Tamara Gill is a new author for me and it was an amazing first experience. The fact that she is also an Aussie author was just a bonus!
In To Conquer A Scot we have modern day Abigail Cross involuntarily drawn back to 17th century Scotland by the Laird’s sister, Gwen, who believes Abigail is his perfect match. Gwen believes that her brother, Aedan, has suffered and given up too much to secure his clan and believes Abigail is the only person that can save Aedan from himself.
This writer has penned a book that is truly a page turner. She has a truly engaging, and thoroughly addictive writing style. Her world building is very well done; describing life in 17th century Scotland accurately enough to be credible but tweaked sufficiently (for example: the fact that she is readily accepted as a time traveller and not immediately burnt as a witch) to allow the story to move on and develop at a good pace.
Both the main leads and the secondary characters are extremely well developed. Both Abigail and Aedan had their own personality strengths and foibles which only made them come alive on the paper because despite their flaws, or perhaps because of them, they were both genuinely likeable characters. The secondary cast were also developed as much as was required by the story. There didn’t feel to be any one dimensional, or paper cut-out characters, no matter how minor their role. Everyone was an individual.
There were a few suspense, action, and angst scenes in this book, enough to have a few ‘how will they get out of this?’ moments and to keep the pace of the book flowing and lively, but not too many to detract from the main purpose of the book and that was a character study of the development of the characters and the relationships between them.
The only thing I found missing in this book is the character of Jinny. So many of the thoughts and actions in this book revolve around her and the terrible assault she suffered by a rival clan. Although we learn that she has retreated to a convent, it would have been nice to meet her at some stage, no matter how briefly. However, I’m hoping a conversation between Aedan and Abigail later in the book is a hint of a happy ending for Jinny in a future book.
Overall, I was completely enamoured with my first Tamara Gill book, I could not put it down until it was finished, and I’ll certainly be checking out her other titles.
I received a copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving an honest opinion.
Laird Aedan really needs to find a wife and marry. His choices are not the best but he needs an heir.
His sister has been looking for a wife for her brother and she feels she has found her...in the future.
Abigail is in Scotland on vacation. While touring a castle and it's land she is whisked back in time. At first she thinks she has lost her mind as Aedan's sister explains why she brought Abbie back in time.
Abbie insists to be returned to her time but cannot be at that time. She meets Aedan and thinks he is arrogant as she is told she wouldn't meet the highland standard. This is the beginning of much angst between the two but there is also attraction.
Several Laird's are coming to participate in highland games and to show their daughter's off to Aedan. He actually asks Abbie if she would help him find a wife. She will pose as a family friend from France, as America was not founded yet.
Will Abbie help him find a wife? Will she return to her time?
Even as their attraction grows, Abbie still plans on returning to her time. Both are jealous when the other is given attention from the opposite sex.
I loved this story! Aedan and Abbie bump heads from the beginning. What really got me was when danger was present, enough that Aedan didn't know if he would survive, and he wanted to keep Abbie safe. Of course I can't go into detail, no spoilers! It just tore my heart out!!
If you love your highlanders, this is a must read!
For me this was a really refreshing take on the time travel theme. It is a little different to most popular stories that I have read before and it really stands out amongst them because of it. The idea of someone bringing you from the future to the past for their own purposes was a brilliant way to set up the story to bring the hero of Aedan Macleod and the heroine of Abigail Cross together.
As you would guess Abby is none too happy about being in 1601 at first until she finds herself falling in love with not only the beautiful scenery of the Scottish Highlands but of the the handsome Aedan. At first they have a terrible clash of personalities that is kind of like an enemies to lovers story but as they become more acquainted with each other they become more of friends to lovers. Abby is a feisty woman that stands up to Aedan which he can't help but find attractive about her as he is normally used to the women of his time being subservient and eager to please him.
There is a lot of drama in this book starting with the build up of the Highland games from which Aedan is supposed to be looking for a wife from one of the other Clans in attendance to form an alliance with to a clash with a few of the other Clans of the Scottish Highlands, particularly one that has insulted and abused one of Aedan's sisters. There is never a dull moment in this book, and each chapter ends with you want to keep reading to find out more.
I totally loved this book as it ticked all the boxes for me. It has lots of Passion, Anger, Romance and Fighting in abundance, but it also has lot's of funny moments that will make you love this book too!
