I absolutely love this book and all the rest in the series! I was recommended this series by a friend who also loves to read. The book instantly drew me in. I adore the main character and her closest friends. This is a quick, easy read...the perfect book for some summer reading.
YAAAASSSSS!!!!
I don't know how anyone could not like/love this book. It's a fantastic start to a pnr series. I read this book practically in one sitting! I can't believe how fast it went by. It was funny, surprisingly sexy and I didn't experience any lulls in this story at all.
Reyes!!!! <3 <3 <3 he's such the enigma. I'm so glad we met him the way we did in the first few chapters, bc I haven't read a pnr like this with this kind of male persona in a really long time. He is so protective. Swoon.
Charley is one hell of character I love to read about in a female lead. I honestly love the entire distinct cast of characters we're introduced to.
I was also glad that the crime investigations that were in this story weren't super complex and that we're actually engaging to read.
I'm so glad my co-worker introduced me to this series, even though it took me over 2+ years to actually make the time to read it. Maybe because I knew this series was almost towards the end and wanted to wait till almost all books were published. Yay, I'm so excited to see where this leads!
I love Charley. I love everything about her. And author Darynda Jones? Magical. She draws you in from the first page with Charley's amazing lifestyle and superb sarcasm and deadpan humor.
Charley is a private investigator with the ability to interact with ghosts. Even help them cross the bridge to the afterlife when needed. When she meets Reyes Farrow, she's intrigued with him as never before. But there's a catch - well I can't tell you what it is so as not to spoil the book. First Grave on the Right is the first book in an amazing series that I highly recommend.
Seriously you guys! I feel like an idiot. When someone says "I love Urban Fantasy," and your ask them what authors they've read in the genre, Daryna Jones is always mentioned, right?
Well I'd gone through all of the UF books by Ilona Andrews, Jeaniene Frost, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh .... BUT for some reason, I never picked up Darynda's books. I even have several on my shelves because I knew I'd eventually read them but I just never did. Well, thanks for a review request from the publisher, I finally decided to give the books a go and I am kicking myself for taking so freaking long.
First Grave on the Right is Fu*king Epic! I love Charley. She's funny and sassy and has just the right amount of bad ass. I love the sarcasm and witty humor. And Throwing Garrett and Reyes into the mix just made things even more fantastic. The flirting, the dreams, the everything! It was perfection. If you love Urban Fantasy, you HAVE TO READ this!
Great urban fantasy! I am not a fan of super steamy romances, so I appreciate the subtly there. I don't know why it took me so long to read it. I wish I had started this series sooner. I will definitely be grabbing up the rest of the series now.
I thought it was going to better than it was. It was fine but not quite what I wanted. I did a lot of skimming and it's not even a long book. It just didn't capture my attention. Charley was as sassy as they come, reminded me of Anita Blake! She's a female PI and I just got done with the Kinsey Millhone series! So I could relate her to a lot of other books I've read. I thought it was cool that she's a grim reaper, what a neat idea! So there's a lot of supernatural shenanigans going on and I liked the ghosts in her life! The "dreams" are kind of weird and unnecessary but it seems to be a popular plotline in this series. I like the connection she has with this "entity" but these nocturnal dream sequences are silly. I plan on at least getting through the second book before deciding if I will continue the series or not.
I love me some Charley Davidson! She is hilarious and her relationships in this book reel you in. I wasnt even 1/2 way through when I went and bought the next two in the series. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
(I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.)
Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.
Well, that was underwhelming. Judging from the blurb (which I know isn't always the best way to decide on a book), this sounded more like a mystery more than a paranormal romance one. It was just a horrible mash-up of all of the above.
The first thing to mention in this review is Charley herself. I don't even know where to begin...if she wasn't craving sex with an ethereal being (if that was what Reyes was, I am still not sure), she was wise-cracking in every sentence. It was just too much. For what could have been such a great character, she was more irritating than intriguing. And as for a "kick-ass heroine" that I have read in other reviews? I don't see how that is true cos she doesn't actually do anything. Most of the investigating work is done by others and she spends more of her time drooling over men than anything else...
As for the plot, well, 'what plot?' is about the best answer I have. A decent paranormal mystery started to show itself (about 1/3 of the way through the book) with missing kids, crime gangs, dead lawyers and stuff...and then, to my surprise (or maybe not), that plot seemed to get tossed in the bin and we just went after the sexy dream guy... *sigh*
And don't get me started on the romance. Starting with Charley telling us all about the orgasm she had with dream guy to the "love triangle" complication of Garrett Swopes (what a name!), there was never any real romance to speak of. This should be called "paranormal porn" and be done with it. There is no romancing being done. Hell, the guy of her dreams (see what I did there?) threatened to rape her on their first meeting - graphically. Not to mention he has his way with her in the office and other places just because he can. And that just about sums it up...
