A must have for any 'Nightmare before Christmas' fan.
The manga is directly based on the movie, it's a fun different version of everyone's favorite Halloween story.
My edition was hard to read, half the pages were cut off, but I know the story so well I could fill it in. I will be buying a copy of this manga when it hits shelves.
I am not a big fan of the movie, never really saw the appeal. My boyfriend is a huge fanatic to the point of multiple massive tattoos and that is just the small stuff. So I thought I would give it a shot as a book. I much prefer books to movies after all. I still wasn't impressed. The book literally had a different font for when the characters were singing, but it was never addressed that they were. It felt like a lazy adaption. I wanted a manga, I got an adaption that rivals Adam & Steve for lame (the book literally referenced a famous drag queen coming on stage by her name and it was pretty awful). I just expected more from Tokyopop.
The art was consistent and well done. There was nothing technically wrong with the book, but it just wasn't exciting. It is hard to bring the fun of a musical to a written work. I did like that there was more Sally than I remember in the movie though. she is the only real character that made sense throughout the movie.
The book isn't bad and it is a great way to get a young reader into manga in a very safe and easy way. Give it a shot, but it didn't do anything for me.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a HUGE fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's probably one of my favorite movies, and I love the soundtrack. I was so excited last fall when I got to meet Jack and Sally at Disney. That being said, this wasn't amazing. My rating is biased based on my love for the source material (actual rating being a 3.5 star). This manga was a retelling of the movie, which I loved, except it wasn't as good as the movie. There was nothing really new about it, and the story was simplified (due to the different medium of storytelling, but in this case, I think it did a disservice to the original material). I would get excited when some of the dialogue would be the songs from the movie, only to be disappointed when it was always condensed and paraphrased into the actual dialogue (instead of song). Overall, this made me just want to rewatch the movie, and not worry about the manga.
I don't really recommend this unless you are a really big fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas and need something more related to it.
A brilliantly illustrated telling of the original story. Featuring all the characters and even some songs that were in the film.
3.75 stars
I'm a huge NMBC fan so of course I jumped at the opportunity to read this on NetGalley! Story was great (as to be expected; it's the same as the movie) and I loved the illustrations. My copy was a little disjointed but I suspect that's from it being an arc.
The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)
Personally, I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. The story was ok. Maybe I am just too old to enjoy these mangas. I would recommend to my nieces and nephews though
This manga is by far my least favorite Nightmare Before Christmas Project.
The manga adapts the movie mostly accurate with a touch of the Tokyo Pop cuteness. The cuteness does not override Tim Burton's original style but softens it slightly for the manga style. But the black white and white works against the atmosphere, especially when Jack arrives in Christmas town.
The dialogue takes mostly from the movie and the many of the songs are included. But what confuses me is how Jun Asuka decided when to quote directly from the movie and when not to. I was thrown off because the first page misquotes the beginning of the film and "This Is Halloween" is removed. Luckily, most of the other songs are included. There are a couple that are include in their entirety but most are just pieces with other dialogue injected. For me, most of the best lines from the songs have been left out.
The manga isn't bad but I'm a die hard fan and it just didn't do it for me.
It was just okay. We are big fans of Jack Skellington around this place, and this Manga didn't live up to our high standards.
As a long time fan of Nightmare Before Christmas & Tim Burton I feel like this manga version was beautifully done! It keeps in line with the original story and the animation is just right with no cheese.
Would highly recommend to any NBC or Tim Burton fans!
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas so naturally I loved this manga novel. Jun Asuka did a really good job with the manga illustrations that it didn't distract from the story at all for those that may be wondering if it strays too far from Burton's vision for the movie.
A Disney retelling in manga of the Nightmare Before Christmas. Not much new here, even the artwork doesn't really give me much of a new take on this story.
This was BEAUTIFUL. Thank you netgalley for the copy to read for an honest review. Now I need to go find and buy this as a physical copy because it is just stunning. And I am OBSESSED with Nightmare Before Christmas, so I was definitely excited for this. It was just beautiful artwork.
I liked the movie and so I had to read the manga. Great artwork
It's Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas! It's my very first manga experience! What's not to love?!
OK, so you know the story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, right? If you said "no" I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you and wait here patiently while you go watch the movie...

OK, so you know the story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, right? Great!!!
So you know that in Halloween Town, Jack the Pumpkin King is over it! After another successful Halloween Jack is disillusioned and wanders off, followed by his trusty ghost dog Zero. I love Zero! After finding a Christmas tree shaped door in a tree trunk Jack stumbles into Christmas Town where he discovers snow, colour and the wonders of Christmas. Jack decides he's going to be Sandy Claws this year and gets the freaky folks of Halloween Town involved in the preparations. Then things kind of fall apart. Can Sally, who's secretly in love with Jack, help to save the day? Will the kidnapped Santa Claus ever make it back to Christmas Town? Can Christmas be saved?
If you don't know the answers to these questions, then obviously you haven't been paying attention. I'll wait here patiently while you go watch the movie...

Right, so now we all know the story, let me say that this manga book is absolutely brilliant! If this is what manga is all about then I've been seriously missing out. This story stays true to the magic of the original and the artwork still feels like you're walking through Tim Burton's mind. With the cover illustration by Natsuki Minami and manga by Jun Asuka, I'm sold!
Kids and adults alike will appreciate this book. It's suitable for those who decorate their trees by November and still have them up in January and it's also a great read for those like me whose December catchphrase is 'Bah, humbug!'. Plus, there's Halloween Town! Need I say any more??
I received an ARC from NetGalley (thank you so much to NetGalley, TokyoPop and Diamond Book Distributors for the opportunity) in exchange for honest feedback.
I really love the movie, so I just had to read this manga.
And I brought back all the things I loved about the movie. For everyone who loved the movie just as much as I did, they should read this manga.
I am thinking about getting a physical copy, so I can display it on my shelfs and look at it as often as I want to.
Since the file is only 3 pages long and seems to be only the cover artwork, I will rate it accordingly. This was my daughters favorite movie. It was my favorite movie as well. I love the cover art and look forward to purchasing a physical copy in my daughters memory. I will also purchase another copy to donate to the local library since she spent an ENORMOUS amount of time in the anime/manga/graphic novel section.
Could not open file I tried several times with not luck. So I can not honestly review this book.