Tamara Gill is a wonder at writing such wonderful and exciting stories that she has me as a reader keep wanting to come back for more of her stories. This is a brilliant 5 Stars!
Wow, this book was fantastic!!! Loved the characters, the story, location, and then I cried.... I could read this again and still love every page!
This book was surprising good. I haven't read anything by this author and I am always a little weary when trying out someone new but I enjoyed this one!
There is time traveling and scotsmen. Is there anything else we need? Now that being said, there were still a few issues I had but nothing too major.
Overall it was a great book and I will be looking out for more from Tamara Gill.
a solid and enjoyable historical romance. Good solid plot. Excellent romance.
Abigail Cross is on holiday in Scotland on her way to visit a castle. A storm starts, so she shelters in a cottage. Next thing she knows is waking up in the seventeenth century. How dare the meddling witch drag her through time.
Aedan MacLeod knows his sister is up to no good. If she is not careful with her magic she could be in danger.
Aedan is Laird of his clan . With that comes a lot of responsibilities. He has revenge on his mind that could see his clan at war. For that he needs allies. Hopefully he can find a bride with good connections at the games .
Our heroine is livid at being dragged from all her modern comforts to this harsh time with Neanderthal type highland men.
A funny highland adventure that was great fun to read. It has lots of twists and turns. The relationship between our characters is volatile to say the least. The secondary characters are also ones I would like to read more about. Hopefully with magic in the family we might.
I loved it.
Transported into the past by a well meaning source, Abigail finds herself toe to toe then eventually heart to heart with a handsome, mountain of muscle, master and commander of his Scottish clan, Aedan MacLeod, who just happens to be seeking a wife so he can continue to carry out his dutiful duties as Laird.
You know things are not starting off well when the hero, at least for a second, considers dragging the heroine off into the forest she happens to be wandering nearby and killing her so she wouldn’t bring accusations of witchcraft to his clan. Fortunately, it was supposedly just a fleeting thought. I must admit it had me questioning if this hero and I were going to hit it off, folks.
Up until about 70%, the plot was engaging, and I hung on to every word as these two destined to be together, adversary lovebirds danced around each other and tried to deny their attraction. With other women circling around Aedan hoping to be his chosen bride, it was hard at times to sit by and watch the flirting commence. Especially after the main couple finally spend a night together, and Aedan bestows a public kiss upon Aline, the heroine’s main competition, the next day. Up until this point both of them still seemed to be set upon the notion Abby wasn’t a wife contender and would be leaving sooner rather than later.
Well, after the point I just mentioned, the spell was broken for me. The plot started to feel like it had lost its purpose. The next 10% were all very graphic smexy scenes. The highlight was at least they were finally a couple, and things were looking up. It should have ended there, my fellow romance book-loving friends. Needless to say, it didn’t. I just didn’t particularly buy into or enjoy how the rest of the storyline went, especially the continued other woman drama. The last 30% drastically affected my opinion of this story.
Title: To Conquer a Scot, Series: Time-Traveler’s Highland Love (Book 1), Author: Tamara Gill, Pages: 291, new to me author, handsome Laird hero seeking a wife, sassy 21st century heroine, adversaries to lovers, time travel, very smexy scenes.
(I received a free advanced reader copy via NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. No type of compensation was given to this reviewer. There is no relationship/affiliation between the reviewer and the author/publisher/NetGalley.)
Aedan, Laird Macleod has two sisters, Jinny and Gwen. Gwen has a touch of magic in her and she decided, her brother needed someone special. So she brought Abigail Cross across time from the twenty first century to the seventeenth century, for him. She was his soul mate.
I did shed a few tears, when they got separated. Everything about this tale was wonderful. The characters, the descriptions and the plot. The plot was unusual and there was a lot going on but it was exciting, fun and very racy. There was battles, a vicious female, some nice ones also and so much love. .I enjoyed the camaraderie among the Scots and the family members. The support they gave to each other. I hope you like this book as much as I did.
I really enjoyed this book and never wanted to put it down. The world building was great and I absolutely loved the characters (except the ones purposely made to hate of course). Aedan and Abby were so believable together and highly entertaining. They're both products of their time which makes them drastically different, but they're also so similar. Their interactions were always so much fun to read about, especially when they were pushing the other to their limits. After reading this, I can't help but think about how many people would actually be willing to give up everything they have ever known and the comforts of today for love.
