Love Chip's personality, honesty, ethics, and style. Enjoy his story...I did. Five stars!
Chip Gaines is as fearless and hilarious as on the show in his revelation about how he became the household name of the hit show, Fixer Upper. As a boy, Chip learned to go after what he wanted, encouraged by his parents, and he never let obstacles stand in his way. In college, focusing on studies was a challenge for the energetic young man, with baseball and business being the only things that focused his attentions. A few early mishaps taught him about managing business better, and trusting and loving others unconditionally earned his the respect and devotion of his workers and even neighborhood miscreants. When Joanna appeared in his life, and then their first child, Chip learned again the importance of wisdom tempering his adventures, but still being true to his audacious nature. Read about how Chip’s courage and relentless positivity led to him to success in life, and more importantly, the joy for which we all strive to obtain in Capital Gaines.
I love that Joanna mentioned in the foreword the reasoning for the picture on the cover, because at first, I was like "ugh, they couldn't have gotten a better picture?" Then, the reason was explained to me and I simply nodded and understood.
Other than that, if you like Chip Gaines, you're going to like his book. It is very much written in his humorous, optimistic voice.
One of the things I love about Chip and Joanna is how genuine they are in everything they do. This book was no exception. Chip's voice was completely evident throughout the entire book. A good read for any Fixer Upper fan.
This is a fun book to read about Chip and Joanna. Readers that like Fixer Upper week enjoy reading the background information about their life. Chip gives lots of encouragement to the readers. Recommended.
I love Chip and Joanna and was happy to see another book about them. I will miss them on their TV show but I think we are far from not seeing them at all. They are great business people and will keep on wowing us in the future. I always want more stories of their lives together, I would have loved to read more about that in this book. I did like reading about Chips younger years. They are just a fantastic couple and so likable!!
I could not put this book down! I read it in 1 sitting. Once I got started, I couldn't stop reading it. I felt like Chip was sitting in the same room with me, talking about his life and sharing so much of himself and his family. I'm already a fan of Fixer Upper and this book sealed the deal! As I read, I laughed, grimaced and shook my head at some of the things he shared. However, when I'd finally finished, I felt like I'd just finished visiting with an old friend. I also felt inspired to do some self evaluation and evaluate things I'd like to change in my life & business.
Definitely a book I'll recommend to others!
I think I’ve watched every episode of Fixer Upper, and I’ve certainly been inspired. Joanna and Chip Gaines are talented, loving, faith-led, and motivating. Joanna is the level-headed, calm and careful designer, and Chip is the physical laborer, giving new life to carpentry—and infusing everything he does with energy and humor.
In Capital Gaines, Chip has seasoned his writing with all of the above. His faith is evident, his love for Joanna is palpable, and he is real. Real—in the sense that he’s the guy next door, the class jokester, or the fun-loving brother that we undoubtedly can relate to.
I really enjoyed delving into Chip’s journey, and learning about the ‘smart things he’s learned doing stupid stuff.’ From his antics during his college years, to the recent decision to leave Fixer Upper when it’s a huge HGTV hit, Chip is unwavering in his decisions, due to his strong faith in God’s guidance.
This is truly an inspiring read, and I highly recommend it. I haven’t read The Magnolia Story yet, but it’s on my tbr (to be read) list. I can’t wait to learn more about Chip, Joanna, and their captivating journey.
5 Stars!

OK, I admit that I am a big fan of the Gaines’ HGTV television show and was curious about this book and how it would translate vis-à-vis what we see and hear on the show. There is no doubt that Chip Gaines is passionate about his life and his endeavors. His determination, belief in God and dedication to family comes through loud and strong. I understood all that before I turned a page in the book. While the book added some insight to his various enterprises it was more of an outline of his life to date.
The book tended to float all over the place and lacked in detail, but I think that is probably consistent with his personality. It came across more as an inspirational lecture and if that was the purpose he knocked it out of the park.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publisher for an advance copy.
Easy read, lighthearted with examples for Chip's lessons learned mixed in. Quick read, but didn't flow like I thought it would.
With a little bit of adventure, a little bit of humor and a lot of genuine down to earth life lessons. My word is "Scrappy". If you read the book, then you'll discover what I mean. Makes me wanna sit up and notice how much beauty there is in this world. This book is pretty fast moving and I was thru it in just 3 days. It held my attention because it grabbed my heart not just my head. It drew me into a new way of thinking that says, "When you fail, you actually win." You’ll want to grab a copy for yourself!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Who doesn't like Chip Carter Gaines from Fixer Upper? Seriously. This book was well written as well as funny and inspiring. Chip gives glimpses behind the scenes of his life before and during the show and pushes us to achieve any goals we want.
