Another fantastic book by KL Slater. I have read Ms Slaters four books back to back and whilst I thought they were all great this one was my favourite. This is a gripping psychological thriller and had me sucked right into it from the very first page, right up to the very last page. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers then this is a must read. Massive five stars from me.
*thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
4 stars.
This was very good! Its not your typical mystery book where you are left guessing who the murderer was, but instead we are told that up front right at the beginning (or are we....?). The story is split into two different time frames. One is the present and the other is set back 16 years ago. Its easy to follow and keep up with so that wasnt an issue for me. Sometimes some stories get really confusing when they do this, but not this book which I am thankful for. It holds my attention really well, is quite interesting, and it kept making me want to read 'just another page.' I fell in love with the little boy, Billy, and his relationship with his sister was sweet. It made sense that the main character, Rose, of the story has an Eating Disorder after all she had been through. For me, it made me connect to her on a deeper level, but, I was uneasy when I read the detailed description of how she made herself throw up. Its only short, but effective. For those suffering from an Eating Disorder, it can be quite triggering, so just a caution if this is you. (This story also deals with Suicide) Still, the characters were good, each played their own roles rather well and none of them made me feel that they were unnecessary to the story. That can happen alot in books, but again, not with this one. I was proud of Rose for how she turned out in the end, it was a huge step for her to have taken and if there was a sequel I would have loved to know how she had turned out, hopefully in a positive way. Having Rose be a librarian was my favoutire part! So all the talk about books just grabbed me and held on tight. Books books books!!! I couldnt get enough talk about it all, and all bibliophiles out there will love this addition to the story. (Nasty people trying to close it down, I mean, come on, its a library! How could anyone even have that thought!?!) I was left having finnished this book feeling so glad to have read it and had been introducted to this author. It was well written and throughly enjoyable. I cant wait to read more from her. Definitely recommend this.

‘The Mistake’ by K.L.Slater out now by Bookouture
I had not read any previous books by the author so I was keen to read ‘The Mistake’ and see if the reviews I had read before starting were correct......they were.....
A fast paced psychological thriller dealing with obsession and relationship control and how these turned a girls life into a living nightmare and murder of a family member and how that nightmare continued for the next 16 years into every aspect of her life .....until a discovery was made and a ‘mistake’ re the family murder was unearthed....the book then fooled me into thinking I had solved the mistake,twice...I hadn’t......
The book covers other wide ranging subjects such as Bulimia,The Miners Strike, and complex family relationships,to name a few,all are covered well and give an insight into areas of life you may not have thought much about before,I found it fascinating
The last chapter was a revelation and ultimately a fantastic ending that I guarantee most readers would not see coming
Very easy to read and enjoy,a book you are really like ‘yeah,am glad I read that’ and like a good meal you feel satisfied when finished it
Highly Recommended
The Mistake is yet again another excellent read from K L Slater.A superb psychological thriller centres around Rose whose brother Billy is found murdered sixteen years ago while out with Rose. The story goes back and forth from sixteen years ago to present day and is excellently told ,Rose also meets Gareth who unbeknown to her starts to slowly control every aspect of her life..In the present day Rose is still struggling to come to terms with Billy's death and when she makes a discovery in next door neighbours Ronnie's house Rose is thrown into turmoil. This is an excellent addition to Kim Slater's books who has penned yet another brilliant 5 star read with a great twist at the end !
Just finished this book. As usual from the author, it was another page turner. Great storyline that flowed along nicely and kept me guessing as to the perpetrator. At 70% I had it sussed. I didn’t of course. That’s what makes a good read. Well done again Ms Slater. 5 ⭐️ Find me as chrisjackmclean on twitter if u need any more details
K.L. Slater does not disappoint in this heartfelt story about a girl named Rose whose little brother goes missing while she is watching him. The book is full of twists and turns and the man Rose was dating at the time ends up being convicted for Billy’s murder. This man, Gareth, was a bully and jerk (to put it nicely), however, he had never admitted to the murder or kidnap of Billy despite being convicted of it.
This book was irritating at times, not because of the story, but because Rose was such a weak person. She fell under Gareth’s spell because he was an older man and enabled him to abuse her every which way. He ended up having a huge amount of control over her family so she felt trapped, however, did she not think to tell her parents about the abuse? They thought Gareth was a good ol’ boy who was helping them in times of need, not realizing he was abusing Rose.