However, I have heard from a number of people that this series does get better so I will persist and see if the plots get tighter as the series develops.

Loved this book! It has it all; it's funny, silly and sexy. What more could you want.
Entertaining supernatural read. Charley is such a fun character as are the rest of the cast, living and not. Sometimes a little far fetched but we all need a little magic in our lives. Her wit and sarcasm make this book worth reading!

Charley Davidson has her hands full being a private investigator as well as the grim reaper.
Especially when the dead ask Charley for help before they will go into the light a.k.a. Charley herself.
Then there are the steamy dreams Charley has been having lately - are they merely dreams or something more?
Ever since I joined the bookish community I remember seeing people gushing about the Charley Davidson books. So when I finally started reading First Grave on the Right, I was rather excited. Now, however, I wish I hadn't read it.
Charley is supposedly funny and witty. I didn't think she was either. I don't recall laughing at anything she said, but I did roll my eyes several times.
My big problem with First Grave on the Right is the whole Reyes thing. Charley met him once and, on that occasion, Reyes threatened to rape her. Yes, rape. Yet Charley becomes obsessed with finding out more about him and tracking him down. This rang alarm bells for me. Huge Big Ben bells. Every time Charley thought about him I wanted to pull my hair out.
The plot was average and I wished that there was more actual grim reaper related story instead of Charley getting her ass kicked several times and swooning over Reyes.
I'm so disappointed that I didn't like this, but I just don't understand the appeal of a guy who threatened to rape you.
Overall this was a disappointing read that I did not enjoy.
I series is great. I have a daughter who is ADHD and this author has hit the main character just right. She bounce from one thought to the next and has fun comments.
I enjoyed this book. It has comedy, suspense, and romance. Keeps you reading til the end. Loved it so much I ordered the rest in the series just to know what happened next. Characters meshed together well and had depth to them. Could relate to the everyday human side of them. Loved it
Interesting story line. Very much enjoyed reading this book and kept hoping that Charley would meet the man in her dreams. Can't wait to read the next installment.
This is a fast-paced book about Charley Davidson who is a grim reaper. OK, before you stop reading, this is a good grim reaper as in someone who helps people cross over.
Her dad runs a bar and her uncle is on the police force. She is a private detective who lives with souls who aren’t ready to cross. But the strangest soul is one who visits her to keep her from harm and is in love with her. Oh boy, what a strange life mix.
Charley’s office manger is a great support system for Charley. Most folks don’t know what Charley is so she has to pretend to be on her phone when talking to the departed. The latest case is three lawyers who have been murder and worked for the same firm.
Between figuring out “who done it” and the soul that is in love with her, this book is non-stop action.
It didn't take long before I found myself immersed in the character of Charlotte Davidson, as the grim reaper. The story is riveting with the main character interaction of other characters especially in her past. I had a hard time putting the book down because my real life had to get involved. I hope the next book in the series is coming out soon.
This is the first book in the series featuring Charley Davidson, the no nonsense, coffee swilling grim reaper who does private investigator work on the side. The book has the supernatural side and the crime solving side and does include some pretty hot and heavy sex scenes. So, I entered this series at book 11, read book 12, and then went back to book 1. It was very interesting to go back to the beginning and meet Charley and Reyes for the first time after getting to know them so late in the series. The author 100% stayed true to Charley's character among the three books. So, if you pick up the first book and really find yourself wanting more of Charley, I highly recommend keeping with the series. Unfortunately, I still didn't see much growth in terms of Charley and Reyes' relationship. They have ridiculous sexual chemistry and that seemed to be about it. Maybe I missed something in the books between 1 and 11. Otherwise, still enjoyable reading for those looking for a fun paranormal series.
I have some friends who read this series and even though this is not my genre of choice I decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised. Charley Davidson is not what I would have expected from a "Grim Reaper". Not only is she tasked with convincing dead spirits to move into the light, but she often has to either solve a murder or get a message to a loved one before they will move on. Working with her uncle who is a police detective, she consults with the Albequerque police. She is a cross between Stephanie Plum from the Janet Evanovich series and Kinsey Milhone from Grafton. She is a private eye who actually solves cases with the help of dead spirits. The only great thing is that she heals really quickly which she definitely needs. In the introduction to this series, we meet Charley and her admin. assistant Cookie. Cookie believes everything Charley tells her and they have quite a fun relationship. There are a couple of male characters, a police officer and bounty hunter that a part of the ensemble who help her uncle solve crimes. There are several dead spirits that hang around her and do not want to leave and go into the light which adds to the humour in the story. I will check out the next one and see if I enjoy it as well. My only complaint is that there are a couple of rather odd sexual encounters with a ghostlike figure that are a bit descriptive, but otherwise a fun read.