I seriously recommend this book for everyone.
This book feels like a personal letter written but Chip to you. He talks to the reader in such a way that you feel like he really has you best interest at heart even though he has never met you.
I read his other book that he wrote with his wife a few months ago and thought this might be the same stories but it really wasn't. It is a fresh take on Chip's life that is filled with determination and inspiration. The other book is more of a time line of events and how they got to be where they are now and this book encourages you to go out and be the best person you can be.
I loved that he cited his statistic and stories in the back of the book. You can tell that he wants to have as much transparency as possible. He just wants everyone to work together and make the world a better place. A place were we can all be happy and have fun together.
I would highly recommend this book even if you have never heard of Chip Gaines.
TV personality, Chip Gaines, treats us all to a very transparent look at his life of entrepreneurship. In this book, he shares many successes and failures he has in starting many businesses, growing relationships with those he works with, life as a husband, father and son. He is a shining example of a man of faith and hard work ethics.
His heavy emphasis of being an encourager to those he meets and works with, along with his beaming personality, allows him to be a “launching pad” for others. He emphasizes so many good traits for all of us.
I recommend this book, especially for anyone looking to start a business, to learn especially how to develop relationships with those you work with. I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson – W Publishing through Netgalley for my unbiased review.
If you have been a fan of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, then Shiplap and Chip and Joanna Gaines are probably household names by now. In their previous book, The Magnolia Story, the couple shared their story. Now in Chip’s book, Capital Gaines, Chip shares his story of smart things he learned doing stupid stuff.
From the show, you know that Chip has a sense of humor. That's one of the things I like about him. He is able to take a frustrating situation for Jo and turn it into a less stressful problem. I'm sure if you ask Jo, he can also cause problems for her.
As the title implies, Chip shares stories from his life and the lessons he has learned through them. Through his interesting way of telling stories, I was engaged in his crazy antics and took away some things from the lessons Chip has learned along his journey.
I found it interesting to learn about Jo and the way she more or less got stuck with Chip’s business for a period of time. I can imagine the stress that it put on her and the awkwardness of the situation with her family.
This book was a quick read and Chip's story was interesting. I never knew about the beginnings of his business or that he was an entrepreneur as much as, or actually more than, he is a contractor.
Chip is definitely a one of a kind person. He has had many experiences and learned a lot along the way. Did he do stupid stuff along the way, absolutely, but isn’t that the case with all of us?
I am a huge fan of the show Fixer Upper and that is the reason I decided to read this book. Chip is always so funny and entertaining on the show. This book lets you see a side of him that is more intelligent. I really really enjoyed reading this book.
I'm a big fan of Chip and Joanna Gaines and enjoyed their first book, "Magnolia Story." This latest was a nice addition and a fun, quick read. Other reviewers have likened it to a "dinner table conversation" and I agree; Chip's fun, down-to-earth style comes through clearly, and as a self-employed person I could easily relate to some of his experiences. His general upbeat attitude is very inspiring; constantly having to assess and adjust my own business can sometimes feel deflating, but now I feel encouraged by his shared anecdotes. Mistakes and cheese-moving are part of any business.
I did notice that this book seemed to presuppose a certain amount of familiarity about the show and Magnolia from the reader, and thought it could be fleshed out a bit more than it was to appeal to a wider audience. I look forward to thinking of how to participate in his "Building Bridges" thought experiment. Thank you, Netgalley, for the eBook. I am including a link to my Goodreads review.
From the show Fixer Upper, Chip Gaimes is always ready for a new challenge. He talks about his difficulties in school to his first entrepreneurial businesses. He was taught to never give up and what having a family means to him. Wonderful insights and information, great read!
I enjoyed reading Capital Gaines, & hearing the story from Chip's point of view. His stories of growing up, working, & the adventures he took were fun to read about & the story flowed well. I feel that anyone could read this story, as it is more like a conversation or his journal. Wishing the Gaines family well in their new ventures.
I have a feeling this is gonna be one of those books readers come back to again and again. Solid advice, perspective, and the charming honesty that we've all come to expect from the Gaineses. You did good, Chip!