Overall, this book was a fabulous read with suspenseful twists until the very end.
Thank you to Netgalley, K.L. Slater, and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank You netgalley and bookouture.. I loved this book. No surprise there because I love all KL Slater books! This is extremely fast paced and will keep you guessing!! Brilliant!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I was extremely excited to be approved for this book as, having discovered K.L Slater quite late in the game, I was devouring everything she's written. I loved the premise of the novel and couldn't wait to get started on this one. It was pushed straight to the top of my TBR pile. I am pleased to report that I was not disappointed!
This is probably one of my favourite thrillers of the year. I had NO idea where the answers lay. Literally every character in the book was a suspect as far as I could see and then big reveal....I did not see THAT coming. This story was an emotional rollercoaster, as we flit back and forth from past to present.
Rose's little brother, Billy, goes missing and then is later found dead. Sixteen years later, she still blames herself. The trauma she's endured in the past continue to haunt her and then one day she finds Billy's blanket in her neighbor's house. How did he get it and has the wrong man been serving time for a murder he didn't commit?
We got back and forth from Rose's present situation, dealing with the trauma and controlling her behavior and daily situations in a tight clutch, to her past, when she was just eighteen, naive and unsure of herself. Slater does a fantastic job of showing you the works of a sociopath and how he cleverly and carefully chooses his target. Like with Blink, Slater reels the reader in from page one, keeping the pace fast and the reader involved.
I do hate it when the cover states it's a psychological thriller with a killer twist. I go in expecting some crazy ass story that makes me head reel. I didn't get quite that with this book. Things are definitely twisty and you do question if you're right or not while reading it but I didn't get that big reveal with a punch I was expecting.
Slater is an author who I will always pick up. Her storytelling is wonderful and I really did feel for Rose and how one decision she makes as an awkward teen/adult (at 18) somersaults into ramifications she still has to deal with many years later.
16 years ago, Rose's brother went missing and then was found dead. The murderer was caught and sent to prison. For 16 years, Rose kept blaming herself for what happened that day, for every choice she made that lead to that aweful loss. After all this time, barely managing to survive, Rose found a crucial piece of evidence from that day, hidden in the house of her neighbor and good friend.
A discovery that made her relive her worst nightmare in search for the truth about what really happened to her brother.
The story kept going between the present life of Rose, and 16 years ago when she met the man who changed all their lives. I enjoyed this way of telling the story as it made it more dynamic and interesting.
And it was told by Rose (for the present time) and in third person when it related to the past. This was also a nice touch, i thought it made less confusion between the past and present and the evolution of the story.
The story itself was not really fast paced, at moments it even felt kind of monotonous, but not boring. I guess it was the right tone to really understand the life of Rose and everything that happened to her.
However, i felt that the end was kind of rushed, i thought there would have been something else to the story.
Overall, it was a good book and i enjoyed reading it.
This was a fast paced thriller which kept me interested throughout. The plot centres round the disappearance of Rose's younger brother, Billy. Sixteen years have passed and Rose is still searching for the truth behind the disappearance. A good strong plot with a twist at the end. My only negative is, I didn't quite connect with Rose. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads and Amazon.
The Mistake by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
16 years ago, Rose had it all. She was going to college and thoroughly enjoying her newfound freedom. She had a kid brother Billy whom she adored. She had a best friend Cassie to share her dreams. She loved her little town, and although they were having a bit of a rough time since the mine closed, she knew her parents loved her. There was even a new boy in her life, well I guess a man, as he was a bit older.
Then things started to fall apart. She lost it all. The final straw came when 8-year old Billy went missing while Rose and he were out flying his kite. All the heartache that came before could not even compare to the loss of Billy.
Rose had made one mistake. She trusted the wrong person.
Rose never fully recovered from the events of that year. 16 years later, she has internal scars that may never heal, and although she is no longer bulimic, she is always close to the edge. Her parents have passed away, and she is still living in the house. She is the Head Librarian for their little town, with no desire to leave. Truth be told, her fears may have something to do with her lifestyle. She likes routine, her small group of acquaintances, and her elderly neighbour Ronnie, who she keeps an eye on.
