nice rhythm, however I found that some pages had far too much text on. Three sizeable paragraphs on some of the pages, could have been spread out over several pages and more of the lovely illustrations added. The text I also found a little difficult to read, with the bold typeface appearing slightly fuzzy at the edges, for me personally. Other than that, I love the message behind this book.
An encouraging book for young kids. I'm especially thrilled to see a book with an African American child as the main character and on the cover of the book.
This is another wonderful case of children being able to see themselves in the books they read.
I especially like, although I was frustrated at first, that we are told that Riley can be anything he wants to be. I was frustrated, because I wanted to find out what he was going to be when he grew up, then in the end, that wasn't the point. The point was that there was no restrictions. That he wasn't limited, and it didn't matter if he hadn't chosen what he wanted to be when he went to grade school, he had all the time to chose what he wanted to do best.
Hopefully an inspiring book for children of all colors and genders, and shapes and sizes to know that they are not limited to what they want to be. That they don't have to fit into any one job, until they are ready.

This was a good book in terms of showing children that they can be anything that they want to be when they grow up, there are no limitations or restrictions. I liked that it rhymed in places too - overall a really nice little book - 4 stars
