I've mostly skimmed this so far but I'm really looking forward to trying out some of the things in here. Seems a very comprehensive guide to decorating cakes for a complete newbie like me. There are lots of pictures showing the various techniques and finished products, these show up far better on my Fire than they would on my Paperwhite where I think a lot of the detail would be lost.
There are chapters dedicated to the different ways of decorating a cake. Butter cream, royal icing, fondant, chocolate, ribbons, flowers etc. I like making cakes and can make ones that taste pretty good but they look terrible so hoping a few of the tips in here will help. Not sure I'm quite up to making flowers and doilies and all those fancy sorts of thing yet, especially with a two year old “helping” me but if I can get one iced reasonably I'll be happy with that.
Lots of information on the different techniques, the different pieces of equipment I now want to rush out and buy so I can try some of the techniques in the book.
What a beautiful book on cake decorating! I can hardly wait to get a printed copy so I can read it more carefully and see the photographs better. It's lovely! It's also an excellent example of technical writing, and I love showing my technical writing students great text and graphics in a cookbook. Well done!
I think it is a good general reference to go to for information but if I had flipped through the book in the store I probably wouldn't have bought it based on the pictures. In my opinion, the cakes seemed a little out-dated and weren't all that attractive. For me, I look to the pictures and if they appeal to me then I look at the content.
All-in-One Guide to Cake Decorating thoroughly covers the basics of cake decorating. Learn how to make various types of icings, successfully use fondant, form flowers and leaves, mold and manipulate marzipan, pipe icing, and fill and layer round, square and rectangle cakes. Author Murfitt even includes instructions on making your own templates.
The instructions are easy to read and understand. They are written in steps, with helpful photographs. Reading this, I felt confident that I could safely do everything in the book, except possibly for piping. Piping has always been challenging to me...
A complete guide to decorating cakes. This is a great book for a home baker. Recommended.
I do enjoy making cakes, but the one thing that usually lets me down is the icing. I now have great hopes of achieving much better results having read this book. It is the first book about cake decorating that i have come across with so much information. Information that covers not only decorating cakes, but types of icing used, but the use of food colours, cutting, icing recipes and so on. There are plenty of pictures. I would certainly recommend.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers. This is my honest review.
I am a sucker for cake books! This one seems useful, lots of info on decorating cakes, how to use the paste food colors, various tips on creating neat looking cakes by cutting, melting chocolate, learned about crimpers-which I had never heard of before- gum paste was a new one for me, to.o. Recipes for frostings, icings, gum paste and others are included. I'm looking forward to seeing this book. Photos look good, but I the Kindle doesn't do it justice I'm sure.
Most cake decorating authors don't include enough photos to learn off of and the one's that are included are always the pretty conclusion of a step not the progress. In the past 6 years I have given up on cake decorating books in favour of videos. I can pause in the middle of a step and rewatch something as many times as needed.
Videos usually tackle one cake feature or design at a time which is great for decorators who have some experience. The people in those videos did not make a 3 tiered wedding cakes with iced roses and fondant ribbons their first day. They make it look easy. Viewers see the video of hour 1000, not hour 5. Even though videos can be convenient I prefer to learn via book.
Janice Murfitt introduces readers to cake decorating with a simple idea: learn the basics and build off of them. Murfitt sets the reader up for success with a step by step approach with simple language and numerous photos. A reader could work through this book like a text book or add to their decorating arsenal one chapter at a time.
A equipment list, recipes and templates are included in the Basic Recipes and Helpful Hints chapter. I particularly liked the decorating portion charts as I always have too much or too little icing or covering.
I recommend this to anyone who is interested in cake decorating.
Well organized and covered a variety of topics related to decorating.
A thorough and detailed look at how best to decorate cakes. The instructions are clear, and yet no matter how closely I might follow the directions, my cakes will always end up looking like lumpy potatoes and my fondant flowers like smushed car tires. Eh, well. Still: cake!
Good primer on cake decorating with step by step directions and many pictures. Not your average how to pipe butter cream roses and flowers book. Covered in this book are methods for covering your cake with fondant and marzipan, covering your boards, over piping, several ways to finish a cake, working with gum arabic, a few recipes and much more. Overall a good book for those interested in cake decorating and not just piping frosting.