But Rose has never let go of Billy. She has never let go of the guilt she feels. When the past rears its head, Rose may not be able to hold on to her sanity. Has the wrong person been in jail for the last 16 years? She needs to know.
Told from Rose’s point of view in both the current time and 16 years ago, this story is about guilt, about the effects it can have on a person when they don’t let it go. It is also about control, and the effect that a controlling personality can have on another. How well do you really know someone?
This was a great, fast read. Really gripping. Can’t put down gripping. Although Rose was young and impressionable when the events took place, the author made you feel her naivety throughout the years. You wanted to hug her, but a lot of the time you wanted to slap her – in both her younger and current years.
Wonderful ending!
Great book, highly recommend it!
After reading Blink, I had high expectations for this book, unfortunately, they weren't met. The storyline was really good, but it just wasn't developed enough. The timeline seemed off throughout the back story. While it read like weeks had gone by, it was only 2 days. Slater does a good job with a narcissistic personality, but true colors were shown way too quickly. The blatant red herring angle didn't work and should have been left out. Not a bad read, but could have been so much better!
Thank you to Bookouture for the advanced ebook copy in exchange for my honest review.
I haven't been disappointed by a Bookouture thriller yet, and I loved K.L. Slater's BLINK from earlier this year. So when I read the synopsis for THE MISTAKE, I didn't hesitate to request it!
We start the book out with Billy's disappearance. Billy's older sister, Rose, is blaming herself for his disappearance and her guilt begins to consumer her when his body is found. Fast forward 16 years, and while Rose is helping her neighbor, Ronnie, she discovers Billy's blanket in his attic. How did it get there? Why was it there? Is the wrong man serving the jail time for Billy's murder? Does she really know who Ronnie is?
This had the elements of a psychological thriller - jumping timelines from Rose's perspective. We go back and forth from her past around when Billy was taken and then to present day. We're brought on a journey through her life and see how one decision can change the rest of your life. Slater does a fantastic job pulling the readers in right away. That's what I loved about BLINK, you instantly realize you won't but putting this book down any time soon. I know a lot of thrillers lately have been focused on the death of a child, and they can sometimes get graphic. This one focuses more on the disappearance than the details of his murder.
Overall, this is a page turner of a psychological thriller. It doesn't have the crazy "killer twist" that the book claims to have. So don't let that set your standards too high - I know Chandra and I both found that misleading. That doesn't mean the ending wasn't good! I will definitely continue to read more from Slater!
I give this a solid 4/5 stars!
Great read. Very well written. Good plot and well on its way to a top novel
This book was advertised as "unputdownable" and it certainly was! The suspense was building from the very beginning. As I read more, I just knew something awful was to come, but did not know when! Rose is a sad, depressed, broken woman. Her brother Billy was murdered at the age of 8, sixteen years earlier. The murderer was thought to be her ex-boyfriend, Gareth. Gareth was certainly a sociopath, had to be in control and mostly, Rose let him. I really do not want to say much more, I just want you to READ THIS BOOK! It is terrifying, chilling, thrilling and everything that makes a really good story! I am looking for more by this author.
Working in the library suited Rose. It was quiet. It was orderly. She knew what to expect. For the last sixteen years her life has been made up of checks and rituals as she struggles to get over her big mistake- falling for the the wrong man and not watching BIlly; her eight year old brother.
Even though the man is gone. Billy's killer is in prison she cannot move forward. her life consists of her job & helping our her elderly neighbour. When he has to go to hospital she decides to give his house a good spring clean. She discovers something of Billy's that leaves her wondering if the verdict on his killer was wrong & if she has even more to be worried about,
Switching between present day & sixteen years ago ,this book keeps the reader interested & on the edge of their seat. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Wow! An intense read that builds up from the first page and doesn't let you go until you read the end. It is a must for those who love psychological thrillers.
