Many astute readers have mentioned that this account from a white man's perspective and recollection is questionable. I can tell you that I found the tone to be light. The charge of brutality and harsh racism isn't here. It is odd that I received a pdf of this book (I don't read pdf's on computer so didn't download it) and purchased a copy, but never had the desire to pick it up. Maybe, my unconscious knew, in advance, what my thoughts would be.
The book is perfectly palatable to its target audience. I am not the targeted audience. The art is good. I think the pages in black are meant to show tone (something bad is afoot). The introduction is probably my favorite part of the book.
