A nice way for fans of the film to re-experience the joy and holiday magic of Tim Burton's imaginative story. The art was overall well-done, and it's a quick, enjoyable read.
Wonderful take on Nightmare Before Christmas! Loved all the little details and illustrations to go with it. Quick and fun read. Would recommend to any Tim Burton fan and those who love Nightmare before Christmas!
With thanks to Tokyopop and Netgalley for allowing me to review this comic/manga,
This Manga is almost as good as the Tim Burton's classical cartoon. Artwork is just as good. Perfect for both Disney and Manga fans alike.
Another enjoyable Manga. This was a fun story, read it in one sitting. If you love The Nightmare Before Christmas you'll love this. Love the artwork.
Thank you, Tokyopop, Diamond Book Dist., and Netgalley.
A nice, little summary of the movie. I wish there could have been an expansion or side story, though. That would have made it even better.
Also, Jack's little blush on page 24 is absolutely adorable.
This book tells the story of Disney's Nightmare Before Christmas.
The art is very similar to the original movie's.
The story's skeleton is the same, however, it feels rushed.
Something that also let me down was Sally, her accomplishments felt smaller than they actually were.
Tim Burton is one of my favorite's. This manga did not disappoint. I will be looking to re-read it at the library.
This book was awesome! It's great for fans of Christmas & for fans of Manga. Readers will certainly enjoy this during the holiday season.
I love Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas so I couldn't resist this Disney Manga version which brought the film to life. It was really quick and easy to get through, my partner even found himself grabbing it for a read afterwards.
The Nightmare Before Christmas gets the manga treatment in this unexpectedly pleasurably book. This would make a great gift for adults of a certain age, or for a child of any age.
This Manga version of the familiar story is well illustrated in black and white by Jun Asuka. Some might lament that it’s not in colour but if any story is thematically suited to black and white it should be this one
'Disney Manga: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas' by Jun Asuka is a manga adaptation of the animated film. It mostly works.
Jack Skellington is the pumpkin king. He is bored with Halloween and wants to branch out to other holidays. He chooses Christmas, but can Christmas survive what Jack and his friends do to it?
The art is pretty good and the characters look like they do for the most part. The movie has lots of music and it's here where the adaptation tries and fails. I almost think it shouldn't have tried at all. For the rest of it, the dialogue has been translated from English, then back to English, and this creates a few odd phrases. For folks who love the film, like I do, this is probably a must collect, and it was fun to see Jack and company in this format.
I received a review copy of this manga from Tokyopop, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
I apologize, but I was unable to read this instant read while it was available due to family issues.
A had a little trouble accessing the temporary ARC of the Disney Manga: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas by Jun Asuka, sent to me by Tokyopop and Netgalley (in exchange for an honest review), but then, one day, voila, I figured it out, so I was able to get the complete experience of morphing a animated movie into an anime book.
I loved the Tim Burton's film A Nightmare Before Christmas and was pleased that the manga stayed true to the original. I could actually hear the songs in my head as I read the story of Jack Skellington's quest to find something he felt was missing, something even better than Halloween. Lost in his thoughts, Jack, the Pumpkin King, wanders into Christmas Town which houses the only holiday that could surpass Halloween in its celebratory flavor. Thinking to capture this essence Jack has Santa kidnapped and tries to transform the Christmas tradition, but everything backfires when Jack applies his Halloween knowhow to an already fine-tuned holiday, while back in Halloween Town avarice and greed threaten a possible turn around to the inevitable chaos. A parallel story has Patchwork Doll Sally, a devotee of Jack, trying to help him overcome his mounting difficulties, hoping he'll notice her in a more romantic way. She has problems of her own as she must finagle her way out of the clutches of her creator who wants her all to himself.
While the illustrations remain true to Tim Burton's representations, the black and white sketches, although detailed, don't have the depth of the original. Perhaps a hard copy would make it easier to see the illustrations. Even if this could be overlooked, the plot itself doesn't quite carry over, leaving some gaps in our understanding of events.
Still, after reading the 176 page graphic novel, I am ready to revisit the movie which is currently available on Netflix. I was never quite sure whether this was a Halloween or Christmas story, but I'll be watching it in time for Ground Hog's Day. Scary Christmas!
Three and a half stars.
I've never watched the movie but this manga was really enjoyable. There were some parts that I believe were songs but I couldn't really tell for sure as there was no indication so that was a little confusing but other than that I had no problem with it. The artwork was beautifully creepy and I loved the story. I might actually watch the movie now. 3.5 stars
I have not seen the film, but this seems to be a pretty accurate, if a little condensed, adaptation from the movie. I love the artwork (which is the reason "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is very high up my to watch-list). This is a fun story, even if you haven't seen the movie :)
It is definitely interesting to see Nightmare Before Christmas presented this way. While some parts of it felt a little stilted, it's definitely a fun read. I like the artwork quite a bit.
I requested this manga before halloween and it took me some time to get to it. Finally I did! I absolutely love the movie and thought it would be nice to take take experience with me while reading this manga.
I don't have any experience with manga to begin with, this being my first. I have read a couple of comics and wasn't always so enthusiastic about them. This manga stayed true to the story of the nightmare before Christmas, which made it relaxed to read through because I would know the path the story would take. This is something that is definitely not guaranteed when you read something that also exists in the form of a movie. I personally like it when a book is similar to the movie, since it makes the story literally come to life for me. On the other side, I would love it more if the movie was more similar to the book, instead of the other way around. It became a little boring because of that. I couldn't use my imagination that much.
Even though the story was clear to me, I can imagine someone who never saw the movie not understanding this manga. On the other side I don't imagine someone reading this when they haven't seen the movie. Also the songs in the movie are an important part of the movie. In this mange it wasn't represented that much, taking a big part of the fun away. I felt like I had to play the songs in my head myself.
The art was beautiful. I loved the fact that the drawings were very clear and distinctive to see. It wasn't unclear what I was looking at. The only improvement I would add is some colour to the art. With a bit of colour it would add some power to the story. I sometimes felt like the book wasn't finished yet, because it was so plain black and white.
Overall I enjoyed reading this manga. It was sometimes else than only watching the movie, seeing the story in book form.
I have a feeling I don't get this because I haven't seen the original movie...but truly I didn't get this adaptation. The flow of the story seemed incredibly forced and even jilted at times. I will probably still purchase this title for my library because of the popularity of the movie, but I don't know that I can suggest it for those with tight budgets.
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite animation films and I was excited to read this manga. However, I didn't truly realize that this would be completely the same.
What I liked about this manga:
I really liked the illustrations, but then, I always like Jack Skellington.
Things I disliked:
I don't think the story translated well into this format. When Jack asks "What's this?" my mind immediately starts singing the song. When you only get a couple of sentences, it felt like a disappointment to me.
The dialogues in this manga were mediocre, I don't have a problem with this in the movie, but in this format, dialogues become so much more important and I found them lacking at times.
If you haven't seen the movie, I believe that this would be a very confusing read. Nothing is explained that well, I at times had some trouble grasping what was happening and I have watched the movie several times.
All in all, I gave this manga 2 out of 5 stars. I am disappointed in this book.