4.5 Stars for this fast paced psychological thriller! Rose is narrating back & forth between present day and 16 years ago, when she first met Garreth. A series of chilling things happen- including her younger brother being abducted and found dead. The story draws you in & totally creeps you out along the way! It's a quick read, the chapters are short & the twists are good! This is my first book by this author & I can't wait to read more! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
I have a confession to make. Although this is the fourth book released by K.L Slater, it is the first one of hers that I have actually read. Don’t hate me everybody. Of course I have the rest of her books on my ever expanding TBR pile, but I just don’t seem to have had the time to read them. However, going by how much I enjoyed this one, I just know that I will just love reading the rest. This is one book that certainly messed with my head but more about that later.
I don’t want to type too much about the storylines as such because I have a nasty but unintentional habit of giving away far too much information about books I have enjoyed. Sixteen years ago Rose was out playing kites with her brother Billy. Billy went missing and forty eight hours after his disappearance, Billy’s body was found. Rose blames herself for his disappearance and subsequent death. She punishes herself in more ways that one. Rose has never quite managed to get over the trauma of his loss but she has had the love and support of her next door neighbour Ronnie and his late wife. One day, Ronnie is rushed into hospital and Rose decides to clean Ronnie’s house for his arrival back home. However, Rose finds something shocking in one of the boxes cluttering up the house and this discovery turns her world upside down. Rose doesn’t know where to turn next and who to trust. Rose thought that she knew who had killed her brother and she thought that she could trust her next door neighbour. The only thing that Rose knows now is that she is in danger. Will Rose survive? Who really did murder Billy? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves as I am not going to tell you.
I have to say that I found the character Rose to be a funny old fish. There are distinct differences between the Rose of 16 years previously and the present day Rose. The past Rose was lacking in self confidence and she had a strained home life, due to her father being unable to secure work and due to the lack of money within the household. When Gareth Farnham took an interest in her, she couldn’t believe her luck and she was almost grateful to him for being so nice to her and for paying her so much attention. To keep Gareth’s attention, Rose felt that she had to play by his rules because failure to do just that would mean he could look elsewhere and find somebody else. To Rose, Gareth is so mature and sophisticated. Past Rose loved her friends but she started to neglect them as her relationship with Gareth intensified. Current day Rose does not have any friends as she finds it impossible to trust anybody. Current day Rose punishes herself by sinking back into the grip of her eating disorder, possibly because this is the one thing that she can control when the rest of her life is unravelling. One thing I couldn’t understand was why had Rose stayed in her home village when it was the cause of so much of her pain. I would have thought that she would have made a fresh start somewhere else to make new memories. It’s as if there is something tying her to her home village and she can’t break free. One character that I really did dislike- moreorless from the start was that of Gareth Farnham. To say that he gave me the heebie jeebies is an understatement. His behaviour set a little alarm bell off and halfway through the book I had a whole shop full of alarm bells ringing. I picked up certain of his behaviours and saw them for what they were. I don’t want to type too much about the specific behaviours as that might give too much away but to say he is a manipulative and controlling bully is being too polite.
In my opinion, ‘The Mistake’ is superbly written. The story is told from the point of view of Rose but in two different time spans- that of past Rose and that of present day Rose. I was literally gripped by the end of the first page of ‘The Mistake’ and reading it became an addiction to me as I just couldn’t put the book down. I had to read on and on because I needed to know what was happening next. The pages were turning that quickly that there were almost turning themselves and before I knew it I had finished the book, which I was pleased about because I knew how the story ended. Even now a while after I have finished reading ‘The Mistake’, I am still thinking about it. On more than one occasion, I literally found myself shouting at the pages of the book trying to open up Rose’s eyes to what was happening. There were times that I almost had to read through my fingers as I genuinely feared what was going to happen next. The author uses such powerful descriptions of the places and the different characters, that I actually imagined myself to be right there in the middle of the action. The author captures perfectly the devastation that was left and the despair that was felt in so many pit villages after the miners’ strike of 1984 and the closure of the pit. (I must admit that the history of coal mining is one of my interests as I come from a long line of miners- at least 6 generations thereof). After I had finished reading ‘The Mistake’ I really did feel as though I had been on a rollercoaster ride because there were lots of twists, turns and stomach churning moments. This is one book that I guarantee will stay with me for a long time to come.
In short, I absolutely LOVED this ever so slightly scary book and I would definitely recommend it to others. K.L.Slater is definitely an author to watch and I can’t wait to read what comes next from her brilliantly talented but slightly twisted mind. I award this book 5* out of 5*.