Abby is on vacation in Scotland when Aedan's sister, Gwen, pulls her out of her time and into theirs. Thrown back 400 years, it's a huge change to deal with. Gwen brought her there because she believed that Abby would be the perfect wife with Aedan despite what he thinks he wants in one. Neither are thrilled with what she has done, but Gwen can't send Abby back until the original magic has worn off. So she has to make the best of things until then. Abby had arrived shortly before the highland games were to be hosted at Aedan's keep, and I liked learning a little bit more about them with her. As the days pass, both Aedan and Abby find their attention drifting back to the other until they can't deny their desire. Their happily ever after is not easily found though, as there is always something that seems to happens to complicate things. While some of these situations felt contrived to me in order to force a specific outcome, I did like how everything went. Except the very end. While Aedan and Abby finally get to be together, I feel it came at the expense of Aedan's best friend, Ben. Whom I also loved, so I didn't think this was fair. But it might be okay and I'd love to find out what happens next.
Publisher's Description:
Time-traveling isn’t what Abigail Cross had in mind for her Scottish vacation, nor was a potential marriage to the Laird Aedan Macleod. The fact that the obnoxious, yet hot, and definitely sexy Highlander sees the world very differently than she does, is beside the point.
Aedan Macleod knows what he wants in a wife, and Abigail certainly doesn’t meet his Highland standard, even though he must rein in his desire, because beautiful, opinionated Abigail would never suit as a laird’s wife.
Tempers flare yet passion is undeniable, as Abby navigates her way in seventeenth century Scotland—without toilet paper. When two rival clans threaten the maddening twenty-first century minx who’s captured Laird Aedan’s heart, the mighty Highlander is willing to sacrifice everything to keep Abigail safe.
My Thoughts:
A meddlesome sister in medieval times. A less than happy young woman in modern times. A spell that brings present day to the past!
These are the elements of this well written, comical at times time travel romance by one of my favorite authors of historical and time travel romance novels.
Can this medieval hero and this twenty-first century heroine make each other happy? Will Abby deign to stay in the past without the comforts of 2017?
As per usual by Tamara Gill I was not disappointed in this read.
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 4 of 5 flames.
This book is both delightful and at time comical.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the author via personally sent pdf.and the publisher via Netgalley.
This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I have read twice now prior to publication and have reviewed voluntarily.
As a time travel romance To Conquer a Scot brings together love and heartbreak. Ms. Gill’s gift with words takes you into the life of the people of whom she writes. Abigail or Abby is brought back to 17th century Scotland while on vacation there by Gwen, Aedan’s sister. Gwen told Abby she had been watching her and knew she would be the right wife for Aedan, the Laird of Clan Macleod. It is never explained how she has watched Abby or how she knew any of this, but who cares, it makes for a great book.
A few family members know of Gwen’s gift, but only a few and it is passed down through the women in their line. Understandably, at first, Aedan is angry at his sister’s meddling in his life. He does not care who he marries, but he knows he has to marry. It does not take long for Aedan to fall in love with Abby. Yet, she is determined to return to her own time as soon as possible. But, there is a really hot Scot in a kilt right in front of her. Who is going to turn him down? Their love is sweet and sincere and a lasting one.
Ms. Gill uses historical situations to make this book even more real as Abby and Aeden fall more deeply in love. Without giving away the ending, my heart was breaking right along with Abby’s. The great thing about To Conquer is that you know Abby and Aeden will have their HEA, but you never know or can predict what is going to happen next. Ms. Gill is a truly gifted writer and worth your time when looking for a romance.
Interesting story, but the I've always liked time travel. ;) I enjoyed it a lot, although at the end it did seem as if story was dragging a little but all in all I loved it.
I have read several of Ms. Gill’s books and really liked them but normally do not read time travel stories. So glad I read this story. Challenges of the 17th century are not always easy to get around. Just ask Abigail and Aedan. I liked that Abigail did not try to change the past but kind of went with it even though she hated some of its inconveniences. There were some tear-jerker moments and some laughing times. Will Abigail stay with Aedan, will she demand to be returned to the 21st century, will Aedan fight for her? Love….
Tamara Gill does an amazing job of telling the tale of a modern day woman who is transported back in time to the Scottish Highlands. Unlike other time travel stories, Abigail actually doesn't want to stay at first - she misses all the modern conveniences of the 21st Century. Of course, that is before she comes to know the Laird Aeden.
The characters go back and forth about why she is here and when she can return. All of this is in the midst of a Highland Games tournament being held to help the Laird pick a wife (as well as help him form alliances to battle an enemy).
Just when I thought everything was going well and I was about to see the Happily Ever After, Ms Gill takes the story in another direction. The unexpected turn is what makes this story different from all the other time travel romances around. How she manages to bring the story to an end is part heart-breaking and part heart-warming. This is definitely a romance worth reading.
I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed "To Conquer a Scot" by Tamara Gill, but I wasn't in love with the main characters, Abby and Aeden. Abby is a modern, 21st century woman, and Aeden is a 17th century scotsman. Abby is brought back in time because Aeden's sister Gwen believes Abby is her brother's soulmate. Aeden isn't happy about this an neither is Abby. In fact, Aeden contemplates killing Abby so that he can get her out of the way.
But Aeden needs a wife and the highland games are getting underway so that he can choose a future bride. Abby and Aeden, even though they constantly clash, decide to work together to find Aeden a perfect bride.
I didn't feel the love and attraction between these two. One day they can't stand each other, as before mentioned Aeden contemplating Abby's murder, and then all of a sudden they are agreeing to a 17th century friends-with-benefits affair. Didn't feel realistic.
I finished the story and eventually even came to (kind of) like the main characters. Some of the story wrapped up way too quickly and some parts lingered way too long. A few passionate scenes, but nothing erotic. I would recommend this read to readers who enjoy time-travel books, the more I read of them I decide that they aren't quite my thing.
To Conquer a Scot, by Tamara Gill is an interesting historical highlander time-traveling romance.
While vacationing in modern-day Scotland, Abigail Cross unsuspectingly time-travels to the 1600s, due to Laird Aedan Macleod's meddling sister.
Abigail doesn't want to live in historic Scotland and demands to return home immediately, yet there are various conditions that force her to wait. And Abigail definitely isn't interested in applying for the position of Aedan's wife. Even though he is physically attracted to the time-traveler, Aedan knows he needs to find someone who will benefit his clan.
Due to the highlander games, several clans are visiting while Abigail is trapped in history. It's an interesting story with unique characters, as well as various twists and surprises as the story continues.
As the first book in the Time-Traveler's Highland Love series, To Conquer a Scot is geared towards those who enjoy reading unique historical romances, particularly stories involving highlanders and time-travelers.
Note: I received this book from NetGalley, which is a program designed for bloggers to write book reviews in exchange for books, yet the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
4.5stars
A compelling page turning romance that took me through a gamut of emotions from chuckling to crying. I’m not normally a fan of time travelling novels & Highlanders don’t make me weak at the knees, I was intrigued by Gwen in the prologue but I think what really drew me in was Abby’s idea of a Highlander matched my own so I thoroughly enjoyed having my opinion along with hers changed. Aedan was tall, broad & very handsome & gave the impression of being a dour Scotsman but he had a decidedly soft centre, he was kind, his clan respected him, as he was fair & loyal. Abby was a feisty twenty first century woman who was strong & outspoken who missed many of the modern day necessities particularly toilet paper. Both had known heartbreak & weren’t looking for love but their attraction was immediate & Oh that first kiss on the stairs SO hot & their attraction sizzled. The pace of the book was very good & I read it in under a day, which in itself shows how much I enjoyed it
This time travel romance had me speaking like a Scot and if I say "aye lass, or dinna or wee problem or meddling" just know that I have been influenced by Aedan and Abigail's back and forth teasing.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from NetGalley and was surprised by the element of time travel. What started off as meddling in the eyes of the Laird of MacLeod, turned to be something he could not live without and no matter the difference in centuries and civilization, he could not keep away from Abigail.
It was an interesting journey into an interesting time in history and that made it worth reading.
Time travel romance.
This is a good story z there is some humour in the differences between modern times and ancient Scotland, esp regarding the treatment of women.
